The forest was completely dark.
No suppressor hum.
No vehicle lights.
No visor glow.
Only the shard in Kai's hand gave off a faint silver shine.
And the man standing on top of the armored vehicle.
He stepped forward slightly, boots scraping metal.
Tall. Calm. Hands behind his back.
Renn squinted. "Why does everyone dramatic stand on things?"
No one laughed.
Lucan's blade stayed raised. "Identify yourself."
The man tilted his head.
"You may call me Director Vale."
His voice carried easily across the clearing without amplification.
The Cinder Axis commander stiffened. "Director?"
The Bureau's silver haired observer narrowed his eyes slightly but did not speak.
Jax muttered under his breath, "I knew this was getting expensive."
Kai felt something strange.
The shard was not reacting wildly.
It was steady.
Like it recognized the presence.
Director Vale looked directly at Kai.
"You surprised me."
Kai forced himself to stay upright. "You planned this."
"Planned?" Vale smiled faintly. "No. I allowed variables to move."
The Cinder Axis troops looked confused.
Their commander stepped forward. "Sir, our contract—"
"Is terminated," Vale said calmly.
Every Cinder Axis soldier froze.
"Withdraw."
There was hesitation.
Then their commander gave a short signal.
Within seconds, the troops retreated back toward the armored vehicle.
The Bureau man finally spoke. "You are overstepping, Vale."
Vale did not look at him. "You are observing. I am acting."
Lucan's jaw tightened. "Acting for who?"
Vale stepped down from the vehicle smoothly.
For a brief second, the shard flickered brighter.
Kai felt pressure building again.
Not aggressive.
Heavy.
Measured.
Vale stopped ten steps away.
"Captain Lucan. Independent broker Jax. Black Division lurking somewhere in the trees. Cinder Axis retreating. Bureau observing."
He glanced around slowly.
"You all think this is about controlling a boy."
Kai's grip tightened.
"It is not."
Renn shifted closer to Kai. "Then what is it about?"
Vale looked at the shard.
"It is about which world stabilizes."
Silence followed.
Theo whispered, "What does that mean?"
Vale's eyes moved back to Kai. "You have seen it. The other side."
Kai did not deny it.
"The reflection," Vale continued. "Not a hallucination. Not a simple parallel. A divergence."
The Bureau man's voice cut in. "Speculation."
Vale smiled faintly. "Denial."
Suddenly, gunfire erupted from the trees behind Vale.
Not aimed at Kai.
Aimed at Vale.
Sharp precise shots.
Black Division.
Vale moved before the bullets reached him.
Too fast.
He shifted one step sideways and every bullet curved mid air, deflecting into the ground.
Renn stared. "Okay. That is not normal."
Black armored figures emerged from the forest, weapons raised.
Their leader's voice echoed. "Director Vale, you are not authorized to intervene."
Vale turned slightly. "Authorization is a matter of timing."
He lifted one hand casually.
The ground beneath the Black Division squad rippled.
Not exploding.
Shifting.
Their footing destabilized instantly.
Lucan swore quietly. "He is using resonance without a visible source."
Theo's voice trembled slightly. "No. He is not using it. He is aligned with it."
Kai felt it clearly now.
Vale was not forcing energy.
He was synchronized with something deeper.
Like the thin rhythm Kai had felt under the suppressor field.
The Black Division soldiers attempted to fire again but their weapons malfunctioned mid trigger.
Vale lowered his hand.
"I do not have time for territorial disputes."
The Black Division leader hesitated.
Then signaled retreat.
They vanished into the trees.
The forest grew quiet again.
Only Vale, the Bureau observer, Kai's group and Jax's team remained.
Mira stepped closer to Kai. "He is dangerous."
"Yes," Kai replied softly.
Vale finally faced him fully.
"You heard it, did you not?"
Kai did not pretend to misunderstand.
"The voice," Vale clarified. "You let it guide you."
Lucan's eyes snapped to Kai. "What voice?"
Renn looked alarmed. "What voice?"
Kai hesitated.
Vale answered for him. "The stabilized divergence. The version of him that survived a different outcome."
Theo's breathing quickened. "You are saying that reflection is real."
"Very real," Vale replied calmly.
The Bureau man spoke again. "There is no confirmed cross convergence."
Vale looked mildly amused. "Your models are outdated."
Kai felt anger rise.
"You are all talking about me like I am not here."
Vale's gaze softened slightly. "You are here. That is why this matters."
He took one slow step forward.
Lucan immediately stepped between them.
Vale stopped.
"Captain," he said calmly, "if I wished harm, this forest would already be silent."
That was not comforting.
Jax shifted closer, whispering to his silver haired partner, "If this is above Bureau level, we are in deep."
Kai met Vale's eyes.
"What do you want?"
Vale studied him for a long moment.
"Choice."
Renn blinked. "That is suspiciously vague."
Vale ignored him.
"In one path, the divergence stabilizes gradually. Slow growth. Managed exposure. Factions competing, testing, pushing."
He gestured lightly around them.
"In another path, suppression. Forced extraction. Acceleration. Collision between versions."
Kai felt the shard pulse once at the word collision.
"And what happens then?" Mira asked quietly.
Vale's voice lost all warmth.
"Only one remains."
Silence.
The Bureau man finally moved forward slightly. "This is fear manipulation."
Vale did not look at him. "It is probability."
Kai's thoughts raced.
If the other version was real.
If one had to remain.
Was that why the voice offered control?
Was it preparing?
Vale stepped back slightly.
"I will not force your decision tonight."
That surprised everyone.
Renn frowned. "That is new."
Vale continued, "You will be hunted regardless. That is inevitable now."
He looked at Kai one last time.
"When the next alignment occurs, you must choose whether to integrate… or oppose."
The shard flickered brighter.
Kai felt the faint echo again.
Watching.
Waiting.
Vale turned and began walking into the trees.
"Director," the Bureau man called. "This is not concluded."
Vale's voice drifted back calmly. "It has barely begun."
He vanished into the forest shadows.
For several long seconds, no one spoke.
Then Renn exhaled loudly. "So. Good news. We are apparently part of a multi world elimination tournament."
Theo rubbed his forehead. "This is bigger than faction politics."
Lucan looked at Kai carefully. "Did you truly hear a voice?"
Kai hesitated.
Then nodded.
Mira's hand tightened in his sleeve.
Jax stepped forward slowly. "Well. I was going to offer safe houses and forged IDs."
He gave a weak smile.
"Now I am thinking underground bunker."
The mechanical beast's core glowed faint blue beside them.
The forest seemed normal again.
But Kai could still feel it.
Not outside.
Inside.
A steady presence.
Not whispering now.
Just aware.
And somewhere far away, under a broken sky, another Kai opened his eyes and placed his hand against an invisible barrier.
On Kai's palm, the shard grew warm in response.
