Those men had grown completely silent.
Yet Nate was not among them.
"He's not here," Mark's voice chimed in from beside her.
Suzy didn't reply immediately, her eyes continuing to scan their surroundings, her fingers locked tight around her firearm.
Then, she heard a voice.
"I'm right here."
The voice drifted over from not far behind them, laced with playful amusement.
Suzy turned around to see Nate standing by the roadside, a smirk resting on the corner of his lips.
"Pretty swift work," Nate noted. His voice wasn't loud, yet it rang out exceptionally clear across the open road. "You two were a bit faster than I anticipated."
"You hid pretty fast yourself," Suzy said, her eyes narrowing.
Nate paid no mind to the sarcasm in her words, simply shrugging his shoulders.
At that exact moment, a deafening bang shattered the air.
Mark, who had been standing silently by her side, had already pulled the trigger.
