Chapter 25 - Running Lines

The side exit slammed behind them as Naomi and Keene burst into the cold air.

Snow whipped across the alley, turning every shadow into movement.

Keene grabbed Naomi's arm lightly, steering her toward his car parked half a block away.

"Move," he said quietly.

Behind them, the warehouse door banged open — heavy footsteps spilling into the street.

Vale's men.

Naomi didn't look back.

She didn't need to.

The sound of engines starting told her enough.

They slid into the car just as a black sedan turned onto the street.

Keene started the engine without hesitation, pulling into traffic fast but controlled.

Naomi's hands shook slightly as she clutched the envelope she'd taken from the crate.

"Hollow wasn't hiding money," she said, breath unsteady. "He was building files on people."

Keene glanced at her. "Leverage."

She nodded.

"Photos. Names. Places. Like he was mapping the city through people instead of streets."

The sedan stayed two cars behind them.

Too close to be coincidence.

Keene's eyes flicked to the mirror.

"We got company," he muttered.

Across the block, Calder stepped into the alley they'd just left, eyes scanning the tire tracks cutting through the snow.

Vale's men pushed past him without a word, climbing into vehicles.

Calder exhaled slowly.

"This is getting messy," he murmured.

He pulled out his phone, typing a single message:

She opened the first mark.

The reply came instantly.

Good.

Calder's jaw tightened.

Because whoever was on the other end wasn't worried about Naomi being hunted.

They were expecting it.

Inside the car, Naomi unfolded one of the photos from the envelope.

A man standing outside a courthouse.

Another near a freight yard.

A third face she didn't recognize at all.

"What are these?" she asked.

Keene's voice came low. "Targets. Or allies."

Naomi flipped the photo over.

Hollow's handwriting stared back at her:

"Pieces move when pressure rises."

Her stomach turned.

"He planned this," she whispered. "Even after the raid… he knew someone would come looking."

Keene didn't argue.

Because deep down, he knew it too.

The sedan behind them accelerated.

Keene turned sharply onto a side street, tires sliding slightly on the ice.

Naomi grabbed the dashboard.

"You always drive like this?" she asked.

"Only when people try to follow my witnesses," he replied calmly.

Another car appeared ahead, slowing just enough to block the lane.

Naomi's pulse spiked.

"That's not traffic," she said.

Keene's jaw tightened.

"No," he agreed.

He swerved left at the last second, cutting down a narrow street barely wide enough for one car.

The sedan overshot the turn, disappearing behind them.

Silence filled the car except for Naomi's breathing.

After a moment, Keene slowed, merging back into normal traffic like nothing had happened.

"They're testing," he said. "Seeing how far you'll run."

Naomi leaned back against the seat, eyes distant.

"They don't want me dead," she said quietly. "Not yet."

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She stared at it before opening the message.

Unknown:

First mark confirmed.

Her breath caught.

Naomi: You watching me too?

The reply came slower this time.

Not watching. Guiding.

Naomi's eyes narrowed.

Who are you? she typed.

Three dots blinked.

Then one word appeared:

"Echo."

Keene glanced at her. "What is it?"

Naomi hesitated… then handed him the phone.

"Someone calling themselves Echo," she said. "They knew about the locker. They knew about the warehouse."

Keene read the message, expression tightening.

"Echo," he muttered. "Never heard that name on Hollow's crew."

"Maybe they weren't part of it," Naomi replied quietly. "Maybe they were watching it too."

The idea hung heavy between them.

Another player.

Another layer.

Back at county jail, Hollow sat in the dim light, notebook open again.

He paused mid-sentence, eyes lifting slightly as if he could feel the city moving without seeing it.

"First mark," he whispered under his breath.

He circled a new word on the page:

Echo.

And for the first time since his arrest, his smile faded.

Naomi stared out the window as the city lights blurred past.

Every step she took felt less like escape… and more like walking deeper into something Hollow had built long before she understood it.

She folded the map again, slipping it into her coat.

"One mark left," she murmured.

Keene's eyes stayed on the road.

"Then we find it before Vale does," he said.

Snow fell heavier outside, swallowing the sound of distant engines — the hunt continuing quietly beneath the surface of the city.
