Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - Countdown to U.A. (Final)

Letting his leg bounce, Jun was seated in a lobby. His surroundings reminded him of something between a hospital corridor and an office space.

His mother sat next to him, checking her phone. "Your appointment was 10 minutes ago, and they haven't told us anything."

Jun glanced towards the reception desk where the employee was typing away. "I'm sure the Public Safety Commission doesn't get many quirk update appointments."

Setting the phone face down, his mother huffed. "But they could at least be quick about it."

A door opened revealing a man in a suit as he checked a tablet. "Junya Mori?"

Jun stood supporting his mother as she got up and swatted his arm. "I'm not that old!"

Jun scratched his cheek, a slightly forced smile on his face. "Sorry, I'm nervous."

Mom patted his shoulder. "It's just a meeting. We'll be out of here in 20 minutes, tops."

She turned away from Jun, walking over to the man who was waiting. "Finally, now let's get this done."

Jun followed his mother, nodding to the man.

The man looked at the tablet then at his mother, before looking up at Jun. "Well… follow me to your case officer."

He turned, expecting them to follow.

Mom huffed and followed with Jun right behind her.

They were led past several desks. Jun was able to see a man standing over another worker. "I needed both files yesterday, why did I only get one?!"

The worker at the desk fumbled over his words. "B-but the email-"

"I don't care about the email!" was the last thing Jun heard before the door closed.

Taking a seat, his mother and Jun waited for the man seated at the desk to speak. The employee that had guided them was left outside.

The man cleared his throat but didn't look away from his computer. "Junya Mori? And I presume one of his guardians?"

Mom gave a polite smile. "That's correct. I'm his mother."

By the time the man looked away from his computer, his expression was neutral, most likely just running through the steps. "You made an appointment to update his quirk from the previous 'Empath'. Most legal quirk changes don't require filing with the PSC."

His mom kept her smile. "When we told his doctor, the change we described was a total classification change, so we were told to make an appointment here. You should have the notes there in his file."

Jun kept quiet, letting his mom take charge. Adult vs Adult.

The man let out a breath through his nose as he looked back to his computer, clicking away.

After nearly a minute, the man's expression changed to confusion. "Is this true?"

Mom's smile widened. "Sorry, what was that?"

He finally leaned back from the screen. "Perfect Duplicate?"

Jun nodded lightly. "That's right, so I need to show it off?"

The man let out a sigh. "No, you don't. Just describe your quirk so I can update your file."

Jun cleared his throat, letting his voice carry. "Quirk: Perfect Duplicate. I am able to create a single perfect copy of myself. The copy has the same durability and intelligence as me."

The man kept his eyes on Jun, letting out a larger sigh. "Present Mic fan?"

Jun only smiled.

Clicking again, the man turned to his computer. "Well, I just need to run through questions and clarifications. Then the process will be quick, your quirk will be officially changed."

After that, the visit was quick just like the man said. The questions Jun was asked were mostly boring ones like "Was one duplicate his limit?" Or "Does the duplicate come with the equipment you have on you?"

They were answered honestly enough, Jun kept to his cover that only one duplicate was available.

When Jun and his mother left the building, she patted his shoulder. "Good job, now let's go get dinner."

Jun laughed. "Nothing like paperwork to build an appetite."

A few days later, Jun sat at the kitchen table at home looking at the U.A application on his phone.

Strict Requirements to get in? Then how did Deku get past this? Allmight?

Jun paused mid-scroll.

Definitely Allmight. He opened the door but it was up to Deku to walk in.

Shaking his head, he started filling out the application. Making sure to use his new quirk details along with his basic information.

At the bottom of the Hero Course application, there was a prompt box that asked the hardest question. "Why do you want to be a hero?"

I know why I want to be a hero, but that doesn't translate well into actual words I can use.

He typed, then deleted, typed again, deleted again.

He stared at the taunting prompt box.

It doesn't have to be that deep. The gravity girl literally said she was in it for the money.

He picked up his phone and typed.

"I want to be a hero because I have the capacity to help people, ignoring that capacity is the same as not helping."

He hit confirm before he could second-guess himself.

I can't believe I just ripped off Spider-Man. He would be proud.

Jun chuckled as he set his phone aside, focusing on the girl sleeping in the chair to his left.

He poked her cheek. "Bloodbug wake up"

She made a cute noise as she stretched, waking up. "Huh? Are you done?"

Jun nodded. "And you?"

She yawned, clearing her eyes. "Yeah, since today was a rest day I got it done early this morning."

"That's good. Means we're practically halfway there already."

She shot him an annoyed look. "Says the boy who spent the last few years preparing for it."

Jun could only smirk at that. "Means I'm committed. Or dedicated. Pick your compliments~"

She huffed, swatting at him. "Are compliments all in your mind?"

Jun laughed. "Truthful compliments are the best kind."

The weeks passed by quickly as Jun lost himself in the grind of preparing for U.A's entrance exam.

Training with his clones, merging their individual training knowledge into him. Then pairing that with his strict physical training, he felt the mental and physical stress building day by day.

So he slowed his physical training to mentor Toga. Her pace was more important because she was sprinting to catch up.

When the letters arrived telling Jun and Toga the date of the entrance exam, their determination finally had a timeline.

Jun looked at his bank account, his plans outside of U.A needed funding, especially if he was going to use his extra clones frequently.

So he decided to spend one more night at the den.

A surprising sight was waiting for him there. The man who was pressuring his employee at the PSC, was at a table obviously stressed as he lost hand after hand.

Jun filed that one away. A losing PSC official in a manager position? Who knew when this could be useful.

By the end of the night, Jun walked out of the den with 2 million yen after being 'gently' reminded by the staff to tip the employees.

When he arrived home, everyone was asleep, one of his clones had cleanly replaced him for the night. No one the wiser.

After waking the clone and hiding the cash with his help, they merged, letting Jun see what he missed that evening.

Laying down after the memory dump, he just sighed.

"Finally, after nearly 7 years. U.A is around the corner."
