Chapter 81 - Chapter 80: The First Fight

It happened on a Tuesday.

Not over coffee. Not over jealousy. Not over anything small.

It happened because Keifer made a decision. A big decision. About his future. About their future. And he didn't tell her first.

Jay found out from Lyra.

"Did you hear?" Lyra asked at breakfast, eyes wide. "Keifer got an offer. From the Magical Council. Something about leadership training. After graduation."

Jay's fork stopped halfway to her mouth.

"What?"

"You didn't know?"

"No." Her voice was flat. "I didn't know."

She found him in his office. Didn't knock. Just walked in.

"You got an offer."

Keifer looked up. His face changed. He knew.

"Jay, let me explain—"

"When were you going to tell me?"

"I was going to tell you tonight. I wanted to think about it first."

"Think about what? Whether to tell me? Whether to include me in your life?"

"That's not—"

"You made a decision about our future without even talking to me." Her voice cracked. "Without even asking what I want."

"Jay—"

"Did you even consider me? At all?"

He stood. Moved toward her. "Of course I considered you. Everything I do, I do for us."

"Then why didn't you SAY something?"

"Because I didn't want to worry you if it wasn't real."

"It IS real. It's happening. And I had to hear about it from LYRA."

The words hung in the air. Heavy. Accusing.

Keifer's jaw tightened. "What did you want me to do? Tell you every time I get an offer? Every time someone notices me?"

"YES. That's what couples do. They talk. They share. They don't hide things."

"I wasn't hiding—"

"You were. You are. And now I'm standing here wondering what else you haven't told me."

His face went still. The cold mask she hadn't seen in months.

"If that's how you feel—"

"Don't." Her voice broke. "Don't shut me out. Not now."

"You're the one who walked in here accusing me."

"Because you kept a secret."

"Because I was trying to protect you."

"I don't NEED protection. I need TRUST."

She walked out. Didn't look back.

Three days of silence.

The worst since the amnesia. Worse maybe, because this time, they were both choosing it.

Jay sat in her room. Staring at the ceiling. Mila sat with her, not talking. Just being there.

"He didn't tell me," Jay whispered.

"I know."

"He made a decision about our future without me."

"I know."

"I was so angry."

"I know that too."

"But now..." Jay swallowed. "Now I'm just sad."

Mila took her hand. "Then go talk to him."

Keifer sat in his office. Staring at the offer letter. Elias sat across from him.

"You're being stupid," Elias said.

"Thank you."

"Your girlfriend is upset because you didn't include her. So include her."

"It's complicated."

"It's not. You love her. She loves you. Everything else is noise."

Keifer looked at his brother. "When did you get so wise?"

"I always was. You were just too busy being Principal to notice."

The knock came at midnight.

Jay stood in his doorway. Eyes red. Tired.

Keifer stood up. "Jay."

"I'm not here to fight."

"Okay."

"I'm here to talk. Really talk. No yelling. No accusing. Just... talk."

He moved to her. Slow. Careful. "I'd like that."

They sat on his bed. Facing each other. Close enough to touch. Not touching.

"I'm sorry," Keifer said. "For not telling you. For making you find out from someone else. For shutting you out when you were scared."

Jay shook her head. "I'm sorry too. For yelling. For accusing. For walking away instead of staying to talk."

"I should have told you."

"I should have listened."

He took her hand. "I got the offer. From the Magical Council. Leadership training. After graduation. It's... it's what I've wanted for years. To make a difference. To help people. To be something more than my name."

Jay listened. Quiet.

"But when I got the letter, all I could think about was you. What it would mean for us. For our plans. For everything we're building." He squeezed her fingers. "I was scared, Jay. Scared you'd be upset. Scared you'd think I was choosing my future over ours."

"You ARE choosing our future. We both are." She looked at him. "Did you accept it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I wanted to talk to you first."

She kissed him. Soft. Tender. "Then let's talk."

They talked all night.

About the offer. About their futures. About what they wanted. Together. Separate. Everything.

In the morning, Keifer wrote a letter back to the Council. Not accepting. Not declining.

I need time to consider. My future is not just mine anymore.

Jay read it. Smiled.

"Good answer."

"I learned from the best."

Lyra's whiteboard had a new section.
