Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Rift-Walkers’ Offer – A Dangerous Bargain

The rift-walkers' camp was larger than Miko expected — a loose circle of tents and lean-tos hidden in a shallow basin ringed by tall, jagged rocks that shimmered with faint illusion wards.

No banners.

No fires visible from a distance.

Just quiet movement, guarded looks, and the low hum of containment runes etched into the stone.

Rhea led them to the central tent — larger than the others, canvas patched with leather and wire.

Inside — a low table, cushions, lanterns burning with soft blue flame.

An older man sat at the head — gray hair cropped short, scar running from temple to jaw.

He looked up as they entered.

Rhea spoke first.

"Elder Torin.

This is Miko Hayashi.

Bearer of the Crimson Seal.

And Kael Voss.

Her… sponsor."

Torin's eyes lingered on the seal — then on Kael.

"Voss," he said.

"Thought your family stayed inside the walls."

Kael's voice was flat.

"Some of us don't."

Torin nodded — once.

"Sit."

They sat.

Miko felt every eye on her — not hostile, but hungry for answers.

Torin leaned forward.

"We've tracked the seal's resonance for years.

It's been dormant since Lirien Veyne.

Now it's awake.

And loud."

Miko met his gaze.

"What do you want from me?"

Torin's voice was quiet.

"To keep it from opening the final rift.

The one that would swallow this world whole."

Miko felt cold.

"The final rift?"

Torin nodded.

"The first rift — the one that birthed all others — is sealed deep beneath the academy.

But it's weakening.

The seal is the key.

And someone is turning it."

Kael spoke.

"My father."

Torin looked at him.

"Possibly.

Or someone using him.

We don't know yet."

Miko leaned forward.

"How do we stop it?"

Torin's eyes flicked to the seal.

"You learn to balance it.

Not fight it.

Not feed it.

Balance it."

Miko stared.

"How?"

Torin stood.

"Follow me."

They followed him outside — to a smaller tent at the edge of camp.

Inside — a single stone pedestal.

On it — a small, cracked crystal.

Crimson veins ran through it — faint, but alive.

Torin spoke.

"This is a fragment of Lirien's core.

The only piece we recovered."

Miko felt the seal flare — interested.

Torin continued.

"Touch it.

It will show you what she learned.

What she failed to do."

Kael stepped forward.

"No."

Torin looked at him.

"She needs to see."

Kael's shadows coiled.

"She needs to decide."

Miko looked at Kael.

"I want to see."

Kael met her eyes — long, searching.

Then — slowly — stepped back.

Miko reached out.

Her fingers brushed the crystal.

The world vanished.

Vision.

Lirien — younger, terrified — standing in a chamber like the one they'd found.

The seal on her collarbone glowing bright.

Shadows pouring from her — wild, uncontrolled.

She fought — pushed back.

The seal fought harder.

She screamed — silent.

Then — a voice.

Not hers.

Balance.

Not fight.

Accept.

Lirien hesitated.

Then — reached inward.

Shadows calmed — slightly.

She breathed — with the seal.

It quieted.

For a moment.

Then surged again — harder.

She staggered.

The vision ended.

Miko gasped — stumbling back.

Kael caught her.

Torin watched.

"What did you see?"

Miko's voice shook.

"She tried to balance it.

It almost worked.

Then it betrayed her."

Torin nodded.

"That's why she failed.

She trusted it for a moment.

It used that moment."

Miko looked at the crystal.

"I'm not her."

Torin's voice was quiet.

"Then don't make her mistake."

Miko looked at Kael.

He met her eyes.

"We'll find another way."

Torin smiled — thin.

"There is no other way."

Miko felt the seal pulse — once, almost agreeing.

To be continued…
