POV: Kaelion Thorne
Kaelion sat behind the massive mahogany desk, hands steepled, eyes narrowing at the pile of resumes and assessment notes in front of him. The room was quiet, except for the faint hum of the air conditioning and the soft ticking of a clock that somehow seemed louder than it should.
And immediately, his best friend Cassian walked in. He looked up, acknowledged him, and said, "What's up with you?"
Cassian, taking a seat, answered. "I am okay, you look stressed, what's going on with you?"
Kaelion immediately answered, "You know I had an interview with this candidate for my personal assistant position… Elara Quinn. She's different. Bold. Didn't flinch at me at all, actually, she talked back."
Cassian chuckled and said, " Did you say talked back to you? Wow, finally, someone's standing up to you!"
"Yeah, that intrigued me," Kaelion said, "Most people just nod and smile. Not her. She had opinions, and she voiced them," he continued
Cassian smiled and said, " I've met her, actually. She's really nice. Innocent, too, in a good way."
"Hmm," Kaelion hummed and said, "Innocent? Bold? Sounds like she's got layers."
"So… are you going to give her the job?" Cassian asked as a matter of fact.
Kaelion shrugged, "I don't think so," he continued, "I mean, maybe not yet."
Cassian pressed on, saying, "Come on, Kael. She's sharp, smart, intelligence and reliable… I'll put in a good word for her. She's exactly the kind of person you need around."
Kaelion looked up at his best friend, as a matter of fact. "And you know this how?" Kaelion asked
"I met her by your company building entrance, and I must say she is good for this job, considering you fired your previous PAs in a month or two." He continues, "She looks like someone who can handle you." He said, smirking.
Kaelion answered coldly, "We will see," thinking about it.
Cassian speaks again, "By the way, how's Seraphina? I heard she's working in your company now."
Now it's Kaelion's turn to grin. He knows his best friend has always had a thing for Seraphina. "You've been hearing a lot about my company these days, huh? He teased him.
Cassien laughed, "Seems like it. Alright, I've got a meeting with an investor. Catch you later, Karl."
" See you around, Cass," Kaelion replied.
He leaned back, studying the last candidate. Elara Quinn.
Unbelievable, he muttered to himself, though no one was there to hear him. Her boldness had left a mark and an imprint he didn't like admitting existed. Every word she had thrown at him during the interview, every sharp glance, every defiant stance, had all been an affront. And yet he couldn't stop thinking about her.
It's efficiency, he told himself firmly. She's efficient. Smart. Quick. He thinks she will be able to do her job.
Efficiency, yes. That was the only reason he was considering her for the personal assistant position. Not because of the way her chest rose with determination when she argued back, not because of the faint blush he'd caught when she realized he was challenging her. Not because of the way her voice carried both defiance and charm in equal measure. That was irrelevant.
Completely irrelevant.
He had always prided himself on being logical, ruthless, and efficient. Emotions were weaknesses. Weaknesses were liabilities. And Elara Quinn was a potential asset. That was all.
The assistant hovered quietly in the doorway, already sensing the tension but wisely remaining silent. He had learned that Kaelion's thought processes were not to be interrupted ever.
"Hire her," Kaelion finally said, voice low, almost too casual, as if the decision had been simple. "She starts Monday."
The assistant blinked, surprise flickering in his expression. "Are you sure, sir? After everything?"
Kaelion's eyes narrowed, voice colder now. "Efficiency isn't about emotions. I said, " Hire her. Make it happen."
He leaned back, folding his arms, forcing himself to focus on the logical reasoning behind the decision. She's capable. She's quick. She can think on her feet. That's what I need. That's it.
And yet, as he stared at the resume again, he caught himself remembering her sharp retort, the fire in her eyes, the way she hadn't flinched when he dismissed her outright.
I don't care about that, he told himself firmly, clenching his jaw. It's irrelevant. Efficiency.
Still, the thought gnawed at him, persistent and unwelcome.
Why can't I stop thinking about her?
He shook his head, trying to banish the thought. No. This wasn't about anything else. She was a candidate. She would perform the role. Nothing more.
"Sir?" the assistant prompted gently.
Kaelion's gaze snapped back to the desk. "Yes. Inform her. Make the arrangements. Prepare her workspace. Orientation. Everything she'll need."
The assistant nodded quickly, masking his amusement and intrigue. He had noticed the unusual pause, the faint tightening around Kaelion's mouth when he thought she wasn't looking. A flicker of interest, maybe. But Kaelion would never admit that. Never.
Kaelion turned back to the window, watching the city beyond. Everything in his life had always been controlled, calculated, predictable. Every step measured, every person useful or disposable. He had never had someone disrupt that balance so thoroughly, so unexpectedly.
She won't even know what hit her, he murmured under his breath. Efficiency.
But deep down, a thought that he refused to acknowledge in full began to stir. A thought that made his pulse spike just enough to be noticeable, a thought that whispered a dangerous possibility.
What if she's more than efficient?
Kaelion clenched his fists on the desk, forcing himself to focus. He could not allow himself to be distracted. She was a tool. A capable tool. Nothing more. That had to be the truth.
And yet, as he prepared for her arrival, he realized something that unsettled him more than he cared to admit:
I want to see how she reacts when she finds out who I really am.
The assistant cleared his throat again. "I'll inform her immediately, sir. But I can't help but notice she's going to be challenging."
Kaelion's lips pressed into a thin, controlled line. "Good," he said. "I like challenges."
But even as he said it, a part of him, a small, dangerous part, wished she would challenge him in ways he hadn't anticipated. Ways that went beyond efficiency, beyond the confines of an office.
And for the first time in a long while, Kaelion Thorne felt unsteady.
It is Monday morning, and as Elara Quinn walked toward the elevator, ready to start her new position, she had no idea that the man who had just hired her, the man who haunted her thoughts and fueled her frustrations was not just the same man from the supermarket incident but also her Boss like the person she is going to be a personal assistant to.
And she was about to confront him again without realizing it.
The next moment would set the stage for the collision of their worlds professional, personal, and… dangerously emotional.
