Chapter 14 - The Farewell

King Julian had finally regained consciousness. When Crown Prince Liam questioned him about his secret mission in the forest, the King remained silent, his eyes harboring a darkness he wasn't yet ready to share. A few days later, as his strength returned, he summoned Prince Cable to his private chambers.

A grave expression was etched on the King's face. "Cable, son, I've called you here to discuss the investigation in Ravenwood Forest. Our scouts have uncovered disturbing evidence: eerie symbols, mutilated animals, and vanished villagers."

King Julian's voice lowered to a chilling whisper: "I fear this darkness is orchestrated by forces beyond mortal control... I suspect all this is the work of vampires."

Cable's eyes widened in shock: "Father, do vampires... really exist?"

King Julian nodded solemnly, as if sharing a death sentence. "A long time ago, our lands were cursed by these creatures—beasts that feasted on mortal blood. Our ancestor, King Malcolm, launched a perilous crusade and drove them out after unbearable losses. After centuries of silence, they have returned."

The King looked intensely at his son. "I want YOU to command a covert group of our finest soldiers. Your mission is twofold: travel to the realm of Tenebria to gather intelligence on their strengths and weaknesses, and find out if their rulers know of this resurgence."

King Julian handed Cable a worn leather pouch containing ancient relics: a vial of holy water, a cross-shaped dagger, garlic powder, and a silver knife. Pointing to the silver blade, the King warned,

"This is the most crucial item, Cable. Legend says vampires can only be killed by piercing their heart with silver. Any other wound will merely weaken them."

Cable felt a surge of determination. He tucked the pouch into his belt and nodded resolutely. "I'll depart for Tenebria immediately, Father. Our kingdom's survival is my top priority."

The King embraced him firmly. "Be cautious—vampires are masters of deception and death." Cable bowed and exited the chambers, the weight of the silver blade heavy against his side.

The echo of Cable's footsteps filled the palace corridors; his travel bags were already packed and ready. He stopped before Sofia's quarters and gave a soft, hesitant knock. Sofia opened the door, her expression curious yet welcoming.

"Prince Cable, what brings you here at this hour?"

Cable smiled warmly, though his eyes held a trace of sadness. "Sofia, I needed to speak with you before my departure. I have some urgent business to attend to... in Tenebria."

Sofia's brow furrowed with immediate concern. "Tenebria? That is a long journey. How long will you be away, Prince?"

Cable hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "To be honest, Sofia, it might be some time. Possibly weeks... or even months."

Sofia's voice dropped to a worried whisper. "Is everything truly alright? You seem troubled, as if there is more you aren't saying."

Cable reached out, offering a reassuring smile. "Everything is fine, Sofia. Just routine royal business—strengthening diplomatic ties and trade agreements as Father requested."

Sofia nodded slowly, though her heart felt heavy. "I will miss our conversations in the palace gardens, Prince Cable. You always made me feel like I belonged here."

Cable's heart swelled at her admission. "The feeling is mutual, Sofia. You've become my life." At his words, Sofia's cheeks flushed a deep, radiant red. "I'll return before you know it, and we will stroll through those gardens once more."

He bowed his head slightly and turned to leave. As he walked away, Sofia called out softly, "Safe travels, Prince Cable..."

Cable looked back one last time, their eyes locking in a brief, meaningful connection—a silent promise of return—before he disappeared down the corridor.

Meanwhile...

King Julian stood silhouetted against a palace window, watching his son depart. His expression was heavy with the weight of the secrets he kept even from those closest to him. His eyes narrowed as a dark thought crossed his mind: "Will my son return safely from Tenebria... or will the darkness waiting there consume him entirely?"

As Cable mounted his horse and led his escort through the palace gates, his figure slowly vanished into the horizon.
