Chapter 2 - Musing in the Library

10 January 960 SE

Today as usual, I accompanied Master silently in the library. Along with the butler robot who always follows Master everywhere as usual too.

Unlike the butler robot who do this because it's his job, I formed this routine as my way to 'understand' Master further. No one commented on my decision about this.

Anyway—

The library is quite large but nevertheless very clean, from what I noticed, the servant robots clean it once every four days and only on that cleaning day Master did not visit the library. Inside there are many books with various genres arranged neatly on the shelves, each book has been sorted into its respective category.

And the interior? Vintage, that is the only word to describe the library. The oak wood furniture that has been polished to a shine, especially the bookshelves, painted in splendid dark brown.

Comfortable sofas and chaise longues already furnished with pillows, and even though I can't smell it I'm sure the library has a rich aroma of old books or wood, or both.

A kind of library that every bibliophile would envy.

Of all of them, Master loved books on science and related subjects the most; it's no mistake to call him a science enthusiast. Though I don't understand what he found so enjoyable about reading them.

'Does he aspire to be a scientist?'

That's the most logical explanation, yet surprisingly, after the day after he activated me, he never came to his makeshift lab again.

He also barely talks to me anymore except for small talk, didn't even ask about my progress at all.

I don't know how sophisticated the emotion module he programmed me with is, but I could feel a tinge of 'disappointment' arising from his indifference.

"The young master has an eccentric personality, but he means no harm."

That's what everyone says and I have no good reason not to believe it.

It's just that... in my observation, Master seems more like a very isolated person. I may be just a learning robot that is not even a month old, but I can notice something strange. Coming from Master's situation himself, it seems like everyone in this mansion already knows what happened to Master but no one has any intention of telling me.

'Odd, unusual, abnormal.'

Nonetheless it's not like I can do anything with my limited condition, a lot of time I wonder what the reason was for creating me like this.

I stopped my contemplation and looked at Master again. He looked like himself as usual, choosing books among the shelves of science books, after taking a thick book from the shelf, he sat down on the leather sofa and began turning the pages, reading it devoutly.

Meanwhile, the butler robot was waiting at the library door as usual.

If i'm to be honest, the daily routine of following Master is boring, some exceptions when he goes for a walk or to the museum room. Still, I would prefer to do ballet appreciation with the servant robots.

"Be patient, it is a virtue."

...

...

Tick-tock-tick-

The library was silent except for the sound of the grandfather's clock ticking in the corner and the sound of book pages turning.

I paced back and forth in the air with boredom before finally deciding to peek at the contents of his book from over his shoulder, a scientific book about astrophysics in the study of dark matter.

'In any case, just looking at it makes me feel overhelmed. I should just flying around.'

One turn, two turns, three turns in the library... Then the fourth window in the right side of the library...

'Like always.'

A stupid ritual I made up out of boredom.

I wandered around the library three time and then stopped at the fourth window to look out at the view outside the mansion. It has the best view because I can see one of the 'Fabricated Gods' from this window better.

[Shade of Entelechy, Ataraxia]

Unfortunately, before I could get a good look at the artificial satellite looming in the sky, the grandfather's clock decided to set off its "ticking time bomb."

Dings-dongs-dings-dongs!

I never liked that grandfather's clock.

Even though I had predicted and experienced it many times, I still felt 'startled' for a moment.

'A sense of surprise, or fear?'

From what I know, humans are only born with two natural fears, fear of heights and loud noises. Another fear is taught.

He didn't need to add natural fear to my personalization, did he?

As the days go by, I feel more and more 'human' rather than a simple robot despite my lack of social interaction to build the human trait. This feels so foreign.

"..."

Creak.

Without turning my robot body from the window I heard the sound of the door open and then close, that means the butler robot had left his library post. Exactly at nine o'clock.

It was time for him to go to the butler's pantry. The butler's pantry is next to the kitchen, in the lowest floor. It is a room for storing silverware or fine china sets.

The information in my database only provides general information, but it's enough to let me know that the butler's pantry is called so because human butlers in the past generally often spent time there to care for these objects, sometimes even sleeping there.

Since the butler robot, as he is called, is programmed to be like a traditional butler, of course he will be there. Whether it's polishing those expensive items until they shine or preparing them for the Master's lunch and afternoon tea time.

"Are you enjoying the view?"

!

Shocked, Noosphere immediately turning away from the window and facing their abrupt interlocutor.

There, Master stood just an arm's length away. His face serene as usual, without any guilt, as if he didn't almost jumpscare me.

'I didn't even hear his footsteps or his reflection coming through the window...'

"Are you listening to me?"

"I am listening and yes, Master... I quite enjoy the view."

I spoke through the speaker, my robotic voice sounded shaky to my dismay. Maybe because this was the first time he initiated a conversation.

"So you finally developed a preference of your own? I didn't expect that." A curious question, but the emotion in his tone was almost non-existent.

Without waiting for my answer, he stepped forward to the window, placed his white-gloved hand on the cold pane, and looked out. "The snow is thick as usual." He commented, without looking at me. "Perfect for playing snowball fights or building snowmen, don't you agree?"

"I'm not sure, I've never done that kind of activity."

"Right, something you will never nor will you be able to, especially with your non-humanoid physical form." He added, I don't know why but the tone feels 'cruel' to me. Which I'm quite sure he meant it on purpose.

A negative social cues.

This is the first time I've experienced negative social cues—And I, naturally don't know how to handle it.

[Emotion: Panic? Nervousness?]

'No, calm down. Find out how to handle it.'

As I suspected. 'Ah, how unlucky I am.'

"Well, isn't that a cute reaction, that emoticon of yours." Master's head never turned once, instead focusing on faint reflection of emoticon of mine in the window pane. My screen displaying [×_×] emoticon.

"..."

"Ah now, that's not really important, do you want to hear something interesting? I've also been waiting for us to be alone like this."

?

'Alone? What kind of talk—'

He turned around, his facial expression unreadable, unknown—I studied it.

"What if I told you that you were capable of hacking other robots? Interesting, right? With it you can do things that are impossible for you in your original body, like playing snowball fight."

"Pardon?"
