He studied them in silence.
The feathers were unlike anything he had encountered before. Normal feathers were soft, light, and fragile. These, however, were thin strips of metal shaped like feathers, their edges honed sharp enough to cut. He could still feel the faint sting along his gums from where a few had sliced him during the removal process.
Adrian considered simply leaving them.
Yet the idea did not sit well with him.
They were clearly valuable in some way. The bird's ability to defend itself had likely come from these very feathers. If incorporated properly, they could wound predators or prey alike. Materials with natural lethality were not common in the forest. Abandoning them felt wasteful.
No immediate use came to mind, but that did not mean there wasn't one.
After a moment of quiet contemplation, Adrian carefully selected seven of the thinnest feathers. He grasped them gently in his mouth, positioning them in a way that avoided the sharpened edges. The metallic taste was unpleasant, but manageable.
He looked at the rest of the pile.
There were still many left behind. However, he had no practical way to transport them. His body was not designed for carrying objects, and attempting to drag them through the undergrowth would be slow and dangerous. Every extra second spent exposed increased his risk.
Reluctantly, Adrian decided to settle for the seven.
It was enough for experimentation.
Turning away from the leftover feathers, he began the journey back toward his shelter. His movements were deliberate and careful, ensuring the feathers did not shift in his mouth. He avoided dense patches of brush and low-hanging branches that might jostle or dislodge them.

Upon reaching his cave, Adrian slipped inside and gently deposited the seven feathers in a small corner near the wall. The cave's interior was cool and shadowed, an ideal place to store materials away from weather and wandering scavengers.

They would remain there until he discovered a purpose for them.
With that task complete, Adrian did not linger. The day was not yet over, and he had no intention of wasting valuable hunting time.
He slid back out of his shelter and into the forest once more.
The remainder of the day passed in steady, calculated effort.
Adrian hunted methodically, focusing on efficiency rather than spectacle. Smaller prey proved easier to secure and less costly in terms of mana expenditure. A careless approach would have drained him quickly, and he didn't want to be left with no MP.
A couple rodents fell to his venom and constriction. A small burrowing mammal met the same fate after he ambushed it near its den. None were particularly challenging, but they required patience and timing.
During these hunts, Adrian deliberately minimized his spell usage.
His mana reserves were low, and the forest was never truly safe. While he had not yet encountered a predator capable of seriously threatening him, that did not mean one did not exist. Larger snakes, birds of prey, or unknown magical creatures could inhabit deeper regions.
If such a threat appeared while his MP was depleted, he would be left with only his physical abilities.
That was not a situation he wished to test.
By the time the sun began dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in streaks of orange and red, Adrian had accumulated an additional twelve evolution points. The steady gain brought his total to twenty-four.
Satisfied with the day's results, he returned to his cave as darkness settled across the forest.
Back within the safety of his shelter, Adrian coiled comfortably near the center of the cave. The familiar coolness of the stone beneath him was grounding.
He focused inward and opened his status window.

The combined usage had drained half his total reserves in a single engagement.
If the bird had not fallen quickly, or if another threat had appeared immediately afterward, he would have been at a severe disadvantage.
Mana was not a luxury.
It was a survival resource.
Adrian allowed the window to close and opened the Evolution Store instead.

His attention drifted to the size upgrades.
Increasing length and diameter was inexpensive. With only a few points, he could grow noticeably larger. A larger body would grant advantages: stronger constriction, access to bigger prey, greater physical intimidation.
Larger prey meant more evolution points per hunt.
However, size also came with drawbacks.
A bigger body would require more food. It might reduce his stealth. Moving unseen through dense undergrowth would become slightly more difficult.
Adrian considered these factors carefully.
He then turned his focus toward mana.
At present, with 10 max MP total, he could combine Shadow Bind and Dark Needle twice before running out entirely. That left no room for Conceal during combat or emergency use afterward.
If he were to increase his maximum MP to 15, however, the situation would improve significantly. With 15 MP, he could perform the Shadow Bind and Dark Needle combination three times instead of two. That additional sequence could mean the difference between securing a kill and allowing prey to escape.
More importantly, it provided flexibility.
Flexibility increased his survivability.
After only a few more seconds of consideration, Adrian reached a decision.
He allocated ten evolution points toward increasing his mana.
A subtle warmth blossomed in his chest the moment the transaction completed. The sensation was not painful, nor was it overwhelming. It felt like a quiet expansion, as though an invisible reservoir within him had deepened.
The warmth faded almost as quickly as it had appeared.

With that done, Adrian allowed the window to fade and settled deeper into his coil. The day had been productive. His evolution points had increased, his mana capacity had expanded, and he had acquired unusual materials that might prove useful in the future.
For now, that was sufficient.
