Chapter 22 - chapter 22

The tunnel grew colder the deeper they walked.

Water dripped from the ceiling in slow rhythm. Old stone walls curved inward, carved partly by tools, partly by time. Faint metal lines ran along the sides, half buried in rock.

Theo's eyes lit up despite the tension. "Ancient conduit channels. This place was part of a signal network."

Renn glanced around. "Signal for what? Bad news?"

Lucan's voice was low. "Old capital communication lines. Before the Spire expanded."

Kai ran his fingers lightly along the wall.

For a second, he felt something faint.

Like a pulse behind the stone.

He did not mention it.

They reached a wide circular chamber. Broken pillars. Rusted framework. A cracked platform in the center shaped like a ring.

"This is it," Lucan said quietly. "Relay Station Seven."

"Seven?" Aria asked.

"There were more?" Renn added.

Lucan nodded. "Most are sealed. Some forgotten."

Mira stepped cautiously onto the stone floor. "It feels strange."

Kai agreed.

The shard in his pocket felt heavier again.

Not unstable.

Just aware.

Theo crouched near the metal lines and brushed away dust. "Energy traces are still present. Weak, but not dead."

Renn leaned against a pillar. "Please tell me we are not turning this place back on."

Before anyone could answer, a soft click echoed from the tunnel behind them.

Everyone froze.

Lucan's hunters turned instantly.

Footsteps.

Measured.

Slow.

Not mercenaries this time.

Too calm.

From the darkness stepped three figures wearing long gray coats with silver thread along the edges.

Not academy uniform.

Not mercenary armor.

No visible insignia.

The one in the center removed his gloves slowly.

His hair was silver despite his young face.

Lucan's expression changed immediately.

"Inspection Bureau," he muttered under his breath.

The silver haired man smiled faintly. "Captain Lucan. We did not expect to see you here."

His voice was smooth. Too smooth.

Renn whispered, "And who are these now?"

Theo answered quietly, "Central oversight."

The man's eyes shifted to Kai.

"And you must be the boy causing so much noise."

Kai did not step back.

"We were attacked," he said evenly.

The man tilted his head. "Yes. We are aware."

Mira's fingers tightened around Kai's sleeve.

Lucan stepped forward. "This is an internal operation."

The silver haired man's smile did not change. "Everything is internal when it concerns resonance."

That word again.

The other two gray coated figures moved casually to block the tunnel exit.

Not aggressive.

Just positioning.

Aria's hawk circled once above the chamber and returned to her shoulder.

Kai's thoughts moved carefully.

These were not field hunters.

They carried no visible beasts.

Yet the air around them felt heavier.

The silver haired man walked slowly toward the center platform.

"Relay Station Seven," he said almost fondly. "Do you know what it was originally built for?"

Theo answered before he could stop himself. "Long distance energy transmission."

The man smiled wider. "Partly."

He looked at Kai.

"It was also built to measure harmonics."

Lucan stiffened.

Renn looked confused. "Harmonics again?"

The man turned toward Kai fully now.

"You have been resonating with Riftborn entities."

Kai stayed silent.

The man continued, "You stabilized one tonight."

Lucan frowned. "You have no direct confirmation."

The silver haired man glanced at him calmly. "We have confirmation of everything."

That was not comforting.

Mira stepped forward suddenly. "You are the ones who sealed us."

The man's gaze flickered briefly toward her.

"Containment is necessary when instability risks the world."

"Or when control is convenient," she shot back.

A faint crack echoed through the chamber.

Everyone looked toward the central ring platform.

The metal lines along the walls were glowing faint blue.

Theo's eyes widened. "It is activating."

"No one touched it," Renn said.

Kai felt it then.

The shard.

It was reacting to the station.

The silver haired man's expression sharpened slightly.

"So it responds to proximity."

Lucan looked at him sharply. "You knew this could happen."

The man did not deny it.

"That is why we allowed the path to remain open."

Allowed.

Kai's stomach tightened.

"The mercenaries," he said slowly.

The man gave him a mild look. "Independent contractors are useful for observing natural reactions."

Renn swore. "You used them as bait."

The glow on the platform intensified.

Lines of light spread outward like cracks across the stone floor.

Theo backed up. "Energy output increasing."

Mira's voice trembled. "It feels like before."

Kai stepped toward the platform without thinking.

The shard pulsed stronger.

The silver haired man watched closely.

"Do not interfere," he told his companions quietly.

Lucan turned to him sharply. "You planned this."

"We planned observation," the man corrected. "Whether he survives it is his own capacity."

That was the moment Aria moved slightly closer to Kai.

Renn's bear stepped in front of him protectively.

The central ring lit fully now, forming a faint circular barrier of light.

A low hum filled the chamber.

Kai felt something pulling gently at his chest.

Not forceful.

Inviting.

He reached into his pocket and took out the shard.

The moment it was exposed, the platform flared bright.

Symbols appeared across the ring.

Not letters.

Not runes.

Patterns.

Theo whispered, "Frequency alignment."

The silver haired man's calm mask slipped for a second.

"It is earlier than projections," he murmured.

The light intensified.

Then the air inside the ring distorted.

Not forming a Riftborn this time.

Forming… a doorway.

A thin vertical slit of shimmering distortion.

Renn's voice was tight. "Tell me that is not a portal."

Mira's eyes were wide. "It feels like the one in the vault."

Lucan's hand went to his weapon. "Shut it down."

"How?" Theo snapped.

The silver haired man stepped forward finally.

"Step inside," he said to Kai.

Everyone turned to him.

"Are you insane?" Renn demanded.

The man's eyes never left Kai. "The station responds only to him. If he does not engage, the alignment will collapse violently."

Kai felt the hum grow unstable.

Aria grabbed his arm. "You do not know what is on the other side."

He knew that.

He remembered the broken towers.

The dark sky.

The glimpse inside the Riftborn.

Lucan spoke quietly but firmly. "If this is a test, it was unauthorized."

The man did not answer.

The portal flickered violently.

Cracks began forming along the platform edge.

Theo shouted, "If it collapses, this chamber will implode!"

Kai took one slow breath.

Then he looked at Mira.

"You felt this before?"

She nodded shakily. "But never this strong."

Renn stepped in front of him. "You are not walking into some glowing crack alone."

Kai gave him a small look. "You always said I overthink."

"That was before portals," Renn replied.

The distortion grew wider.

Inside it, shapes flickered.

Faint silhouettes.

Like structures.

Or ruins.

The silver haired man's voice turned colder. "Decide quickly."

The hum reached a high pitch.

Kai felt the shard vibrate sharply in his palm.

Not chaotic.

Calling.

Behind him, his friends stood ready.

In front of him, a doorway to something unknown.

The cracks in the chamber walls deepened.

Dust fell from above.

Lucan shouted, "Now!"

Kai stepped forward.

But at the last second, Bouncy jumped from his shoulder and bounced straight into the portal first.

The distortion flared bright white.

Then everything went silent.

For one heartbeat, the portal stabilized perfectly.

Clear.

On the other side, a broken city skyline under a dark sky.

And standing in that skyline, watching directly through the opening…

Was another version of Kai.
