As Adrian moved through the night in search of a new home, he quickly realized that he felt far more sluggish than he did during the day. Each movement required a little more effort. His muscles responded more slowly, his coils lacking their usual snap and precision. The cool air clung to his scales, seeping inward and dulling the natural fluidity of his body.
He supposed that was to be expected. Snakes were cold-blooded, reliant on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. Without the warmth of the sun soaking into his scales, his body simply could not perform at its peak. The knowledge did little to ease the frustration of feeling weakened, but at least it provided an explanation.
Adrian pushed past the sluggishness and continued forward.
He moved carefully across the forest floor, weaving between tree roots and skirting around exposed patches of earth. The scent of blood from the fallen fox lingered faintly in the air behind him, carried by the shifting breeze. He did not look back. The corpse would not remain undisturbed for long. By morning, scavengers would already be tearing into it.
He needed distance.
The forest at night felt different from the day. Though darkness concealed much from ordinary sight, Adrian's infrared vision painted the world in shifting shades of warmth. Small rodents glowed faintly beneath the underbrush. Insects pulsed like tiny embers. The trunks of trees held the memory of the sun's heat, fading slowly as the hours passed.
Still, the cold pressed in.
It took two long hours of steady movement before Adrian finally located a place suitable enough to serve as a new shelter.
It was not perfect, but it was serviceable.
A pile of jagged rocks had collapsed against the base of a small slope, forming a narrow, angled crevice partially hidden by tangled roots and fallen leaves. The entrance was tight, tight enough that larger predators would struggle to force their way inside. That alone made it valuable.
He circled the area first, scanning carefully.
No large heat signatures lingered nearby. No fresh predator scent overwhelmed the air. The location was slightly closer to the human settlement than his previous shelter had been, but it would still require a considerable journey to reach it. The distance was enough to avoid casual encounters.
Satisfied, Adrian slipped inside.
The interior was slightly smaller than his previous home. The space allowed him to stretch out comfortably,. The ceiling pressed lower, and the rock walls were rougher. Still, it was dry. It was hidden. And most importantly, it was safe.
Adrian settled in but did not allow himself to fall fully asleep. Instead, he remained coiled loosely, resting while keeping his senses alert. Every scrape of a branch, every rustle of leaves, every distant cry in the forest registered in his awareness. This territory was unfamiliar. Until he understood it better, vigilance was necessary.
The night passed without incident.
When dawn arrived, warmth gradually returned to the forest. Adrian emerged from his shelter once the sun had risen enough to heat the ground. He lingered briefly in a patch of exposed earth, allowing the sunlight to seep into his scales. The difference was immediate. His muscles loosened. His movements regained their smooth precision.
Strength returned with warmth.
Once sufficiently heated, Adrian began scouting the surrounding area more thoroughly.
He moved methodically, mapping the terrain in his mind. He located several rodent burrows tucked beneath tree roots and other foliage. The faint heat signatures within confirmed they were occupied. Additionally he found two small bird nests hidden among low branches, easy targets if approached correctly.
Further exploration brought him toward a rocky incline that rose into a short cliff face. There, on a narrow ledge near the top, sat a far larger nest.
Adrian paused at the base of the cliff and tilted his head upward.
Through infrared vision, he could detect multiple warm shapes clustered together. Young birds. Their heat signatures were bright and active. High-pitched squeals drifted down from above, thin and shrill.
He remained still for several seconds, assessing.
A nest that size would not belong to a small bird. The parent was likely formidable. Hunting the chicks might yield a large reward, but the risk was equally significant. He had only just relocated. Drawing the attention of a powerful avian predator so soon would be reckless.
Adrian turned away.
He would remember the location. Watch it. Learn its patterns. But he would not act hastily.
By midday, Adrian began hunting in earnest. The rodents proved manageable. Their burrows offered little protection once he located the entrances, and his venom ensured swift kills. The smaller bird nests required patience, but he succeeded in ambushing one distracted fledgling.
By the time the sun began to dip toward the horizon, Adrian had accumulated another thirteen evolution points.
Fed and warmed, he returned to his shelter.
Inside the rocky crevice, Adrian coiled himself and allowed his thoughts to drift back to the previous night's battle.
The fox.
The memory was sharp.
He had survived, yes. He had even gained a substantial number of evolution points. But the victory had been narrow, dependent on terrain, preparation, and repeated spellcasting.
If the fox's claws had connected even once…
Adrian understood the truth clearly.
He lacked physical strength. He lacked durability. His body, though capable of delivering venom and constriction, could not withstand direct confrontation with larger predators.
That needed to change.
The evolution points he had gathered represented potential. Growth. Adaptation.
Without further hesitation, Adrian directed twenty-five evolution points into length and two into diameter.
The transformation began instantly.
A searing pain tore through his body.
It felt as though every muscle fiber was being stretched beyond its limit. His spine burned as if molten metal had been poured through it. Scales shifted, separating and reforming. His internal organs seemed to compress and expand simultaneously, struggling to accommodate the sudden surge of growth.
Adrian writhed instinctively, though the confined space of the shelter limited his movement. The rock walls scraped against him as his body elongated. The sensation was not merely surface pain, it was deep, structural, as if his entire framework was being dismantled and rebuilt.
The agony lasted several long minutes.
Time blurred under the intensity of it.
Gradually, the pain began to recede. The burning dulled to a throb. The stretching eased. His breathing slowed.
When it finally stopped, Adrian lay still for several seconds, allowing his senses to recalibrate.
Something felt different.
He extended himself cautiously, uncoiling part of his body.
The movement alone confirmed it.
He was longer. Substantially so.
Where once he had been modest in size, now his body stretched with new weight and presence. His coils pressed more firmly against the ground. The rock walls that had once felt comfortably spaced now seemed closer, though still sufficient.
He had more mass.
More reach.
More substance.
Adrian opened his status.

One meter in length. Eight centimeters in diameter.
He studied the numbers briefly before dismissing them.
Feeling his new size, Adrian could sense the increased weight of his coils and the enhanced tension in his muscles. When he tightened his body experimentally, the pressure he could exert was noticeably greater. His constriction would be far deadlier now. His strikes would carry more force.
The memory of the fox surfaced again.
If such a predator forced its way into his shelter now, the outcome would not be so one-sided.
He was still not invincible. Still not dominant. But he was no longer as fragile as before.
Looking at his leftover points, Adrian decided to save them. Adaptation should be deliberate, not impulsive. The forest would present new challenges soon enough.
With that resolved, Adrian shifted into a comfortable coil in the corner of his shelter. Despite his increased size, the space remained sufficient. The rock walls enclosed him securely, the narrow entrance offering protection from larger threats.
Outside, the light began to fade.
Adrian allowed himself to rest, senses partially alert, waiting for the night to pass and for whatever the forest might bring next.
