Shinku said, "Alright here is the plan. We are going to just go straight in and kill as many Kumo fighters out there."
The order was simple and direct, yet it surprised Shunsui. He had spent the last few days thinking of games that could turn the entire tide of a large battle in their favour, games that could trap dozens of enemies at once or change the situation of the battlefield to their advantage.
Instead the command was to charge forward like any other unit and rely on ordinary killing.
Shinku noticed the look on the his face and explained , "You would not use anything special. Keep what you have been doing. We want Kumo to take notice of you, identify who you are and then send some of their best to kill you."
Shunsui's mind was filled with a mixture of disbelief at that. 'That's so stupid. I announce myself without doing anything extraordinary and then I wait for them to specifically target me and kill me? What kind of plan is that?'
'Hello everyone, look at the boy with the swords that allow him to change reality, please send your strongest people to murder me. I promise I will stand still and won't use any of my strong games. Maybe I should hold up a sign that says "Free Genius, Please Attack." At least then the Cloud ninja would not have to waste time searching for me.'
Shinku continued the briefing without smiling. "When they send squads after you, You would then be allowed to use some of your impressive games to get rid of them. In other words, We will be baiting them to send some of their strong men after you. And the higher ups are hoping that you have something with you to help not only you but us to survive too."
The jonin leader's voice made it clear that he himself was not completely happy with the plan, yet orders from above left little room for argument.
Shunsui listened and felt a familiar suspicion rise inside him. 'Why do I think that Danzo was the one to suggest this strategy? He probably wants me cornered so that I can show him some of the best games that I can use.'
The idea fitted the Root leader's way of thinking far too well. Shinku looked directly at him and asked the most important question. "When they send their special squad, you would have to use some game to keep us safe. Would you be able to do it?"
Shunsui met the older man's eyes and answered with quiet confidence. "Don't worry Shinku san. I think I got this."
Shunsui moved toward the battlefield with the rest of the Shadow Platoon close around him. The ground that stretched between the two armies was nothing like what he had seen before.
Everywhere he looked shinobi from both villages were locked in desperate combat. Pairs and small groups fought with blades, fists and ninjutsu while the earth itself shook under the force of large scale techniques.
Bodies already littered the torn soil and the air carried the smell of blood and rotting dead bodies.
Iryō-nin m from both sides darted between the fighting, dragging the wounded toward safer ground. The sky above the battlefield stayed grey with smoke from continuous explosions.
No single duel lasted long before another fighter joined or a stray jutsu ended the struggle without warning.
Shunsui saw a giant toad from the Leaf side smashed through a line of Kumo shinobi only to be pierced by dozens of specialised spears before disappearing in a burst of smoke.
Shunsui felt a little bit of fear inside him. This was the true face of the war the higher ups had decided to throw him into. There was no plan or ambush here. There was only the constant press of enemies and the need to keep moving if he wanted to stay alive.
One of the Yamanaka members of the platoon suddenly raised a hand after receiving a mental message and command, "We have been asked to reinforce platoon thirty one, seventy five and forty three on the east side. They are being pressed back."
Shinku nodded once and the entire Shadow Platoon changed direction at once, moving at full speed toward the east. The sound of fighting grew clearer with every second.
Shunsui immediately flash stepped forward the moment they reached the struggling Leaf platoons. His body blurred and reappeared behind a Cloud chunin who had been pressing hard against a wounded Leaf fighter.
One clean slash of his chakra coated sword cut the enemy's neck before the man could turn. At the same time Shunsui activated Kageoni so that members of the Shadow Platoon inside the thirty metre range who become a participant of the game can use the ability to move through shadows and control them.
Shunsui himself covered both of his swords with a thick layer of chakra until the blades glowed with a bright blue light. They became this world's equivalent of light sabers.
The glowing edges sliced through standard Cloud armour as if the metal plates were no thicker than cloth. Each flash step carried him from one target to the next so quickly that many enemies only realised he had been there after they were already falling.
A group of three Cloud chunin tried to surround him with coordinated attacks. Shunsui slipped sideways to dodge a sword with another flash step, let the first attack pass through empty air, and answered with a rising cut that took the nearest man's arm at the elbow.
The second attacker received a horizontal slash across the chest before he could recover his stance. The third managed to block one glowing blade only to find the second blade already sliding under his guard and into his side.
Shunsui pulled the swords free and moved on without looking back at the results.
More Kumo shinobi noticed him specifically his glowing swords that looked like the Samurai's chakra coating technique as well as his speed. He was not using body flicker to move and thus he could maintain a very high level of speed in the battle without any hand signs and could freely change directions.
They began to shout warnings and to focus their attacks on him.
One experienced Cloud special jonin finally managed to hold him in place. The man was skilled enough to predict the flash steps and to force Shunsui into a blade lock.
The man was a much better and experienced fighter than him. But Shunsui had other tricks in his bag.
Shunsui felt the strength behind the enemy's sword and knew a prolonged contest of power would not favour him.
He infused chakra into his throat and voice and activated the first of the new Kurama techniques he had learned.
'Genjutsu: Thousand Voices'
A few words left his lips in a soft and almost lazy tone. "Yare yare, you are a troublesome foe."
The single sentence split inside the man's mind into hundreds of overlapping voices that seemed to come from every direction at once.
Different pitches and volumes crashed together. He clutched his head in sudden pain as the headache bloomed behind his eyes and refused to fade.
Before he could gather enough chakra to break the illusion or even open his eyes properly, Shunsui had already stepped into the man's own shadow through Kageoni.
The glowing blade rose from the darkness and cut cleanly across the jonin's neck. The body fell forward and the short contest ended. Shunsui stood over the fallen enemy for only a moment before he turned toward the next group of Cloud shinobi still pressing the Leaf lines.
