"What kind of nonsense are these newspapers printing? How can they slander my territory like this?!"
Deadpool threw a newspaper aside and complained to Chen Ye.
The headline read:
"The Largest Criminal Organization of the 21st Century: Hell's Kitchen"
"And that's not all," Pietro said worriedly while looking at Chen Ye. "Almost every newspaper today is talking about Hell's Kitchen."
Chen Ye picked up a paper and flipped through it. The headlines were everywhere:
"Shocking! The Infamous Boss of Hell's Kitchen Is Actually Him!""The Untold Story Between Playboy Stark and the Boss of Hell's Kitchen!""Government Approves Operation: Hell's Kitchen to Be Cleaned Up in Three Days, Social Cancer to Be Removed!"
...
Even Chen Ye was surprised by Nick Fury's methods and influence.
He had actually thought of using public opinion to eliminate Hell's Kitchen.
Chen Ye couldn't deny that Hell's Kitchen had once deserved such a reputation.
But after all his efforts, it was no longer the cesspool it used to be.
Seeing the expression on her boss's face, Aunt May knew what he was thinking.
She picked up the remote control and turned on the television, hoping to lighten the mood.
Unfortunately, the program that appeared was a reporter interviewing a federal congressman.
"May I ask why the federal government suddenly decided to eliminate Hell's Kitchen?" the reporter asked seriously.
The congressman on the screen wore a solemn expression.
"The government has always intended to do this. Our duty is to protect the safety of our citizens."
"Hell's Kitchen—both its people and the place itself—is filthy and criminal. It's like the city's sewer."
His words caused everyone's hearts to sink.
No one expected to be described as filthy and criminal.
The congressman continued:
"The existence of Hell's Kitchen brings shame and unease to other citizens."
"After extensive discussions and coordination, we have finally decided to eradicate this place of evil within this week."
"For the safety of the public, the military has already begun preparations and will completely cleanse Hell's Kitchen."
"Trust in the federal government. We will never coexist with crime."
Chen Ye's expression darkened to the point it seemed water could drip from it.
He could tolerate insults directed at himself.
But seeing innocent residents of Hell's Kitchen dragged into this made him furious.
Most of the people living there were trapped by poverty or a lack of legal status.
Many of them were innocent.
Yet from the government's attitude, it appeared they intended to attack all of Hell's Kitchen indiscriminately.
Even innocent people would not be spared.
That realization filled Chen Ye with anger and helplessness.
He couldn't simply stand by and watch.
Seeing his increasingly grim expression, Aunt May hurriedly switched channels.
Unfortunately, the next program was even worse.
A reporter was interviewing random pedestrians about their opinions of Hell's Kitchen.
The first interviewee was a little girl.
"Do you know what Hell's Kitchen is?" the reporter asked.
The girl immediately looked frightened.
"My mom says if I don't behave, she'll send me to Hell's Kitchen and let the monsters there eat me!"
Tears welled up in her eyes as she hugged her mother tightly.
"I've been good! I don't want to go to Hell's Kitchen!"
Next, the reporter stopped a young man riding a skateboard.
"Of course I know Hell's Kitchen," he said dismissively.
"It's where all the trash lives. I've heard every kind of crime happens there."
"A friend of mine went there once and never came back."
Finally, the reporter interviewed an elderly man.
His face was full of anger.
"Of course I know that place!"
"It's been there since I was born."
"It's filled with darkness and crime. Innocent people have suffered there for generations."
"I've never understood why the federal government allowed such a place to exist."
"Thank God they've finally decided to get rid of it!"
Listening to these comments, Chen Ye's mood grew even heavier.
He understood that, in many people's eyes, the residents of Hell's Kitchen were nothing more than trash, criminals, and parasites.
Yet many of them were innocent.
They simply happened to live in a place filled with crime and darkness.
Taking a deep breath, Chen Ye made up his mind.
He would fight for those innocent people.
He would not allow the government to attack Hell's Kitchen indiscriminately and hurt those who had done nothing wrong.
"Woohoo! Looks like we've officially become the villains in everyone's story, Chen Ye!"
Deadpool remained as carefree as ever, as if the people being insulted on television weren't talking about him.
Aunt May immediately tried to comfort Chen Ye.
"Mr. Chen Ye, don't take it to heart."
"The people saying those things have never actually been to Hell's Kitchen."
"We all know you're a good person."
"And Hell's Kitchen really has been getting better. It's nowhere near as terrible as they claim."
Pietro stood up as well.
His voice was firm.
"Don't worry. I'll always support you."
"Wherever you go, I'll go."
His eyes were filled with trust and determination.
Deadpool also rose to his feet.
"I volunteer to protect all the pretty girls in Hell's Kitchen!"
A playful grin appeared on his face, but there was genuine resolve behind it.
Chen Ye smiled.
"Don't worry. I'm not as fragile as you think."
"I know all of you support me."
"But the other residents of Hell's Kitchen may not feel the same way."
Across Hell's Kitchen, residents watched the news broadcasts and reacted in vastly different ways.
For those who simply wanted to live peacefully, Hell's Kitchen had never been a choice.
It was a necessity.
They weren't there because they wanted to be.
They were there because poverty had left them nowhere else to go.
Chen Ye's arrival had given them a glimmer of hope.
They believed life might finally improve under his leadership.
But now the government's intervention had plunged them back into despair.
They silently endured the pain, watching their fragile hopes extinguished by reality.
Others reacted with fury.
They smashed their televisions and cursed the irresponsible politicians and media outlets.
In their eyes, those people had no right to take away their ability to survive.
They decided to arm themselves and resist.
Their rage burned like wildfire, fueled by despair and helplessness.
Still others remained silent.
They sat before their televisions, staring blankly into the screen.
Lost in thought.
Confused.
Uncertain.
They had been born and raised here.
Hell's Kitchen was their home.
If they left, they would lose everything—their sense of belonging, their memories, their security.
And there were also those who blamed Chen Ye.
They believed it was his repeated confrontations and disturbances that had drawn the government's attention.
They believed he had offended powerful interests and brought disaster upon everyone.
To them, Chen Ye was the reason they now faced ruin.
They resented him.
They hated him.
They viewed him as the source of their suffering.
Yet the truth was very different.
Chen Ye's goal had always been to improve the lives of the residents.
He had banned drug trafficking.
He had banned human trafficking.
He had tried to protect the vulnerable.
But those actions had damaged the profits of powerful people.
And now those same interests were striking back.
The residents, however, didn't know the whole story.
They could only judge based on what they saw before them.
