"That's fine," I said, though my gaze lingered on the empty hall. "Grandma, you should take the petal now. Once you're finished, we'll head to the Pearl Tower to awaken yours and Sister Yun's magic."
Even I couldn't hide my anticipation. I was genuinely curious to see how the divine essence of the petal would manifest its power.
Grandma Zhang nodded, her expression resolute. She carefully lifted the ethereal petal from its box, its glow casting long shadows against the walls. The air in the room seemed to thicken as she brought it to her lips and consumed it. For a heartbeat, there was a vacuum of silence—and then, the world seemed to hold its breath.
Suddenly, Grandma Zhang was enveloped in a cocoon of searing crimson light.
The transformation was violent and beautiful. The deep lines etched by years of hardship smoothed over; the silver in her hair retreated like a ebbing tide, replaced by a rich, youthful black. Her hunched shoulders straightened as decades of physical toll were simply... erased.
Within minutes, the woman standing before me was unrecognizable. She didn't look like a grandmother; she looked like a woman in her late thirties, radiating a physical vitality that even seasoned battle-mages would envy.
"I feel..." Grandma Zhang whispered, clenching her fists. The knuckles didn't creak. "I feel like I could outrun a Servant-class wolf."
"Grandma Zhang, please—don't," I stammered, beads of sweat pricking my hairline at the thought of her actually trying it.
She let out a cackle that shook her new, sturdy frame, waving a hand dismissively. "Little Yuzi, do you take me for an idiot? I'm just talkin', that's all."
.....
The Oriental Pearl Tower loomed over the Perl City, a colossal needle of glass and magic that served as the heartbeat of China's arcane society. As our black SUV pulled into the VIP terminal, the sheer density of mana in the air was palpable. This wasn't just a landmark; it was a fortress.
Stepping out, the contrast between us was striking. Su Yun walked with the sharp, lethal poise of a high-level bodyguard, while "Grandma" Zhang—now a vibrant, commanding woman—carried an air of rediscovered authority.
"The Awakening Hall is in the upper spheres," Su Yun noted, her eyes scanning the crowd with professional precision. "Master Li Shen pre-booked two of the highest-grade 'Guided Awakening' chambers. He used his credentials as a Super-level mage, so we don't have to worry about the 'dull stone' errors common in public halls."
As we entered the lobby, the opulence was secondary to the security. Battle-mages in reinforced uniforms stood at every corner, their gazes hidden behind enchanted visors. I felt the rhythmic pulse of a Scanning Array wash over us like an invisible wave.
We reached the 10th floor, where the air grew thin and the stars felt close enough to touch. A refined clerk in silk robes bowed deeply as we approached.
"Master Li, the stones are prepared. For the lady," he gestured to Zhang Meiling, "we have the Earth Guiding Stone. For the Commander," he nodded to Su Yun, "the Blazing Ember Core as requested."
With a final bow, he retreated, leaving us in the silence of the high-altitude hall.
I turned to Grandma Zhang. "This is it. Focus on the void in your mind. Don't fight the element that calls to you."
She nodded, her eyes bright with a youth she hadn't felt in decades, and stepped into the first chamber. Su Yun followed into the adjacent room.
I stood in the observation lounge, activating Information Oversight. Through the reinforced glass, the two women were mere silhouettes against the blinding, primordial light of the awakening stones.
The first surge came from Su Yun's room. It wasn't a flicker; it was a violent, crackling roar. The temperature in the hallway spiked instantly, the air shimmering with heat haze.
[System Alert: Awakening Detected]
Target: Su Yun
Element: Fire (Third Element)
Status: Successfully awakened. Basic Level 1.
Note: Innate talent 'Mutated Fire Stars' detected.
A moment later, the door hissed open. Su Yun stepped out, a faint aura of heat radiating from her skin. She held out her palm; a tiny, flickering, yet incredibly stable flame danced there.
"Master Yuzi," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "It's… Basic Level, as expected. But the control—it feels as if I've been practicing this element for years. The stars are so dense, I can already feel them vibrating with potential."
"That is the power of your mutation," I said, a grin spreading across my face. "While you're at the Basic Level now, you won't suffer the 'stardust clogging' that slows down other mages. Your growth rate will be exponential."
Before she could respond, a low, heavy vibration shook the floorboards from the second chamber. It wasn't explosive like Su Yun's; it was weighty, like the shifting of a mountain.
The door opened, and Zhang Meiling stepped out. She looked grounded, her presence suddenly much harder to ignore. I focused my vision, the system interface flickering to life.
[Status: Zhang Meiling]
Primary Element: Earth (Basic Level 1)
Merged with
Secondary Element: Light (Basic Level 1)
Innate Talent: Unyielding Vitality (Passive: Mana recovery +50% via Red Vitality Petal influence).
"Two elements?" I muttered, stunned. "A Twin-Awakening..."
"I can feel the ground beneath the city," she said, her voice rich and steady. "It's loud, Yuzi. Like it's waiting for me to move it. And this other light... it feels like a constant hum in my veins."
"You both start at the Basic Level," I reminded them, my voice turning serious as I looked from Su Yun to the reborn Zhang Meiling. "But you aren't fighting just to survive anymore. You are fighting to ascend. With your talents, we aren't going to rely on standard cultivation. We're going to break the rules."
"Now, the clerk might already been getting anxious," I noted, gesturing toward the observation glass. "We've overstayed our booking window. Let's move."
We made our way through the lobby, moving with the practiced indifference of those who belong there. The air in the Pearl Tower was thick with the static of countless mages practicing, and the sheer volume of mana circulating through the building's containment arrays was staggering.
"Master," Su Yun murmured as we reached the VIP exit, "the Association's records on the Earth-Light dual-element awakening are notoriously sparse. If Meiling's dual-element nature is noted by the tower's sensors, it will trigger an inquiry. We need to register her as a single-element candidate for now."
"I've already handled the logs," I said, tapping the tablet I'd used to interface with the hall's terminal. "I synced her output signature to mask the Light element resonance. To the tower's sensors, she's just a standard Earth-element beginner."
Meiling looked at me, her eyes sharp. She understood the weight of that deception. "And if they find out?"
"Then they'll want to dissect your potential to see how you managed the duality," I replied bluntly. "In this city, being an anomaly is only an advantage if you're strong enough to protect the secret."
