Chapter 52 - The Stars Fall, and Rise Again

The Verdant Guardian didn't just die; it unraveled.

The entire chamber shuddered as the boss shifted into its final, lethal form. The heavy, bark-clad armor fell away, revealing a silhouette that was all jagged edges and whipping vines. It had traded its defense for raw, terrifying speed.

Riley stood in the center of the wreckage, his boots planted in the dirt where, only moments ago, eight of their spirits had been wiped from existence. The air was still thick with the drifting, starlit motes of their fallen friends. Terror, Bramble, Echo—gone.

Sofia was on her knees, her hands hovering over the empty space where Les had stood. Beside her, Hayley clutched her own arms, the phantom weight of Bramble still lingering. The silence was heavier than the roar had been.

"Stay with me!" Riley's voice cracked through the grief, sharp and commanding. "They're at the Healing Center! It's not over until we walk out of here!"

He could see the shift in the boss. The Verdant Hive-Heart was now a glass cannon. Its bark was split, leaking glowing sap that hissed like steam, but its claws were long enough to disembowel a tank in a single swipe.

"Listen up!" Riley yelled. "It's faster now, but it's fragile. Hayes, hold that line! We end this here!"

The Guardian lunged, a blur of motion that left deep gouges in the stone. Rezion's Ice Husky met it first, unleashing a Frostbite Surge that crawled up the beast's spindly legs. Kalyani didn't hesitate—her Fire Cat pounced, flames spiraling over the frozen bark. The thermal shock was deafening; the wood groaned and shattered, exposing the pulsing core beneath.

"Now!" Riley roared.

Aria was a whirlwind of fury. "You took Dot!" she screamed, her gauntlets flaring with white-hot electricity as she drove a punch into the creature's flank. "I'm going to turn you into mulch!"

But the Guardian wasn't finished. It melted into the floor, vanishing beneath the carpet of vines.

"Nobody move!" Riley warned, his eyes darting across the room.

The ground erupted beneath Sofia.

Riley lunged, but he was too far. Hayes was out of position. It looked like the end—until a flash of silver light intercepted the strike.

Luna.

The tiny dragon threw herself in front of Sofia, her horn blazing with a desperate Faelight Barrier. The Guardian's claws slammed into the shimmering dome. For a heartbeat, it held. Then, with the sound of breaking glass, the barrier shattered.

Luna was tossed aside like a doll.

"LUNA!" Riley's scream echoed off the cavern walls.

The Guardian lunged again, determined to finish the job. Tom, the shadow cat, threw himself into the path of the blow to save Kalyani. He dissolved into light mid-air. Then, the third strike descended toward the struggling dragon.

Luna looked back at Riley. There was no fear in her silver eyes—only a quiet, stubborn bravery. Then, the strike landed.

The dragon exploded into radiant motes.

The world went quiet for Riley. The grief didn't come first—it was a cold, jagged rage. Shimmerstring began to burn with a light so bright it hurt to look at. Lumi, perched in his hood, flared like a dying star.

"Finish it," Riley hissed through gritted teeth.

The team moved like a single machine. There was no more hesitation, no more fear. Rezion and Kalyani unleashed a literal storm of fire and ice. Aria's Shockwire lashed around the Guardian's limbs, pinning it in place. Hayes charged, burying his shoulder into the creature's chest, while Sofia raised her staff, her eyes streaming with tears.

"For Luna!" she cried, a Light Lance piercing through the boss's heart.

Riley drew back his bow. Lumi flashed, and the Star Trace triggered three times in a row, a chain reaction of pure, radiant energy. Riley released the volley. Three arrows of starlight tore through the air, converging on the Guardian's core.

The explosion was blinding. The Guardian screeched one last time before bursting into a geyser of glowing leaves and emerald light.

The adrenaline vanished, leaving only the crushing weight of exhaustion. Everyone collapsed. Hayley sobbed into Hayes' shoulder. Rezion clutched his husky, trembling with the sheer relief of being alive.

Riley dropped to his knees, his hands shaking so violently he had to press them into the dirt. He looked at the spot where Luna had vanished.

"She'll come back," he whispered, his voice breaking. "We're going to get them all back."

Sofia crawled over and hugged him tightly. "We did it, Riley. We actually did it."

Through the haze of tears and fatigue, the rewards screen flickered to life. They had the loot. They had the first clear. They had the glory. But as they stood up to face the exit portal, none of that mattered as much as the shimmering lights of the Healing Center waiting on the other side.

Riley took a deep breath, Lumi curling into his neck for warmth.

"Let's go home," he said.

And somewhere, in the soft glow of the medical ward, a tiny dragon was waiting for him.
