Chapter 13 - Second Evolution

After a couple of hours, Adrian finally arrived back at his home just as the sun was about to sink below the horizon. The forest around him had begun to darken, shadows stretching and stretching along the mossy floor. He crawled slowly into his cave, muscles stiff from the day's movement, and curled himself into a tight circle.

As he settled, only one thought occupied his mind: he needed to improve, to gain an edge. Survival in this forest was measured by who adapted first, who moved with foresight, and who could act decisively when danger presented itself. Adrian's recent experiences, the bird stealing his prey, the encounter with the hunters, the giant boar and that mysterious magic made it clear that the path ahead would not be forgiving.

Over the next two days, Adrian dedicated himself to careful hunting. Each movement was deliberate, each action precise. The prey was small, bugs, mice, and occasionally a larger rodent, but it was sufficient. He used these hunts not only to sustain himself but also to refine his awareness: the subtle vibrations in the ground, the faintest shift of air, the patterns of shadow and sunlight. By the time he returned to his home, he had accumulated fifty-two evolution points.

Settling down on the cave floor, Adrian activated the system and navigated to the evolution store. The interface shimmered into existence, a soft hum filling his mind as he observed the options before him. Almost instantly Adrian selected to evolve costing him fifty evolution points.

Adrian closed his eyes expecting that same pain from before to over come him but after a minute of waiting the pain never came. Slowly he opened his eyes to see that another screen had appeared before his eyes.

On the screen before him there were three different options.

[1: Giant Phantom Constrictor

A massive species, with nearly transparent skin, making it difficult to see from a distance. This species size grants it great power and durability, in return for lower speed. This species has no venom and instead relies solely on constriction to hunt its prey.]

[2: Verdant Death Viper

This species possesses deadly venom with necrotic properties, causing flesh and organic tissue bitten by this viper to decay quickly. Physically weaker than the average snake of its level, but exceptionally fast. Smaller in size, this species relies on precision and lethal strikes rather than endurance.]

[3: Lesser Arcane Viper

This species possesses limited physical abilities but has heightened intelligence relative to other snakes. It possesses the ability to awaken an innate magic element and comprehend basic spells. This path emphasized adaptability and mental acuity over brute force or speed.]

Adrian tilted his head, eyes narrowing as he considered the options. Each choice had appeal, each presented potential, but he knew instinctively that raw physical prowess alone would not carry him through the challenges ahead. In his old life, humans had dominated with intelligence and innovation. Perhaps the same logic applied here: knowledge and versatility could offer advantages greater than mere size or speed.

After several long minutes of deliberation, Adrian's mind settled. He selected the Lesser Arcane Viper.

Almost instantly, a searing pain shot through his body, sharper than anything he had felt before. His muscles convulsed involuntarily as the cave floor seemed to tilt beneath him. He gasped internally, resisting the urge to move, knowing that any struggle was futile. The agony was overwhelming, leaving him defenseless, unable to act.

Seconds stretched into minutes, or perhaps it was hours. Time became meaningless in the grip of the transformation. When the pain finally began to ebb, Adrian lay motionless, sweat matting his scales and body trembling lightly from exhaustion. Slowly, almost hesitantly, he opened his eyes as the sunlight pierced the entrance to his cave.

Stretching his newly transformed body, Adrian felt a subtle difference from before. The species description had claimed that the Lesser Arcane Viper was smaller than other serpents of its level, yet he could clearly feel that he had grown. His muscles were more compact, his spine slightly longer, and his movements flowed more smoothly than they had in his previous form. It wasn't a massive change in size, but enough to notice the improvement in flexibility and reach.

Curiosity stirred, and Adrian decided to examine the full extent of the changes he had undergone. He opened his status window with a mental command, the familiar interface appearing before his eyes.

[Status:

Name: Adrian Vale

[Evolution Store]

Scanning the status, Adrian took note of the subtle modifications. His venom toxicity had decreased slightly during the evolution, which was a minor disappointment. However, the addition of a completely new ability, Basic Dark Magic, immediately caught his attention. Alongside it, a new stat labeled MP had appeared. Adrian recognized it from his previous life and instinctively understood it as magic power, the energy required to cast spells and manipulate his new abilities.

He focused on the newly acquired skill, and as he did, the status window expanded automatically, detailing the effects.

[Ability: Basic Dark Magic

Effect: Allows for the use of basic dark attribute spells.

Current Spells:

[1. Conceal:

Effect: The user molds the shadows over themselves, making them hard to distinguish. Doesn't work in direct light.

Cost: 1MP/minute]

[2. Shadow Bind:

Effect: By touching the shadow of an enemy, the user can limit their movement.

Duration: Depends on the strength of the user compared to the strength of the enemy.

Cost: 3MP]

Adrian carefully read and reread the descriptions, analyzing their implications. The first spell, Conceal, would allow him to move through the forest unseen, blending seamlessly into the natural shadows of the undergrowth. It was perfect for ambushing prey or avoiding larger predators. The second spell, Shadow Bind, provided a form of control over adversaries, limiting their mobility and making capture far more efficient. Combined with his venom, Adrian recognized how these abilities could dramatically improve his hunting effectiveness.

A subtle thrill passed through him, not fear or pride, but a quiet satisfaction at the way the evolution had expanded his options. Whereas before he relied primarily on physical skills and instinct, he now possessed a toolset that could alter the battlefield itself. Every new ability added a layer of complexity to his survival, giving him choices he hadn't previously considered.

Adrian flexed his body again, testing his newfound responsiveness. Moving through the cave with a careful slither, he felt the fluidity in his spine and muscles, the natural alignment aiding his stealth. He flicked his tongue, tasting the air never truly letting his guard down.

Satisfied that he had thoroughly analyzed his changes, Adrian opened the evolution store to check for any changes.
