Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Trials of the Zodiac

The days after the midsummer festival were not peaceful. Whispers spread through Lumeria—whispers of Cancer and Scorpio's bond. Some admired it, others doubted it, and still others sought to test it. The Zodiacs, each embodying their nature, began to challenge the fragile love that had just taken root.

It began with Leo, radiant as the sun, striding into the marketplace where Cancer sold herbs. His voice carried like a trumpet.

"Cancer," Leo declared, "you give your heart too freely. Scorpio's shadows will consume you. You deserve someone who shines, not someone who hides."

Cancer held her basket tighter. "Leo, you misunderstand him. His shadows are not chains—they are scars. And scars deserve love too."

Scorpio, overhearing, stepped forward, his tone sharp. "I don't need your approval, Leo."

Leo smirked, his golden eyes gleaming. "Then prove it. Stand in the light, not just the dark. Show her you can be more than a shadow."

Cancer placed a hand on Scorpio's arm, calming him. "He doesn't need to prove anything. Love isn't a performance."

But Leo's words lingered, planting doubt in Scorpio's mind. Could he ever truly stand in the light beside her?

Later, by the shore, Pisces spoke softly to Cancer as the waves lapped at their feet.

"You heal everyone, Cancer. But who heals you? Scorpio is fire—he burns. I could be water, flowing, soothing. You wouldn't have to fight."

Cancer's heart ached at the kindness in Pisces' voice. "Pisces, you are a friend. But love isn't about ease. It's about truth. And Scorpio's truth calls to me."

When Scorpio learned of Pisces' words, jealousy flared sharp as a sting. "Do you want someone softer?" he asked bitterly.

Cancer shook her head, tears in her eyes. "I want someone real. And you, Scorpio, are the most real soul I've ever known."

Virgo, ever practical, cornered Cancer one evening.

"You're too trusting," Virgo warned. "Scorpio's passion is dangerous. He'll hurt you, even if he doesn't mean to."

Cancer sighed. "Virgo, I know the risks. But love without risk isn't love at all."

Virgo frowned. "Then at least guard your heart. Don't give it all away."

Scorpio overheard, his chest tightening. He wanted to promise he would never hurt her—but he knew his intensity sometimes cut too deep.

Aries, fiery and restless, challenged Scorpio directly in the town square.

"You think you're strong? Fight me. Show Cancer you can protect her."

Scorpio's eyes narrowed. "Love isn't proven in battle."

Aries laughed. "Then maybe you're afraid."

Cancer stepped between them, her voice firm. "Enough! Scorpio doesn't need to fight to prove his love. His strength is in his loyalty, not his fists."

Aries grinned, backing down. "Fair enough. But remember, Cancer—fire tests steel. If he can't endure, he'll break."

That night, Cancer and Scorpio sat together under the stars, shaken by the trials.

Scorpio spoke first, his voice low. "They all doubt me. Maybe they're right. Maybe I'll hurt you."

Cancer turned to him, her eyes shimmering. "Scorpio, love isn't about being perfect. It's about choosing each other, again and again, even when the world doubts us."

He looked at her, the storm in his chest finally quieting. "Then I choose you. Every day, every night, against every doubt."

Cancer smiled, tears falling freely. "And I choose you. Even in your shadows, I see light."

Above them, the constellations seemed to shift, as if the universe itself acknowledged their vow. The other Zodiacs had tested them, but instead of breaking, their bond had grown stronger—tempered like steel in fire, softened like tides against stone.
