Ema's
I sat through the rest of the class, keeping my eyes fixed forward. I spent every minute pretending that I hadn't just been trapped in a locked bathroom with two people who wanted me gone. I tried to focus on the teacher's words, but Peter's smile wouldn't leave my mind. It stayed there, bright and fake, like a mask hiding something sharp.
Lily's apology didn't feel like a real apology either. To me, it felt like a warning wrapped in politeness. It was as if she were telling me that she was sorry for what was coming next, not for what had already happened. The way they both looked at me made my skin crawl. They looked at me like I was unfinished business, a problem they still needed to solve.
