Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Cracks in the Armor

The lanterns of Lumeria flickered against the night sky, casting golden reflections on the cobblestone streets. Cancer walked slowly, her basket of herbs tucked against her hip. She had spent the day tending to neighbors—healing wounds, comforting children, listening to stories of grief. Yet her thoughts kept drifting back to Scorpio.

He was a mystery she could not ignore. His silence was heavy, his gaze piercing, but beneath it all she sensed a man carrying scars too deep for most to see.

That evening, she found him sitting alone by the fountain in the town square. The water shimmered under the moonlight, and Scorpio's reflection looked fractured, as if the ripples mirrored the turmoil inside him.

Cancer approached quietly. "You always sit alone."

Scorpio didn't look up. "It's easier that way."

"Easier," Cancer repeated softly, "but not better."

Scorpio's lips curved into a bitter smile. "Better for me. People don't understand. They see the sting, not the loyalty. The shadows, not the fire."

Cancer sat beside him, her voice gentle. "Then let me understand. Show me the scars you hide."

For a long moment, Scorpio said nothing. Then, slowly, he spoke. "I trusted once. I gave everything. And they betrayed me. Left me bleeding, alone. Since then, I've built walls. It's the only way I know to survive."

Cancer's heart ached. She reached out, her fingers brushing his hand. "Walls keep pain out, but they also keep love out."

Scorpio's eyes flickered, torn between fear and longing.

From across the square, Sagittarius strummed his guitar, his voice carrying through the night. "Love isn't shelter, it's adventure!" he called playfully. "Cancer, you're too cautious. Scorpio, you're too guarded. You'll never find joy if you keep hiding."

Scorpio scowled. "Not everyone wants reckless joy, Sagittarius."

Sagittarius laughed. "Then you'll drown in your own shadows."

Before Cancer could reply, Aquarius stepped forward, his eyes thoughtful. "Sagittarius is right in one way. Balance isn't belief—it's choice. Scorpio, you've already chosen her. Why fight it?"

Scorpio's jaw tightened. "Because choosing means risking. And risk means pain."

Cancer squeezed his hand. "And pain means healing. Healing means love."

For the first time, Scorpio laughed—a rare, unguarded sound that startled even himself. Cancer's heart swelled. She realized she was no longer just comforting him; she was falling.

Scorpio looked at her, his voice softer than she had ever heard. "You make me want to believe again. And that terrifies me."

Cancer smiled, tears shimmering in her eyes. "Then let's be terrified together."

The fountain rippled, the stars above shimmering brighter, as if the universe itself acknowledged the first crack in Scorpio's armor.
