Chapter 25 - Chapter 25

Cold night air hit them the moment they pushed open the ventilation hatch.

They emerged into a forested slope outside the lower city boundary. In the distance, the capital lights glowed like nothing had happened underground.

Renn dropped onto the grass. "Fresh air. I almost missed oxygen."

Theo adjusted his glasses. "We should not relax. Harmonic spikes travel faster than we do."

Lucan scanned the tree line. His hunters formed a loose perimeter without needing orders.

The mechanical beast climbed out last, metal scraping against stone. Its blue core glowed softer now, like it was conserving energy.

Mira looked back at the city lights. "It looks normal."

"It always does," Aria replied quietly.

Kai stood still, the shard in his hand.

The connection was still there.

Faint but steady.

Not attacking him.

Waiting.

Renn noticed his expression. "Please tell me you are not seeing your evil twin again."

"Not seeing," Kai answered. "Feeling."

"That is worse."

Lucan stepped closer. "You cannot stay near the capital. Too many eyes."

Theo nodded. "After that spike, monitoring stations will triangulate."

"Who exactly is triangulating?" Renn asked.

Lucan did not hesitate. "Everyone."

Before anyone could respond, a sharp whistle cut through the trees.

Aria's hawk lifted instantly.

Three figures stepped from the shadows ahead.

Not armored.

Not uniformed.

One wore a loose jacket and leaned casually against a tree like he had been waiting for friends. He looked around their age. Messy brown hair. Amused eyes.

"Well," he said lightly, "that explains the fireworks underground."

Renn blinked. "And you are?"

"Name is Jax," he replied. "Freelance information broker. I sell answers."

Theo frowned. "How did you find this location?"

Jax shrugged. "I follow interesting patterns. Tonight was loud."

Lucan stepped forward. "Leave."

Jax held up both hands. "Relax. If I meant harm, you would already be surrounded."

From behind him, two others emerged. A tall girl with short silver hair and twin daggers at her waist. And a skinny boy carrying a long case across his back.

Renn groaned. "More factions."

Jax grinned. "Not faction. Opportunity."

He looked directly at Kai.

"You are trending."

Kai frowned. "Trending?"

"Half the underground network is talking about a resonance user who can override machines."

Theo stiffened. "It has not even been twelve hours."

Jax tapped the side of his head. "Information moves faster than time."

Lucan's voice turned colder. "State your purpose."

Jax's smile faded slightly. "You are about to be hunted by Bureau, Black Division and at least two private contractors. I can help you disappear."

Renn crossed his arms. "For free?"

Jax laughed. "Nothing is free."

Mira stepped closer to Kai. "What do you want?"

"Access," Jax answered simply. "When the time comes."

"That is vague," Theo said sharply.

"Exactly."

Lucan studied him. "Why involve yourself?"

Jax's playful tone lowered. "Because I have seen what happens when resonance goes uncontrolled. Entire districts erased."

The forest went quiet.

Kai felt the shard pulse softly again.

Jax's eyes flickered to it.

"That is not a normal crystal."

"No," Kai replied.

Jax tilted his head. "Then we have mutual interest."

Before any decision could be made, Aria's hawk screeched sharply from above.

Lucan turned instantly. "Positions."

Red dots flickered through the trees.

Renn sighed. "Of course."

From the tree line, masked mercenaries advanced in a tight formation. Heavier gear than before. Night vision optics glowing faintly.

A voice echoed from behind them. "Secure the target alive."

Jax swore under his breath. "That was faster than expected."

His silver haired companion drew her daggers smoothly. "You owe me extra."

The skinny boy opened his case, revealing a compact long ranged rifle.

Kai glanced at Lucan.

Lucan gave one short nod.

Temporary alliance.

The mercenaries opened fire.

Energy bolts tore through branches.

The mechanical beast moved first, stepping in front of Kai and firing a controlled blue burst that forced the front line to scatter.

Renn's bear charged again, slamming into two attackers and sending them flying.

Aria and her hawk moved in synchronized strikes, disorienting the flank.

Theo pulled out a small device and threw it into the clearing.

It exploded in bright white light.

The forest lit up like daytime.

Jax moved fast, far faster than his relaxed attitude suggested. He slipped between trees and disarmed one mercenary with precise strikes.

The silver haired girl spun low, cutting through an attacker's leg armor.

The skinny boy fired clean, calculated shots that disabled weapons without killing.

Kai stayed centered, focusing.

The shard pulsed.

He felt interference.

Someone else nearby was emitting resonance.

Not Riftborn.

Human.

He turned sharply.

At the far edge of the clearing stood a tall figure in a dark coat, watching calmly.

Not fighting.

Observing.

The same silver haired Bureau man from before.

He did not move to assist the mercenaries.

He simply watched.

Then he lifted a small communicator.

The mercenaries suddenly shifted tactics.

Instead of pressing forward, they began deploying circular devices onto the ground.

Theo's eyes widened. "Containment grid!"

Blue lines shot between the devices, forming a glowing cage around the clearing.

Renn hit the barrier and was thrown back.

"Not good!"

Lucan slashed at one node, but the energy field repaired instantly.

The mechanical beast fired at another, but the blast was absorbed.

Jax cursed. "They are not here to capture. They are testing."

Kai felt the shard heat sharply.

The barrier pulsed in rhythm with it.

The silver haired Bureau man finally spoke from across the field, his voice amplified.

"Subject Kai. Step forward and this ends peacefully."

"Peacefully?" Renn shouted. "You blew up a tunnel!"

The man ignored him.

"You have seen the alternate harmonic reflection. You know this path does not end quietly."

Kai's chest tightened.

How much did they know?

The barrier shrank slightly.

Closing in.

Mira grabbed his arm. "Do not listen."

The mechanical beast's core flickered unstable again.

Blue to red.

Red to blue.

The shard vibrated painfully in Kai's hand.

The other signal surged.

Stronger than ever.

For a split second, the world around him blurred.

The trees.

The mercenaries.

His friends.

Overlaying it was another image.

The broken skyline again.

And the other Kai standing at the edge of a rooftop.

Watching through him.

Then the overlay vanished.

The barrier shrank closer.

Jax looked at Kai sharply. "If you can override machines, override this."

"It is not a machine," Theo said urgently. "It is harmonic field projection."

The silver haired man's voice echoed again.

"Step forward."

Kai looked at his friends.

Renn bruised but standing.

Mira scared but steady.

Aria ready.

Lucan silent but protective.

Jax calculating.

Too many pieces on the board.

The shard burned in his palm.

And then, softly, inside his mind, a voice that was not his own whispered.

"Let me."

Kai froze.

The barrier closed within three steps.

The mechanical beast's core turned fully red.

And Kai had to decide whether the voice in his head was his greatest weapon.

Or the beginning of something far worse.
