Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Meeting with Kindness

POV: Elara

As she stepped out of the building, she felt the crisp morning air; it carried the faint scent of freshly baked bread and blooming flowers from the nearby café. She welcomed the feeling because it was a change from the sterile, tense atmosphere she had just left the interview room. Elara had wandered into the quiet building. The entrance was quiet because all the staff were already in the office, and it wasn't time for break yet. It was mid-morning, her mind still buzzing from the interview she'd just had. Her chest tightened every time she recalled the way that man, whose name is Kaelion Thorne, had studied her, that cold, assessing gaze, and the quiet thrill that she hated admitting it gave her. Well, not meaning to pry, but she looked up the owner of Thorne Group and found out his name is the Almighty Kaelion Thorne, CEO and Owner of the Thorne empire. No wonder he's so rude, arrogant, and condescending, because he has power and wealth.

I cannot… cannot… let him get to me. He's infuriating. Arrogant. Condescending. Everything I hate.

She tried to shake it off, hurrying along the sidewalk with her folder pressed to her chest, making a mental note to call her best friend, Lena, to tell her how her interview went and maybe vent a little anger and frustration. Hence, she feels better; her best friend has a way of making her feel better; she loves her so much. She cannot ask for a better friend when a sudden collision sends her tumbling forward. Papers flew, fluttering like startled birds, and she barely caught herself against a lamppost.

"I am so sorry!" a calm, melodic voice said immediately, warm and steady.

As Elara looked up, she saw a tall man with kind brown eyes, a pretty smile that seemed to make the world a little softer, and hair that caught the sunlight in golden-brown highlights. My God, he is so handsome, like he just came out of a magazine. He bent down to help her gather the scattered papers.

"It's okay," she said quickly, cheeks flushing. "It's my fault. I wasn't paying attention."

He chuckled softly, brushing a stray sheet into her folder. "Are you sure you're okay? You seem a little… frazzled."

Elara blinked, momentarily thrown off by the genuine concern in his eyes. "I'm okay. Really. Just…some interviews that didn't go well, you know?"

He shook his head intentionally, his eyes gentle but perceptive. "Ah. The dreaded interviews. I know the feeling. Don't worry, you'll get the job if you keep that determination. It's rare to see someone so focused."

Her chest fluttered. Focused? Determined? Rare? She had never heard a man speak to her like this before, as if she were seen, noticed, and respected, rather than judged.

"Thanks," she murmured, adjusting her folder in her hands, suddenly feeling self-conscious under his soft gaze.

"My name is Cassian," he said, reaching out a hand in a casual, friendly gesture. "Cassian Vale. And you are?"

"Elara… Elara Quinn," she replied, shaking his hand. The warmth of his grip lingered longer than necessary, and she felt a strange, unfamiliar ease settle over her.

"Quinn. Nice to meet you," he said, his voice calm and inviting. "Are you heading to work, maybe another interview, or… just surviving the city chaos?"

Elara snorted softly, despite herself. "Both, I guess. Trying to survive, trying to get somewhere better."

Cassian tilted his head, studying her briefly, then smiled. "I get it. Life can be relentless. But don't let it beat you. You seem like the kind of person who won't let it."

Her heart skipped a beat at his words. The first male presence she had encountered in weeks who didn't intimidate her, judge her, or make her feel small. Why does he make it feel easy?

"Thank you," she said softly, almost to herself.

Cassian's eyes sparkled, faint amusement dancing in them. "You're welcome. Hey, if you don't mind, I can get your number and be on the lookout for any job openings, and also talk to some people I know for you and give you feedback."

Elara is flustered and slightly mortified. "Oh… that's… that's very kind of you. Thank you," as they both exchanged numbers.

Cassian's smile widened just a fraction. "Don't mention it. I like helping people who actually put in effort. You're impressive, Elara."

Her cheeks burned. Impressive? He actually thinks I'm impressive? She found herself fumbling for words, mentally cursing how flustered he made her.

"Right… I should probably—uh— get going," she said to him, Elara adjusting her bag.

"Of course," Cassian replied, nodding. "Good luck with everything. And remember, don't let the chaos win."

Elara smiled faintly, feeling lighter than she had in weeks. She felt… seen. Appreciated. And for reasons she couldn't quite name, her chest fluttered every time she thought of him.

She waved and continued on her way, but she couldn't shake the thought of his kind eyes and calm, easy presence. Why does he make me feel like I could actually breathe for a second?

Her thoughts were interrupted when she rounded a corner and froze.

There, at the entrance of the company building where she just come out, standing casually waiting while pressing his phone and checking his time as if he was late for a meeting, was the man she had tried so hard to forget minutes ago. The one whose glare will haunt her nightmares and whose arrogance and humiliation she will never forget.

Kaelion.

How did he get here? Of course, he used the elevator while she had been working down the stairs in this big building.

And now… he was looking directly at her.

Her stomach twisted, her pulse skyrocketed, and the strange warmth she had felt with Cassian drained away, replaced by the cold, infuriating tension only Kaelion could provoke.

No. Not him. Not here. Not now.

She looked away, trying to distract him from noticing her. Immediately, a sleek black car pulled up, and his assistant ran to open the door for him. He entered swiftly, and the car sped off.

As she stepped forward, her heart pounding, she realized she was completely, utterly caught between the infuriating intensity of Kaelion Thorne and the unexpected, dangerous warmth of Cassian Vale.

Elara Quinn froze, caught between two very different men—one who intimidated her to her core, and one who made her heart inexplicably flutter.

And she had no idea which path would shape the next chapter of her life or which one could destroy it.
