Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Rift Zone Edge – Fragile Dawn

Dawn broke over the outer rift zone — pale light filtering through ash clouds, turning everything gray and red.

Miko and Kael had collapsed in a shallow depression behind a cluster of jagged rocks — far enough from the active rift that the ground no longer trembled, close enough that they could still hear the low hum of leaking shadows.

Kael slept — fitful, feverish.

His breathing was shallow, bandages soaked through again.

Miko sat beside him — knees drawn up, watching the horizon.

The seal was quiet — almost gentle.

She didn't trust it.

She tore the last clean strip from her hoodie — re-wrapped the deepest cut on his side.

He stirred — winced — but didn't wake.

Miko leaned back against the rock — exhausted.

She hadn't slept more than an hour in two days.

The seal pulsed — once, soft.

Rest.

She closed her eyes.

Just for a moment.

When she opened them — the sky was brighter.

Kael was awake — sitting up, back against the rock, watching her.

"You didn't sleep," he said.

Miko rubbed her face.

"Someone had to watch."

Kael looked at the bandages.

"You changed them again."

Miko shrugged.

"You were bleeding through."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"Thank you."

Miko looked away.

"Don't thank me.

I'm the reason you're bleeding."

Kael shifted — winced.

"You're the reason I'm still breathing."

Miko met his eyes.

"That's not how it feels."

Kael studied her.

"How does it feel?"

Miko exhaled.

"Like I'm becoming something I hate.

Every time I use it… it gets easier.

Like it's fitting into me.

Like I'm fitting into it."

Kael was silent for a long moment.

Then he said:

"You're still you."

Miko laughed — soft, broken.

"Am I?"

Kael reached out — slow, careful — touched her hand.

"You saved me.

Twice.

That's you.

Not the seal."

Miko looked at his hand on hers.

The seal pulsed — warm, curious.

She didn't pull away.

Kael continued.

"We're not done yet.

We find the source.

We end it."

Miko nodded.

"We end it."

They stood — slowly.

Kael leaned on her — just enough.

They walked — toward the horizon.

The seal stayed quiet.

For now.

To be continued…
