The boss didn't just grow; it uncoiled. The VERDANT HIVE-HEART tore itself from the cavern wall, a mountain of rotted bark and pulsing green veins that made the air itself feel heavy and thick. When it roared, the sound wasn't a voice—it was the screech of a thousand branches snapping at once.
HP: 50,000.
The number hung in the air like a death sentence.
"Remember," Riley said, his voice the only thing keeping the team from bolting. "Small hits. Constant pressure. Rezion, Kalyani—fire and ice are the only things that will stop its regeneration. We don't get a second chance at this."
The fight opened with a nightmare. Roots erupted from the floor in jagged spikes, forcing the team to scatter. Those who had drunk the Mirage Draught—Hayley, Hayes, Kalyani, and Rezion—moved like blurred ghosts, the massive wooden limbs whistling through the air inches from their skin.
"Front line, anchor it!" Hayes roared. Terror and Bramble charged in, stone skin clashing against rotted wood. Aria tried to help, shouting for Dot to use Web Bind, but the silk simply smoked and dissolved against the boss's acidic bark.
"Verdant element," Riley called out, firing a warning shot. "It resists poison and control. Dot, stay back!"
Dot clicked in frustrated fury, retreating to Aria's shoulder.
Then, Kalyani saw her opening. Her Fire Cat lunged, paws wreathed in flame. EMBER STRIKE. The moment the fire touched the Hive-Heart's leg, the bark scorched black, and a massive damage number popped up.
"It's weak to fire!" Aria yelled, her grin returning. "Kalyani, you're hired forever! No refunds!"
Rezion followed up instantly, his Ice Husky howling as it launched a CHILL RUSH. The frost hit the burning patch, the thermal shock crackling through the boss's armor and stalling its healing factor.
"Good! Keep that cycle going!" Riley shouted. He drew back Shimmerstring, waiting for Lumi to flash. When the pulse of light hit, the boss flinched, exposing a glowing hollow in its chest. Riley fired, his radiant arrow slamming into the cavity. The HP bar took its first real dent.
But the Hive-Heart wasn't a punching bag. It stomped its massive root-feet, and the floor turned into a carpet of thorns. Tiny red numbers began to stack under everyone's HP bars—bleed effects.
"Watch the dots!" Riley warned. "Sofia, we need a cleanse!"
Sofia didn't waste a second. Her rod blazed as Echo darted between the players, releasing waves of soft, healing light. Les planted his feet, creating a Vine Guard to redirect the thorns, while the Mossling rolled behind a rock like a panicked salad.
They settled into a brutal rhythm. Hayes and Hayley soaked the heavy blows, while Riley, Kalyani, and Rezion focused on the chest cavity. Fire, then ice. Arrow, then arrow.
HP: 40,000.
Then, the world went dark.
The UI vanished. The light died. For a heartbeat, there was only the sound of creaking wood. Then, glowing green circles crawled across the floor like ink.
"SPREAD!" Riley screamed. "DON'T LET THEM STACK!"
The circles detonated in a chain reaction of chip damage. Everyone was hit. The spirits shrieked in pain as the bleed stacks climbed higher. Sofia's mana bar was cratering; her hands shook as she pushed out another Healing Pulse.
The Hive-Heart reared back, the hollow in its chest pulsing with a blinding, sickly light.
ROOT CATACLYSM CHARGING.
"BEHIND US!" Hayes barked, planting his shield. "SHIELDS UP! NOW!"
The team scrambled, huddling behind the heavy armor of Hayes and Hayley. Luna pressed against Riley's chest, trembling, while Lumi's glow sharpened into a hard, protective spark.
The boss slammed its feet down.
The world erupted.
Vines the size of tree trunks whipped through the air with enough force to shatter stone. Hayes's shield disintegrated on the first hit. Terror, his stone-skinned cub, took the second blow. The rock shattered, and Terror vanished into motes of light.
"TERROR!" Hayes choked out.
Then the next vine slammed into Bramble. The little bear didn't move. He stood his ground to protect Hayley until the impact crushed him into the earth. He burst into green sparks and was gone.
"BRAMBLE!" Hayley's voice broke.
It didn't stop. Les leapt in front of Sofia, his quills snapping as he was pierced through. Moggy was taken out mid-jump while trying to save the Fire Cat. Fang, the Tiger Cub, was silenced in a blink. Finally, Echo—loyal to the end—threw herself in front of Sofia one last time before dissolving into stardust.
The shockwave faded. Silence fell, broken only by the sound of Hayley sobbing.
Half the spirits were gone.
"We just... we just lost them," Aria whispered, her jaw trembling.
Riley's chest ached. He looked at Sofia, who was staring at her empty hands, her lips moving soundlessly. He wanted to stop. He wanted to tell them it was okay. But the Hive-Heart was already shifting. Its bark split further, revealing more glowing veins as it entered its final, most dangerous state.
VERDANT HIVE-HEART — ENRAGED.
Riley forced his voice to stay steady, even as his heart felt like it was breaking. "They'll respawn at the medical center. They're not gone forever. But if we don't finish this, we don't get out at all."
Lumi floated to his cheek, his light hard and fierce. Riley set Luna down gently near Sofia. "Stay with her," he whispered. "Protect her."
Luna chirped, her silver eyes fixed on the monster.
Riley raised Shimmerstring, his eyes burning. "Rez, Kalyani—no holding back. Aria, Sofia—give me everything you have left. We make this thing pay for every spirit we lost."
The boss roared, spore bulbs dropping from the ceiling like falling stars. Riley drew back a radiant arrow, his eyes locked on the glowing heart of the beast.
Phase Two had begun.
