Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

The forest stayed quiet long after the masked man disappeared.

Kai did not move for a while. He kept staring at the rock where the man had stood. His thoughts were steady on the outside, but inside, questions kept stacking.

Guardian.

Not enemy. Not ally.

Something in between.

Renn broke the silence first. "I hate people who talk in riddles."

Aria sheathed her blade. "He could have finished us."

Theo nodded slowly. "Yes. His control was far beyond ours."

Kai finally exhaled. "Which means this was not about killing us."

"Testing again?" Renn asked.

"Or measuring," Kai replied.

Bouncy suddenly bounced onto Renn's head.

"Get it off," Renn snapped.

The slime wobbled proudly.

Even after everything, it still found ways to cause chaos.

Aria allowed herself a small smile. "We cannot stay here. More scouts might return."

They moved along the stream instead of the main trail. Theo erased traces using a small dust formation. Renn's bear walked behind them, covering footprints.

Kai stayed quiet.

The fragment was gone.

But what bothered him more was how easily they were tracked.

Someone knew their route.

Someone knew the cave.

Someone knew the exact timing.

That was not coincidence.

That was information.

As they reached a small abandoned watchtower near the edge of the forest, Kai stopped.

"We rest here," he said.

Renn looked surprised. "You want to camp after that?"

"Yes."

Aria studied him carefully. "You are thinking."

Kai nodded. "If they wanted us gone, they would not warn us. If they wanted the fragment only, they would not send that many hunters."

Theo frowned. "So what are they doing?"

Kai looked at Bouncy.

"They are watching how we react."

The slime stretched and made a proud wobble.

Renn leaned against the wall. "Great. We are lab rats."

"Then let us be unpredictable ones," Kai said quietly.

Scene Shift

Capital City.

High walls. Silver banners. The central Spire tower rising into the clouds.

Inside a quiet chamber, a middle aged man in dark blue robes stood before a crystal screen.

The masked man's recent encounter replayed in fragments of light.

"Subject survived," a voice reported behind him.

The man folded his hands. "His response time?"

"Improving. Fusion variety increasing."

The man nodded slowly. "And emotional stability?"

"Stable under pressure. Minor fear spike."

The man turned.

His face was calm, sharp eyes reflecting calculation.

"Good."

Behind him, a silver claw emblem hung on the wall.

"Continue observation," he ordered. "Do not interfere unless death becomes certain."

"And the fragment?"

"Let it rest in storage. We will see if he comes after it."

The crystal screen flickered off.

The man looked out the window toward the distant forest.

"Grow faster," he murmured. "Or you will be crushed."

Scene Shift

Back at the watchtower, night settled.

Theo was sketching patterns in a notebook.

Aria sharpened her blade.

Renn argued with Bouncy after the slime stuck to his shoulder again.

Kai sat alone at the broken window, watching the moonlight.

Footsteps.

He did not turn.

"Could not sleep?" Aria asked softly.

"Not yet."

She leaned against the wall beside him.

"You think someone inside the academy leaked our route?"

Kai's jaw tightened slightly.

"I do not know."

Aria studied him. "You suspect someone."

He did not answer directly.

Instead, he asked, "When we left the academy, how many people knew we were heading to the cave?"

She thought for a moment.

"Our instructor. The archive keeper. And…"

She stopped.

"And?" Kai pressed gently.

"And Senior Loran from the logistics hall. He handled our travel permits."

Kai nodded slowly.

He remembered Loran.

Friendly. Talkative.

Too talkative.

Before Aria could respond, Theo's voice cut through the air.

"Movement outside."

Everyone froze.

Renn stood instantly. "More hunters?"

Kai shook his head. "No loud approach this time."

A soft knock echoed from downstairs.

One knock.

Pause.

Two knocks.

Pause.

Then one.

Renn blinked. "What kind of signal is that?"

Theo whispered, "It is an academy emergency pattern."

Kai frowned. "That makes no sense."

Aria moved toward the stairs quietly.

Kai followed.

At the entrance stood a young girl, no older than fifteen, wearing academy robes slightly torn at the sleeves.

She looked exhausted.

"Please," she said, breathing hard. "They are chasing me."

Renn stepped forward suspiciously. "Who?"

Before she could answer, a sharp arrow pierced the wooden door beside her head.

Everyone reacted at once.

Kai pulled her inside.

Another arrow flew through the doorway.

"Down!" Aria shouted.

Outside, shadows moved between trees.

Not the silver claw hunters from earlier.

Different uniforms.

Black coats.

No insignia.

Renn cursed. "New group already?"

The girl trembled. "They followed me from the city."

Kai looked at her carefully. "Why?"

She hesitated.

Then she said something that made the air turn cold.

"Because I stole something."

Theo stared. "What?"

She slowly opened her hand.

Inside her palm was a small crystal shard glowing faint blue.

Not as large as the Core fragment.

But similar.

Kai felt the system react.

A faint pulse inside his chest.

Renn's eyes widened. "You are joking."

Aria whispered, "Another fragment?"

The girl shook her head quickly. "No. It is not complete. It is broken. They said it was worthless."

Another arrow struck the wall.

Voices approached.

Kai made a decision.

"We cannot defend this tower."

Renn grinned despite the tension. "Finally, a chase scene."

Kai looked at the girl. "Can you run?"

She nodded.

Bouncy bounced onto her head.

She squeaked. "What is that?"

"Good luck charm," Renn said.

Kai turned to the others. "Stream path again. Then split at the fork. Regroup at the stone bridge."

Aria smiled slightly. "Unpredictable, right?"

Outside, the black coated hunters closed in.

Kai kicked open the back window.

"Go!"

They jumped into the dark forest once more.

Behind them, the watchtower door exploded inward.

A deep voice echoed through the night.

"Do not let the shard escape!"

Kai's heart pounded.

Another fragment.

Another group.

And now a new girl involved.

As they ran through the trees, Kai realized something important.

The world was bigger than he thought.

The masked guardian.

The silver claw.

Now black coats.

Multiple forces were moving around the Core.

And they all knew more than he did.

Ahead, the forest split into two paths.

Kai grabbed the girl's wrist.

"Trust me," he said.

Behind them, footsteps grew louder.

Then suddenly, a massive net shot through the air from the trees above.

Not aimed at them.

But at the girl.

Kai's eyes widened.

The hunters were not targeting him.

They were targeting her.

The net dropped fast.

And there was no time left to think.
