Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

The forest was too quiet after the blast.

Smoke drifted between broken trees. The clearing was scorched in a perfect circle, as if something had drawn a boundary and erased everything inside it.

Kai stood in the center, the dim shard resting in his palm.

His fingers were still trembling.

Renn was the first to move. "Kai."

Aria hurried over next. "Are you hurt?"

Kai shook his head slowly. "I do not think so."

Bouncy wobbled up his arm and smacked his cheek as if checking him.

"I am fine," Kai muttered.

Around them, the black coated academy hunters were slowly regaining consciousness. The mercenaries were gone. Not dead. Just gone.

Retreated.

Theo looked around carefully. "They fled the moment the pulse stabilized."

The young academy hunter pushed himself up, eyes fixed on Kai.

"You absorbed it," he said quietly.

Kai frowned. "I did not absorb anything."

He looked down.

The shard in his hand was no longer glowing violently. It was faint, almost asleep.

Mira stepped closer, her voice unsteady. "It calmed when you touched it."

Renn crossed his arms. "So what exactly is this thing?"

The young hunter hesitated.

Then he gave a short nod to his remaining team members. They did not attack. They simply watched.

"It is not a fragment," he said. "It is a resonance shard."

Theo blinked. "That is not recorded in academy archives."

"Because it is restricted," the hunter replied.

Kai finally met his gaze. "Restricted for what reason?"

The young man studied him carefully before answering.

"Because it reacts to a specific frequency."

Kai's chest felt slightly tight.

"What frequency?" Aria asked.

The hunter did not look at her.

He looked only at Kai.

"Yours."

Silence fell.

Renn let out a short laugh. "That is not funny."

The hunter did not smile.

Mira whispered, "That is why they sealed me. It reacted to me first… then to him."

Kai's thoughts began to piece together.

"You said they were going to seal you," he said softly to Mira. "Why?"

She looked down. "Because when I am near these shards, they wake up."

Theo's voice dropped. "You are a vessel?"

Mira shook her head quickly. "No. I do not have a system. I never awakened one."

The young hunter added, "But her energy signature matches old Rift records."

Kai felt something cold slide through his mind.

Rift.

Again.

Renn rubbed his face. "So now we have academy security, mercenaries, masked guardians, and sealed girls. Great."

Aria stayed focused. "Why chase her now?"

The hunter answered this time without hesitation. "Because the sealed vault was breached from inside."

That made everyone freeze.

"Inside?" Theo repeated.

"Yes," the hunter said. "Someone helped her."

Mira's eyes widened. "I did not see anyone."

Kai believed her.

He did not know why, but he did.

Before the conversation could continue, one of the academy hunters suddenly stiffened.

"Captain."

The young man turned.

A faint tremor ran through the ground.

Kai felt it too.

The shard in his hand vibrated softly.

From deeper within the forest, a low hum began to echo.

Renn's expression shifted. "Tell me that is not more friends."

The hum grew louder.

Trees began to sway though there was no wind.

Theo's face went pale. "Energy concentration rising again. But not from the shard."

All eyes turned toward the darker part of the woods.

Then something stepped out.

Not a hunter.

Not a mercenary.

A beast.

But not a normal one.

Its body was thin and distorted, as if made from cracked glass. Light flickered through fractures in its form. Its eyes glowed with pale blue lines.

The academy hunters immediately stepped back.

"That is impossible," one whispered.

The young captain clenched his jaw. "Riftborn."

Kai's heart skipped.

The beast's gaze swept across the clearing before locking onto Kai's hand.

Specifically, the shard.

It let out a distorted screech.

Then it lunged.

"Move!" Aria shouted.

Everyone scattered.

The Riftborn beast was fast. Faster than the lightning wolf from before.

It ignored everyone else and charged straight for Kai.

"Why me?" Renn yelled while dragging Theo out of the way.

Kai did not answer.

He understood.

The shard.

The resonance.

Bouncy expanded automatically in front of him.

The Riftborn claw struck.

The slime shield cracked.

Actually cracked.

Kai's eyes widened.

Bouncy had never been damaged like that before.

"Back!" Kai commanded.

The slime retreated slightly, reforming shakily.

The young captain summoned his beast, a tall armored stag. It rammed the Riftborn from the side.

The impact pushed it away for only a second.

It twisted unnaturally and swiped again.

Mira screamed.

The shard in Kai's hand flared faintly.

The Riftborn paused mid strike.

Kai noticed.

It was not attacking randomly.

It was reacting to the shard's pulse.

Theo shouted from behind a tree, "It is drawn to resonance!"

Kai took a breath.

"Captain," he called to the young hunter. "If it is Riftborn, you know its weakness."

The captain hesitated only briefly.

"Overload."

Kai nodded.

He understood enough.

"Everyone fall back."

Renn looked like he wanted to argue, but Aria pulled him away.

Kai stepped forward alone.

The Riftborn shrieked and rushed him again.

"Bouncy," Kai whispered, "thin layer. Mirror spread."

The slime stretched wide and nearly invisible, forming a reflective membrane around Kai's position.

The Riftborn struck.

The shard in Kai's hand pulsed sharply.

Energy rippled through the mirror surface.

For a split second, the Riftborn's own energy reflected back into its fractured body.

Cracks deepened across its form.

The captain reacted instantly.

"Now!"

His armored stag charged again, channeling a concentrated strike into the Riftborn's chest.

The beast shattered into fragments of fading light.

Silence returned.

But not peaceful silence.

Heavy silence.

The academy hunters looked shaken.

Renn exhaled slowly. "Okay. I officially hate tonight."

Mira stared at the place where the Riftborn had vanished. "That was because of me."

"No," Kai said quietly.

"It was because of this."

He lifted the shard slightly.

The captain stepped closer, studying Kai carefully.

"You handled resonance without collapsing."

Kai met his gaze. "What does that mean?"

The captain hesitated.

Then he said something that made even the wind seem to pause.

"It means your name is already in restricted records."

Renn frowned. "He is literally a first year."

The captain ignored him.

"To the higher council," he continued, "you are listed as Potential Catalyst."

The words hung in the air.

Kai's grip tightened slightly.

"Catalyst for what?"

The captain did not answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the distant horizon, where faint clouds were gathering unnaturally fast.

"For the second awakening."

Far away, inside the capital Spire, the man in dark blue robes stood before a cracked crystal monitor.

A single word glowed across the fractured surface.

Catalyst.

He closed his eyes slowly.

"So it begins earlier than planned."

Back in the forest, Mira looked at Kai with fear and hope mixed together.

"You did not know?" she asked softly.

Kai shook his head.

But deep inside, something felt different.

The shard in his hand was no longer just reacting.

It was listening.

And somewhere far beyond the forest, something else had heard it answer.
