Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Outer Rift Zone – First Contact

The outer rift zone was a wasteland.

Cracked earth, blackened stone, air thick with sulfur and ash.

Rifts glowed in the distance — small, unstable, leaking shadows that writhed like smoke.

Kael and Miko reached it at dusk — two days after leaving the caves.

Kael was slower — wounds still raw, but healing.

Miko walked beside him — shadows trailing them both.

The seal was quiet — watchful.

They stopped at the edge of a small rift — a tear in the ground, glowing red.

Shadows leaked from it — thin, probing.

Kael crouched.

"This is it.

The edge of their territory."

Miko looked at the rift.

"What now?"

Kael stood.

"We wait."

They waited.

Night fell.

The rift pulsed — brighter.

Then — movement.

From the darkness — figures.

Not masked.

Not cloaked.

Humanoid — but wrong.

Skin black, veined with crimson.

Eyes glowing red.

No mouths.

Just voids.

They stepped out — slow, deliberate.

Five.

Then ten.

Then more.

Kael's shadows rose — wall forming.

Miko stepped beside him.

Crimson shadows joined — stronger.

The creatures stopped — stared.

One stepped forward — raised a hand.

Crimson tendrils snapped out — toward Miko.

Kael's shadows met them — clashing.

Miko pushed — crimson storm exploding outward.

Tendrils met — shattered.

The creatures attacked — fast, silent.

Kael fought — shadows whipping, cutting.

One creature lunged — claws raking his side.

He grunted — blood blooming.

Miko spun — shadow spear piercing its chest.

It dissolved — mist.

Another leaped — claws aimed at her throat.

She dodged — tendril wrapping its leg, yanking it down.

Kael finished it — shadow crushing its skull.

More came.

Ten became twenty.

The rift pulsed — brighter.

More emerged.

Kael's breathing grew ragged.

Miko felt the seal surge — eager, hungry.

More.

She pushed harder — shadows storming.

Creatures fell — dissolving into mist.

But more came.

Kael staggered — blood dripping.

Miko caught him.

"We can't hold them."

Kael looked at her.

"Then we don't."

He raised a hand — shadows surging — forming a massive wall.

It held — barely.

The creatures battered against it — claws scraping, tendrils probing.

Miko felt the seal pull — hard.

Let me.

She hesitated.

Then — let go.

Crimson shadows exploded — merging with Kael's black.

The wall strengthened — pushed back.

Creatures screamed — silent, but felt.

They retreated — dissolving into the rift.

The rift dimmed.

Silence.

Kael dropped to one knee.

Miko caught him.

The seal pulsed — triumphant.

Kael looked at her.

"You let it out."

Miko nodded.

"I had to."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"How do you feel?"

Miko looked at her hands — crimson fading.

"Stronger."

Kael exhaled.

"That's what scares me."

Miko helped him stand.

They walked — away from the rift.

The seal pulsed — once, content.

To be continued…
