Chapter 34 - Authorization

The underground hub hummed louder, lights flickering across rows of servers like a heartbeat speeding up.

Naomi stood in front of the console.

One prompt blinking on the screen.

AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED — VARIABLE ACCESS

Her name pulsed beneath it confirmingly:

NAOMI GLASS

Keene watched the ladder behind them, listening to faint footsteps echo above.

"We don't have long," he said quietly.

Echo stepped closer to Naomi, voice low.

"If you press authorize, it starts the burn sequence," she said. "No undo. The network collapses."

Naomi swallowed.

"And if I don't?"

Echo's eyes darkened.

"Vale takes control. Hollow's system keeps growing."

The servers let out a sharp whine — warning lights flashing red.

Naomi closed her eyes for a brief second.

She thought of the rowhouse… the cracked floorboards… the moment everything changed.

Then she pressed ENTER.

The room erupted in motion.

Screens flooded with cascading data, names disappearing, routes collapsing into blank space.

A loud tone rang out:

PURGE INITIATED.

Echo exhaled slowly. "It's working."

But the relief didn't last.

Another alert blinked onto the screen:

CONTINGENCY OVERRIDE DETECTED.

Echo's expression hardened.

"Vale," she whispered.

Above them, a metal door slammed open.

Vale descended the ladder slowly, boots echoing with controlled confidence.

Two men followed behind him, shadows stretching across the server room walls.

"I wondered which of you would be brave enough to push the button," Vale said calmly.

Keene stepped forward immediately, blocking Naomi.

"This ends here," he said.

Vale glanced at the screens, watching the blueprint unravel.

"Does it?" he asked quietly. "Or are you just clearing space for someone smarter?"

Echo stepped forward, voice sharp.

"You never understood the system," she said. "It only worked because people believed in Hollow."

Vale smiled faintly.

"No," he replied. "It worked because people were afraid of him."

His eyes moved to Naomi.

"And now they'll be afraid of you."

The servers flickered violently.

Half the screens went dark.

The other half flashed a new message:

PHASE FOUR INITIALIZING.

Echo froze.

"No…" she whispered. "That wasn't part of the burn."

Naomi's stomach dropped.

"What is Phase Four?" she asked.

Echo looked at her slowly.

"It's Hollow's last defense," she said. "If someone tried to destroy the system… it evolves instead."

Vale laughed under his breath.

"You see?" he said. "Hollow built something bigger than any of us."

Keene's hand hovered near his weapon.

"And you're still trying to sit in his throne," he said.

Vale's smile faded slightly.

"I don't need his throne," he replied. "I just need the future."

The lights dimmed again.

A video file opened automatically on the main screen.

Hollow appeared — older footage, standing alone in the server room months earlier.

His voice echoed through the underground space:

"If they burn Phase Three… Phase Four belongs to the variable."

Naomi's breath caught.

The screen flickered.

And a new access panel appeared — only one name highlighted.

NAOMI GLASS — PRIMARY CONTROL

Echo stared at the screen, stunned.

"He left it to you," she whispered.

Vale's calm finally cracked.

"That's impossible," he said.

Naomi looked at the blinking control panel.

For the first time, she understood the truth:

Hollow never planned to keep control forever.

He planned for someone else to take it.

And somehow… that someone was her.

Above them, snow continued to fall, covering the freight exchange in silence.

Below, the servers slowed — waiting for Naomi's next command.

Destroy.

Control.

Or walk away.

Keene's voice came low beside her.

"What do you want this to be?" he asked.

Naomi stared at the screen, heart pounding.

Not a pawn.

Not a ghost.

Not buried under anyone's blueprint.

Her hand hovered over the controls.

And the entire system waited for her answer.
