Chapter 50 - The Verdant Core

The transition from the frantic hallway to the open cavern felt like a fever dream breaking. The air was finally clear, missing that sharp, metallic tang of the spore-mist that had been eating away at their health bars for the last twenty minutes.

In the center of the hollow, the mini-boss was nothing more than a fading memory of green sparks. Then, the chime hit—the sweet, crystalline sound of a job well done. A heavy wooden chest, carved with ornate leaf patterns, shimmered into existence.

"LOOT TIME!" Aria's voice echoed off the roots. "Baby dragon, get ready to eat rare treasure!"

Luna, still perched on Riley's shoulder, let out a confused but supportive chirp. She had no idea what a "chest" was, but she liked the way everyone was suddenly smiling.

Riley stepped up to the box. He didn't just see a reward; he saw the fuel they needed to reach the finish line. When his hand touched the lid, the interface flooded his vision with the spoils.

Aria moved like a blur, snatching up the Vineguard Bracers before anyone else could even blink. "Dibs! I called these in a past life!"

Hayes rolled his eyes. "You didn't call anything, Aria."

"I psychically did," she insisted, sliding the green-tinted armor over her forearms. "The universe intended these for me."

But Riley's attention was on the Verdant Essence Crystal. It was a pulsing, emerald gem that hummed with the raw power of the grove. This was the prize only the "First Clear" teams ever saw—the kind of item that changed the trajectory of a build.

"Riley… who gets it?" Sofia asked, her voice hushed.

Hayley looked down at Bramble, who was currently trying to chew on a glow-cap. "He'd be so good with it… but Les could use the power boost too."

The three kids stood back, looking more like fans than teammates. "You guys should keep it," Jonathan said quietly. "You're the ones who got us here."

Riley didn't even hesitate. He looked at the baby bear. "No. We're a team. And if we're going to survive the Warden, we need a tank that can't be broken." He held the crystal out to Hayley. "Give it to Bramble."

The moment the crystal touched the bear's fur, the room turned blindingly green. Vines spiraled around Bramble in a protective cocoon of light, and when the glow faded, the cub looked… different. His fur was laced with emerald moss, and his eyes held a new, ancient weight.

VERDANT AFFINITY ACQUIRED.

"My baby is a tree shredder!" Hayley squealed, hugging the glowing bear.

They took a moment to regroup, bandaging the last of the scratches and checking their gear. The passive damage was gone, but the real threat was just through the next archway. Riley pulled the last four Mirage Draughts from his pouch, handing them to Hayley, Hayes, Rezion, and Kalyani.

"Wait, why not me?" Jonathan asked, looking at his Tiger Cub.

"Because you're not dodging," Aria said, leaning in with a wicked grin. "It means you're meant to hit things until they stop moving."

The realization hit Jonathan, and he puffed out his chest, his Tiger Cub let out a low, gravelly snarl.

They reached the final tunnel. The walls pulsed with a slow, rhythmic green light, like the heart of the mountain was beating. Riley felt the old familiar knot in his stomach. He remembered the Stag-Warden. He remembered the way its antlers could split a party in half in five seconds.

The tunnel opened into a massive, circular arena. Thick vines carpeted the floor, and pools of glowing sap sat like emerald traps in the dark. In the center, a massive cocoon hung from the ceiling, pulsing with a terrifying, heavy thrum.

Then, it cracked.

The Verdant Stag-Warden dropped to the floor, its hooves shaking the earth. It was a tower of moss and muscle, its antlers dripping with glowing, poisonous sap. It let out a roar that felt like a forest groaning in a storm.

"It looks like it eats children," Jonathan whispered, his voice trembling.

"Good news," Aria cracked her knuckles. "We've got plenty of those to go around."

"Aria!" Sofia hissed.

Riley stepped forward, Shimmerstring beginning to glow. "Rezion—Ice Husky on the sap bursts. Kalyani—Fire Cat on the spores. Jonathan—Tiger focuses the tendons. We take it apart, piece by piece."

He looked at Aria. "Record it."

Aria's grin was sharp and hungry. "Recording… ON."

The Warden lowered its head, its antlers glowing with a toxic light. The fight for the first clear had officially begun.
