Chapter 80 - Chapter 79: The Trust Fall

It started with an assignment.

Not a normal assignment. A magical one. Professor Elmwood announced it with her usual calm smile.

"Today, we will practice the ultimate test of partnership. The Trust Fall."

Jay groaned. "You've got to be kidding."

"No jokes, Miss Mariano. This is serious magic. You will literally fall—from a height—and your partner must catch you. With magic. No hands. Just trust."

Keifer, sitting beside Jay, raised an eyebrow. "This should be interesting."

"You're not scared?"

"Of falling? No."

"Of catching me?"

He looked at her. Soft. Sure. "Never."

The setup was simple. A platform ten feet high. Students paired up. One stands on the platform. Falls backward. Partner catches them with a magical cushion below.

Simple. Terrifying.

Jay watched the first few pairs. Some succeeded. Some failed. One girl missed completely—her partner caught her physically instead of magically. Everyone laughed. They were fine.

But Jay's stomach was in knots.

"Hey." Keifer's hand found hers. "You okay?"

"I don't like falling."

"I know."

"I don't like not being in control."

"I know that too."

"What if I panic? What if my magic does something weird? What if—"

He pulled her close. "Jay. Listen to me. I will catch you. Every time. No matter what."

She looked at him. His steady eyes. His calm face. His absolute certainty.

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Their turn came.

Jay climbed the platform. Ten feet felt like a hundred. She looked down. Keifer stood below, arms ready, magic already glowing softly around him.

"Ready?" he called up.

"No."

"Too bad."

"KEIFER."

"Trust me, Jay. Just trust me."

She closed her eyes. Took a breath.

And fell.

For one terrifying second, there was nothing. Air. Space. Falling.

Then warmth. Magic. His magic. Catching her. Holding her. Lowering her gently into his arms.

She opened her eyes. He was smiling.

"Told you."

She kissed him. Right there. In front of everyone.

"I hate you," she whispered.

"No you don't."

"No. I don't."

The class applauded. Professor Elmwood nodded approvingly.

"Excellent, Miss Mariano. Mr. Watson. Perfect trust. Perfect catch."

Lyra was crying. "That was the most romantic thing I've ever seen."

Adrian was writing. "Trust fall success rate: 100% for Jayfer. Emotional impact: MAXIMUM."

Bella was sketching. "The moment he caught her. The way she looked at him. I need to frame this."

Mila smiled. "You two are ridiculous."

Daniel nodded. "Ridiculously perfect."

Later, in his office, Keifer held her.

"You really trusted me," he said quietly.

"I did."

"Even though you were scared."

"Especially because I was scared." She looked at him. "That's what trust is, right? Being scared and doing it anyway."

He kissed her forehead. "You're amazing."

"I know."

He laughed. "Humble too."

"Only with you."

The next morning, Lyra's whiteboard celebrated.

Jay read it. Smiled.

Keifer appeared beside her. Coffee in hand.

"Ready for normal?"

"Define normal."

"Classes. Meetings. Arguing about coffee. No more falling."

"Perfect."

They walked away together.

Normal. Perfect. THEIRS.
