May 11th
Egba Family Home.
The early morning sunlight passed through the gaps in the curtains and landed on the face of a boy highlighting his handsome childish features and making his dark-skin glow a bit.
*Yawn!*
The boy, maybe slightly disturbed by the warm light, turned to his side and cuddled his pillow.
The door opened and a woman walked in.
She was a beautiful woman with lovely fair-skin and a currently disappointed/helpless look in her golden brown eyes as she looked at her son laying there lazily.
She wore a black up and down pajamas with white spots on it.
She placed her hands on her his and with a position as old as time itself, just stared at her son.
Maybe it was due to survival instincts or a holy intervention, whatever you might want to call it, the boy as if sensing something was off stirred once more.
And simply turned around again.
The woman's eye twitched.
Just as she was about to say something,he turned around once more and this time opened his eyes.
First blink, confusion and disorientation.
Second blink, prayer that this was part of the dream.
Third blink, acceptance and fear.
"So you finally decided to wake up bah?" He mother, Chioma said looking at him.
"Mu-mummy good morning." He said standing up fast.
His heart was beating fast.
'Was she calling me earlier? Did I forget to do something? Heavenly Father in heaven please save me just this once!'
His mind was already in overdrive, thinking of countless possibilities that would warrant this great honour.
"Morning nwam. Do you know what you did wrong?" She said, not a single smile on her face.
'Finally! The moment of truth! What should I say? What do I do?' His body fidgeted as his mind spun continuously burning brain cells constantly.
Till he sighed inwardly and settled on one universal answer.
"Mummy I'm sorry."
A pause.
Then his mother actually began smiling.
"It's good that you know when to apologize, now go and fresh up so we won't be late for your friend's birthday party." She finally said before turning around and closing the door behind her.
Kelechi exhaled loudly and slumped on his bed, both mentally and physically exhausted.
He actually forgot about the birthday party that was meant to be today.
Emeka, one of his classmates and friends invited him to his home to celebrate his birthday. And he actually forgot.
He felt ashamed of himself.
After a few minutes he quickly pulled himself together and went out of he room, heading straight for the bathroom.
When he entered no one was in.
The bathroom was a combination of both the toilet and the bathroom along with a fairly big passage where the sink was with a big mirror hanging just above it.
He didn't waste any time. He quickly located his toothbrush and picked a small stool by the corner of the passage and placed it in front of the sink.
A climb up.
A quick but moderate application of the toothpaste and he was ready and moving.
A few minutes later he was done.
Quietly placing the small stool back as well as his toothbrush after washing it,he then left the bathroom.
Breakfast, was as usual a very delicious affair.
Today was fried yam and egg sauce with juice on the side-milk for Kelechi.
He didn't argue, eating is a blessing on it's own.
"Daddy good morning." He said to his father as he approached the table filled with good food.
He simply beamed at his mom with pure love and admiration in his eyes.
And a quick side glance at his dad who was quietly eating, dressed in matching pajamas with his mother.
After the meal,it was his father that packed the dishes this time to wash as they were trying to set a good example for their son.
"Kelechi come with me and take your bath."
He quietly nodded and followed his mom.
5-10 minutes later they were done with his mom escorting him to his room and then leaving to get clothes for him.
After some minutes she came back and gave him the clothes with he put on with her supervising.
This was what she had started doing since the ending of last year and he was already getting used to it.
Some time later he and his mom left for the birthday party without his dad-due to certain business things to handle as it was a Thursday.
His mother dropped him off at Emeka's house with a quickly bought present which was in a small gift bag.
The boy's mother was waiting outside,a slightly chubby middle-aged woman with dark-skin and a warm smile.
The two mothers exchanged greetings and Kelechi greeted her politely.
After Kelechi's mother took him inside following Ngozi the boy's mother, she spoke once more with the woman and with a few more instructions to Kelechi, said her goodbyes and left.
Some of the children were already there and Kelechi happily mingled with them, playing all kinds of games.
He gave Emeka,a slightly chubby far -skinned boy with average looks and a warm smile the present he brought for him,it turned out to be a small box of cookies.
Emeka loved it.
The birthday party was amazing, the games were interesting and even the cake was delicious.
The party lasted till six in the evening with the children enjoying themselves very much.
It was a school public holiday. The very best day ever.
He almost didn't want to go until he saw his mother's car from outside one of the windows of the house.
The women greeted each other once more, even talking for a bit before she called him for them to leave.
He waved Emeka and some of his friends along with Mrs Ngozi goodbye before entering his mother's car.
And some more as they left.
'Best day ever!' He thought to himself with a content sigh before closing his eyes.
