Chapter 20 - Sweet Moments Together

Morning sunlight streamed through the palace windows, casting a warm glow over Sofia's face as she woke up. She smiled softly, feeling grateful for another day with the love of her life. Sofia spent her day reviewing petitions from Eldrida's citizens, her compassion and wisdom earning their admiration.

Meanwhile, Cable met with his council to discuss trade agreements and military strategies, his strong leadership inspiring confidence. As daylight faded into sunset, Sofia closed her documents, eager to reunite with Cable. He awaited her in the palace gardens, surrounded by softly glowing lanterns and sweetly scented blooms.

Sofia's heart fluttered as Cable took her hand, pulling her close. "Our days are busy, but our nights are forever ours," he whispered, his eyes burning with love. Their lips met in a gentle kiss as stars began twinkling above, witnessing the love that shone brightly between Sofia and Cable.

A quiet night walk along the palace walls beckoned to the royal couple. Hand in hand, they strolled along the ancient stone battlements, the soft breeze carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers from the gardens below. Cable stopped at a spot where the wall overlooked the sleeping city of Eldrida, its lights twinkling like embers.

"Sofia, from this view, our kingdom seems perfect," Cable said softly, turning to her. "But with you by my side, every moment feels perfect." Sofia's heart swelled with love as she leaned into him. "You make our kingdom – and my world – complete, Cable," she whispered back.

In this peaceful moment, nothing else existed – only their love and the night breeze. Suddenly, Cable's expression changed from romantic to playful. "Sofia, I'm starving!" he exclaimed, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

Sofia laughed. "Midnight hunger attack, Your Highness?"

Cable nodded vigorously. "Guilty as charged. Want to help me raid the kitchen?"

Sofia's laughter echoed through the night air as she took his hand. "I'll do better – I'll help you bake something sweet."

Together, they sneaked into the palace kitchen, turning on only minimal lights to maintain the cozy atmosphere. The kitchen transformed into their private playground as they tied on matching aprons, looking adorable.

"What shall we create, my royal baking partner?" Sofia asked, eyes sparkling.

"Chocolate pastries – my weakness!" Cable replied, already cracking eggs into a bowl.

As they worked side by side, flour dusted their hands, and laughter filled the air. Cable's attempts to knead the dough ended with a cloud of flour exploding around him. Sofia burst into giggles at the sight of Cable covered in white powder, looking like a ghostly royal baker. She gently brushed off the flour from his nose and cheeks with her fingers, her touch sparking warm smiles between them.

"There, Your Highness is restored," Sofia teased, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

Cable chuckled, his voice low and happy. "Thanks to my royal cleaner – you're a miracle worker with flour and my heart."

Finally, the pastries were ready – golden brown, fluffy, and emitting irresistible aromas. They stepped back to admire their midnight baking masterpiece.

"Royally delicious!" Cable declared, his eyes twinkling with pride.

Sofia laughed and nodded in agreement. "I think we make a perfect baking team, Your Highness."

They sat down at a small kitchen table, enjoying the warm treats and effortless conversation. The soft glow of kitchen candles cast a cozy ambiance around them, making the moment feel intimate and special. At one point, Sofia reached out and gently brushed crumbs off Cable's sleeve, her touch sparking affectionate feelings. Cable covered her hand with his, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"I love these quiet moments with you," Cable whispered.

Sofia's heart felt full as she smiled up at him. "I love them too."

In another wing of the palace, Prince Rayan stood alone on his balcony. He still held the velvet box in his hand. Tomorrow, he was to return to his hometown, and his heart felt unusually heavy.

He spotted Emily walking alone in the gardens below. He went down and joined her, walking in comfortable silence for a while.

"I am returning home tomorrow, Emily," Rayan said quietly.

Emily paused, an unexpected flicker of sadness crossing her brown eyes. "So soon, Rayan?"

Rayan smiled—a smile that carried both pain and devotion. "Perhaps to give you the 'time' you asked for. I don't want my presence to feel like a burden to you."

Emily looked at him, touched. She had never known a prince so willing to put her comfort above his own desires. Rayan reached out and placed a single lily in her hand. "I am leaving, but my heart stays here. If you ever find that you can look at me the way I look at you... just send word. No matter where I am in the world, I will come back to you."

His selfless promise shook the very foundations of Emily's heart. She didn't say it, but for the first time, the thought of his departure felt like a sharp ache in her chest. Was it possible that she was beginning to fear losing him?
