Chapter 3 - Chapter3 : The Roots of Ragnarok

Dawn came cold, the kind of cold that settled into bone before the sun had any real say in the matter.

Kael stepped out of the half-built shelter, his breath fogging in front of him. The plains stretched out silent in every direction — too silent, the way a held breath is silent right before something breaks it.

He trained first. Always first.

Swing. Step. Swing. Adjust grip.

[ Crafting Proficiency Increased ]

The system flickered faintly at the edge of his vision, and he let it. His movements were sharper than they'd been a week ago — cleaner, more economical, the wasted motion slowly being trained out of him one repetition at a time.

Angelika approached as he lowered his weapon, wiping sweat from her brow.

"Water is collected," she said.

Kael nodded. "Good. Today we expand food reserves."

Surplus meant security. Security meant growth. And growth was the only thing standing between Titanblood and becoming another burned-out clearing in the forest.

He turned toward the wooded slope beyond the settlement.

That was when he heard it.

A scream — high, panicked, and unmistakably not Angelika's.

He was moving before he'd finished deciding to.

The Plant That Should Not Exist

In a clearing ahead, four young women were pinned against a wall of fallen logs, trapped with nowhere left to retreat.

In front of them stood something that had no business existing.

A massive rooted plant, its bark split down the center into something that resembled a face — two hollow eye sockets, and below them a circular maw lined with fibrous, twitching tendrils. Vines coiled and writhed across the clearing floor like a nest of serpents that had learned patience.

One root shot forward and wrapped tight around a girl's ankle. She screamed as it hauled her off the ground.

The system flared to life.

[ Monster Identified: Ragnarok Sprout ]Level: 2 Status: Root-Bound Abilities: Root Extension | Ground Shock | Regeneration

Kael's jaw tightened. Level 2 — a full tier above him.

But it can't move, he thought. Good. That's something.

The sprout's grip tightened around the girl. There was no time left to plan.

He sprinted — not toward the creature's center, but toward the outer edge of its root network, and severed the vine holding the girl with a single clean strike. She dropped and scrambled backward into the trees.

The creature's hollow eyes turned toward him instead.

The ground trembled. Roots burst upward from the soil in every direction. Kael leapt back — but one caught him across the ribs, and pain exploded through his side hard enough to tear the weapon from his grip.

The sprout's maw yawned open. Energy pulsed up from the soil into its trunk.

Regeneration accelerating.

Kael forced himself upright through the pain. Think. It draws its strength from the ground.

He dove for his fallen blade. Another root lashed toward him — he caught it mid-swing instead of dodging, twisting his body to use its own momentum to pull himself closer to the trunk. He ignored the visible, flailing vines entirely and drove his blade straight into the main trunk instead.

Sap burst outward, dark and reeking. The creature shrieked, its roots thrashing wildly, the ground shaking hard enough to throw him off balance.

Kael hit the dirt, blood running warm down his side.

He could retreat. He should retreat.

But if it leveled up before he finished it, it would gain mobility — and a mobile Ragnarok Sprout meant lost territory, lost hunting grounds, lost everything he'd been building toward.

His eyes landed on the abandoned campfire the girls had fled from. A burning branch still smoldered at its edge.

Fire. Plants fear fire.

He grabbed it and charged, dodging two more lashing roots, then drove the flame straight into the creature's open maw.

The interior ignited instantly. The sprout convulsed, its whole body seizing.

Kael didn't waste the opening. He leapt forward and drove his blade straight down through the already-split trunk.

The Ragnarok Sprout tore apart, collapsed in on itself, and burned.

Silence rushed back into the clearing.

[ Monster Eliminated: Ragnarok Sprout ]Reward: +20 Points

Kael dropped to one knee, breathing ragged, blood still running warm along his ribs.

One of the girls approached carefully, her steps light despite the fear still written across her face.

"You… you saved us."

Kael studied them properly now that the adrenaline was fading. They were calm — too calm for ordinary villagers who'd just watched a monster nearly kill one of their own. Strong frames. Clear, steady eyes. A balance in their stance that spoke of training, not luck.

He activated Insider Ability.

Species: Abyssari Physiology: Enhanced Strength (x2 Human) Endurance: High Social Structure: Matriarchal Chief System

Interesting, he thought. Very interesting.

Elara

A woman stepped forward from among them — older than the rest, composed in a way that had nothing to do with age and everything to do with authority. Her gaze was steady and sharp, sizing him up the same way he'd been sizing up her.

"I am Elara," she said. "Chief of the Riverborn."

Kael blinked. Chief?

"We were ambushed by that creature while relocating," she continued, her eyes tracking over him — the wound at his ribs, the blade still in his hand, the calculation clearly visible behind his eyes even now. "You fight strategically. Not recklessly."

He didn't answer that directly. Instead: "How many are you?"

"Twelve."

Twelve.

The system's mission surfaced in his mind, unbidden.

Recruit 10 Villagers.

He studied her a moment longer. "You are not human." It wasn't a question.

Elara didn't deny it. "We are Abyssari. We do not hunt humans. But humans fear us regardless."

Angelika's earlier caution about outsiders made a great deal more sense now.

Kael ran the math quickly. Strong. Organized. Twelve members, already used to structure and leadership.

This wasn't charity. This was opportunity.

"You need territory," he said calmly.

"Yes."

"I need manpower."

Silence stretched between them, taut and considering.

Then Elara nodded once. "Then let us speak as leaders."

Titanblood Grows

By evening, the Abyssari had reached Kael's settlement, twelve figures moving through the plains grass with the same unhurried confidence Elara carried.

Angelika's expression tightened the moment she saw them. "They are not human."

"I know," Kael replied evenly.

Elara stepped forward, unbothered by the tension. "We seek cooperation. Not dominance."

Angelika didn't lower her guard. "Why should we trust you?"

Elara met her gaze without blinking. "Because if we wanted to take this land, we would not have asked."

The silence that followed was thick enough to touch.

Kael stepped between the two women before it could sharpen into something worse. "We build together," he said. "Or we weaken separately."

Angelika exhaled slowly. She didn't like it — that much was obvious in the set of her shoulders. But she understood it too.

Survival, in the end, was just math. And the numbers favored alliance.

Construction

Four hours of daylight remained, and Kael didn't intend to waste a minute of it.

"Shelter first," he ordered.

This time, he didn't try to do everything himself. He directed instead.

"You — support beams. You two — timber alignment. Angelika, coordinate structure placement."

The Abyssari's strength became obvious within minutes. Logs that had taken Kael's full effort to drag into place were lifted like they weighed nothing at all. With Crafting active, joints aligned cleanly and foundations settled without the wobble that had plagued his earlier attempts.

By sunset, four reinforced wooden houses stood at the base of the mountain. Not huts. Structures.

The system pulsed with quiet approval.

[ Village Population: 14 ][ Settlement Status: Recognized ][ Stability: 28% ]

Higher than before. Kael allowed himself one small breath of something close to satisfaction.

Fire Between Leaders

That night, the air inside the main house sat heavy with things unsaid.

Elara sat across from Angelika — both women strong, both sharp, both fully aware of exactly where they stood in the new order of things.

Elara spoke first. "In Abyssari custom, the one who saves the tribe earns leadership recognition."

Angelika's eyes narrowed. "And?"

"And I recognize Kael as primary chief."

It wasn't submission. Angelika understood that immediately — it was something colder and more deliberate. Political alignment.

She looked at Kael. "This will cause friction."

"I know."

Elara added, calm and matter-of-fact, "Strength attracts challenge."

Kael leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Then we prepare for it."

Silence settled over the room after that — not romantic, not soft. Strategic. Two powerful women, two cultures folding into one fragile settlement, all of it balanced on decisions still being made in real time.

Outside, the wind moved steadily across the plains.

And somewhere far beyond the firelight, Spirit Wolf scouts were already tracking the river downstream.

System Update

As Kael lay awake that night, staring at the reinforced beams of the ceiling above him, one final notification bloomed across his vision.

[ New Threat Detected: Spirit Wolf Movement ][ Estimated Contact: 3–5 Days ][ Preparation Time: Limited ]

Kael stared at it for a long moment.

Good, he thought. Let them come.

Titanblood would not burn like the last village had.

It would endure.

It would expand.

And one day — it would rule.
