Chapter 26 - Bonding pt 2

Mu Zhaoyun emerged from the shadows of the doorway, his steps measured and calm. He wasn't alone; a pair of household retainers followed, but the moment he saw the scene, he raised a hand to signal them to stand down.

"Is there a problem here?" he asked, his voice warm and easygoing.

The security guard immediately straightened, bowing low. "My apologies, Uncle Zhaoyun. These two... they tried to enter the grounds without an invitation."

Zhaoyun's gaze shifted to Mo Fan and Xiaohou. He didn't look annoyed; instead, a soft, indulgent smile touched his lips, as if he were watching a pair of energetic puppies. He then turned his attention to me, his expression softening further.

"Ah, Yuzi," he said, nodding in my direction with genuine kindness. "I see you've found some company. And it seems we have a few more guests than we anticipated."

He walked forward, looking at the lopsided, poorly wrapped gift in Ningxue's hands, then back at the two boys who were nervously shifting their weight.

"Mo Fan, is it?" Zhaoyun asked, his tone gentle and patient. "I've heard your name quite a bit. And you must be Xiaohou."

Mo Fan, feeling the shift in the atmosphere, straightened up, though his grin remained a bit sheepish. "Sorry for the trouble, Uncle Zhaoyun. We just wanted to make sure Ningxue had a real gift for her big day. It's not much, but it's from us."

A ripple of laughter escaped Ningxue, and even Zhaoyun chuckled—a light, genuinely amused sound.

"A heartfelt gift is worth more than the trinkets usually brought to these events," Zhaoyun said, waving a hand to dismiss the guard. "Since you've gone to such lengths to get here, it would be quite rude to turn you away now. Please, join the other guests. Just try not to cause too much of a stir."

He turned to me, his eyes crinkling with a friendly, mentor-like warmth. "Yuzi, since you're already here, why don't you look after them? You've always been the most level-headed of the group. I trust you to keep them from getting into any mischief."

"I'll make sure they behave, Uncle Zhaoyun," I said, offering a respectful, appreciative nod.

As he walked back toward the ballroom, he paused and glanced back at us. "Enjoy yourselves. This is a celebration, after all."

Ningxue leaned toward me, her eyes bright with relief. "He was so kind about it. I was worried he'd have them escorted out immediately."

"He's always had a soft spot for us, especially since he's been such a good friend to my brother," I replied, glancing at the boys, who were already eagerly eyeing the distant buffet table. "But let's get them inside before they decide the garden decorations are a challenge."

The ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the hushed, polite murmur of the city's elite. As we stepped through the double doors, the change in atmosphere was instant. The warmth of the garden vanished, replaced by the cool, polished air of high society.

Mo Fan and Xiaohou were instantly mesmerized. They'd spent their lives in the dusty streets of the city, and seeing the opulent display of the Mu Manor was like stepping into another world.

"Whoa," Mo Fan breathed, his eyes wide. "So this is how the 'other half' parties? Look at those snacks, Yuzi! I think those are gold-leafed appetizers."

"Keep your voice down," I whispered, steering them away from a group of stiff-necked elders who were glancing our way with visible confusion. "You're guests of honor now, act like it."

Ningxue stayed close to my side, her presence acting as a silent shield. When people noticed the heiress of the Mu family walking alongside a group of 'unconventional' youths, they hesitated to approach. She seemed to enjoy it, clinging to my arm with a playful, mischievous glint in her eyes.

"They're all staring," she murmured, a faint smile on her lips. "I think you've successfully baffled the entire guest list."

"Consider it my gift to you," I joked. "Diversionary tactics."

We made our way toward a quieter corner of the hall, but even there, the whispers followed us. Some of the younger Mu family disciples—those who had been vying for a moment of Ningxue's time all evening—were watching us with undisguised jealousy. It was clear that my presence, especially with Mo Fan and Xiaohou in tow, was disrupting the carefully curated image they wanted to project for Ningxue's debut.

"They look like they want to start a duel," Xiaohou noted, eyeing a group of teenagers near the punch bowl who were whispering aggressively.

"Let them talk," I said, my voice calm. I felt the steady hum of my own refined mana deep in my core. I knew exactly who I was and what I could do; compared to that, the posturing of these kids felt like a children's game.

Ningxue looked up at me, her expression softening into something sincere. "I don't care what they think. Honestly, this is the most fun I've had at a party in years."

For a moment, the room seemed to fade away. It was just us, the quiet rebellion of our group amidst the stiff, traditional ballroom. I had spent so long preparing for the catastrophe that was years away that I'd forgotten how important these small, human moments were.

The evening began to wind down as the clock crept toward midnight. The grand ballroom, once buzzing with the calculated maneuvers of Bo City's elite, felt significantly lighter. The Elders had eventually retreated to the inner chambers to discuss the "prodigy" of the hour, leaving the younger generation to reclaim the space.

Mo Fan and Xiaohou were blissfully lost in a mountain of desserts near the buffet, their earlier nervousness completely replaced by the sheer audacity of being well-fed. They were holding their own, laughing loudly enough to make a few stuffy aristocrats wince, which only made me smile.

Ningxue remained by my side, her cold aura barely a whisper now, replaced by a genuine, relaxed warmth.

"You know," she said, looking out at the dwindling crowd, "when father told me tonight was for 'celebrating,' I didn't think I'd actually enjoy it. But you made it feel like... home."

"I told you," I replied, gently setting my glass down. "You're more than just a title or an element. Never let them forget that."

As we made our way toward the exit, Uncle Zhaoyun caught up to us. He looked satisfied, his sharp eyes catching the sight of Mo Fan and Xiaohou waving a boisterous, slightly crumb-covered goodbye to the staff. He didn't look bothered at all; instead, he seemed to find the whole spectacle refreshing.

"A memorable evening," Zhaoyun said, his tone warm as he patted my shoulder. "You handled them well, Yuzi. It's good for Ningxue to have friends who aren't afraid of the Mu name. Keep looking out for one another."

"We will, Uncle," I promised.

We stepped out into the crisp, cool night air of the courtyard. The silence of the garden was a stark, welcome contrast to the hum of the ballroom. Mo Fan and Xiaohou stumbled out after us, looking exhausted but exhilarated.

"That," Mo Fan declared, pointing toward the lit windows of the manor, "was the best raid we've ever pulled off."

Ningxue laughed, a clear, ringing sound that echoed off the stone walls. She walked with us to the gates, pausing just before the streetlights caught her face. She looked at me, her expression uncharacteristically soft, and gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.

"Thank you, Yuzi," she whispered.

"See you at school, Ningxue," I said, offering a final wave.

As we walked back toward our district, the city was quiet. The shadows of the buildings felt different tonight—not just as obstacles, but as the pieces of a board I was slowly learning to master. I looked back one last time at the Mu Manor. The threat was still out there, lurking in the future, but for tonight, the balance was held. I was ready to face whatever came next.
