It started with a box.
Jay found it in Keifer's room. Under his bed. Hidden behind old books. A small wooden box with strange carvings.
She wasn't snooping. Really. She was looking for a pen. The box caught her eye.
When Keifer walked in, she was holding it.
His face went pale.
"Jay. Put that down."
"What is it?"
"Nothing. Just old things."
"Keifer. What's in the box?"
He was quiet for too long.
Her stomach dropped. "Keifer."
"Open it."
She did.
Inside were letters. Dozens of them. All addressed to someone named "Elias." All in Keifer's handwriting.
She read one.
Dear Elias,
I don't know if you'll ever read this. I don't know if you're even alive. But I need to write. I need to tell someone the truth. About Father. About what he did. About why I can't go back.
I'm scared, Elias. I'm scared I'll become him. I'm scared the coldness is in my blood. I'm scared I'll push everyone away like he did.
But then I met her. Jay. She's everything. Warm and loud and bright. She makes me want to be better. She makes me hope.
If you're out there... I hope you're okay. I hope you found someone who makes you hope too.
Your brother,
Keifer
Jay looked up. Tears streaming.
"Elias?"
Keifer sat on the bed. Head in his hands.
"My older brother. He disappeared when I was twelve. Ran away from home. I never saw him again."
"Keifer..."
"I write to him. Still. Every year on his birthday. I don't know if he's alive. I don't know if he'll ever read them. But I can't stop."
Jay sat beside him. Took his hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because it's shameful. My family. My past. The way we were. The way I was before you."
"You were never shameful."
"I was cold. Distant. I pushed everyone away."
"You were protecting yourself."
"I was becoming my father."
She cupped his face. Made him look at her.
"Look at me. You are NOT your father. You're kind. You're loving. You're the best person I know."
He shook his head. "You don't know—"
"I know YOU. That's all that matters."
That night, he told her everything.
His childhood. Cold house. Colder parents. Elias protecting him. Elias leaving. The loneliness after.
"I was alone for years," he said quietly. "Even surrounded by people. I was alone."
"Until?"
"Until you crashed into me in that hallway."
She smiled. "I didn't crash. I walked with purpose."
"You yelled at me."
"You deserved it."
"I did." He kissed her forehead. "You saved me, Jay. You don't even know."
"I think I do."
The next day, Jay made a decision.
She found the letters. All of them. Years of writing. Years of hoping.
"We're going to find him," she said.
Keifer stared. "What?"
"Elias. We're going to find your brother."
"It's been years. He could be anywhere. He could be—"
"Dead? Maybe. But also maybe not. And until we know, you'll keep writing letters to nowhere." She grabbed his hands. "Let me help you. Let us help you."
"Jay..."
"Together. Remember? Always together."
He pulled her close. Held her tight.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too. Now let's find your brother."
The search took weeks.
Adrian helped with records. Lyra with connections. Mila with patience. Daniel with quiet support. Bella with hope.
Finally, a lead. A town three hours away. A man matching Elias's description. Living quietly. Working as a teacher.
Keifer stared at the address. Shaking.
"Jay... what if he doesn't want to see me?"
"Then we leave. But at least you'll know."
"What if he's angry?"
"Then we deal with it together."
"What if—"
She kissed him. "Stop. We're doing this. Together."
They went on a Saturday.
Small town. Quiet street. Small house with a garden.
Keifer knocked. Jay held his hand.
The door opened.
A man stood there. Older. Softer. But the eyes were the same. Keifer's eyes.
"Keifer?" Elias whispered.
"Elias."
They stared at each other. Frozen.
Then Elias grabbed him. Pulled him into a hug so tight it looked painful.
Keifer broke. Cried in his brother's arms for the first time in years.
Jay watched. Tears streaming. Heart full.
They stayed all day.
Talked. Laughed. Cried some more.
Elias had been looking for Keifer too. Hadn't known where to find him. Hadn't known if he was okay.
"I have all your letters," Elias said quietly. "Someone forwarded them. I've read every one."
Keifer stared. "You got them?"
"Every year. I wanted to write back. Didn't know how. Didn't know if you'd want me to."
"I always wanted you to."
Elias smiled. "You found someone. Jay. She's amazing."
"I know."
"She saved you."
"She did."
"She's welcome in our family. Whatever family we have left."
Keifer looked at Jay. She was crying. Smiling.
"Best day ever," she whispered.
"Best day ever."
They visited every weekend after that.
Elias became part of their lives. Part of their friends. Part of everything.
At dinner, Lyra welcomed him with a hug. Adrian asked for stories. Bella sketched them together. Mila fed him. Daniel nodded approvingly.
"You have a brother," Lyra said to Keifer. "A WHOLE BROTHER. Why didn't you tell us?"
"I was scared."
"Of what?"
"Of losing him again. Of it being too good to be true."
"But it's true."
"Yeah." He looked at Jay. "It's true."
The next morning, Lyra's whiteboard had a new section.
