As Shunsui continued to fight the Kumo shinobi, the others of the Shadow Platoon who had become participants of his Kageoni game took full advantage of the game.
The sudden assault by the new platoon created openings that the three struggling Konoha platoons desperately needed.
Everyone fought with everything they had to help those three units and slowly the combined effort managed to regain some of the ground that had been lost earlier in the day.
But in a frontline battlefield there was no true rest. Enemies kept pouring forward even when they were cut down by the dozens and the same relentless pressure continued.
Fresh Kumo squads arrived from deeper in their lines the moment any space opened. The noise of clashing metal and exploding ninjutsu never faded for more than a few seconds.
And in such a high scale battle where weapons and jutsus were being thrown every single moment there was bound to be deaths on both sides.
Leaf and Cloud shinobi fell with equal frequency and the ground grew thicker with the still forms of those who would not rise again.
Shunsui grew deeply frustrated as he watched a person from the Shadow Platoon get killed in a brutal fashion only a short distance away.
He could see the pain twisting the man's face in the final moments. He could see the terrified look in the dying eyes that clearly worried about what would happen to the family left behind without him.
The sight burned into Shunsui's mind and turned the usual lazy calm of his expression into something harder and colder. "Fuck you Danzo. Fuck these orders." Shunsui mumbled the words under his breath while he cut down another Cloud chunin who had come too close.
The anger at the higher ups who treated lives like pieces on a board finally pushed him past the limits of the original plan.
He gave a clear signal to the nearest Yamanaka and ordered a full mental connection to every person in the local force. "I am going to do something special. Contact the Yamanakas of the other platoons and create a network for them to hear what to do."
The Yamanaka member immediately began linking minds across the three reinforced platoons and the Shadow Platoon itself. Within moments a wide web of silent communication spread through the Leaf fighters in the eastern sector.
Shinku's voice sounded inside Shunsui's head with clear concern. 'Shunsui our orders are not to use anything new and just hold the line.'
Shunsui answered, 'Those are your orders Shinku san. No one said those orders to me. As far as I remember Shikaku san gave me the full liberty to use any games that I feel would help the most in the situations.'
Shinku felt a little shocked for a short moment and then a smile broke across the jonin's face. 'Ah of course. I had thought those orders were only for me. I did not think you were included in it so I might have not relayed it to you.'
He played along with the convenient interpretation and gave his permission for whatever came next. Shunsui smiled in return and continued the preparations.
All the platoons in the area had at least one Yamanaka among them. Each of those Yamanaka formed a tight network that connected Shunsui's commands directly to their respective groups.
The mental web allowed every Leaf shinobi within hearing range of the plan to receive the same instructions at the same moment.
Shunsui spoke clearly through the link so that no one would misunderstand the rules that were about to change the battlefield. "In the next few seconds all those within thirty metres of me must listen carefully. No matter what happens when there is a red light do not make a single move. You can only blink. Do not worry about the Kumo shinobi attacking you. Just do as I say. When there is a green light, only then make your move."
Those not of his own platoon who heard the order for the first time looked confused and uncertain.
The idea of freezing in the middle of active combat went against every instinct they had trained.
Yet the voices of Shinku and Choza came through the same network with reassurance and the respect those two jonin commanded made the others agree.
They were very experienced and trusted leaders after all and their acceptance of the strange command carried enough weight for the rest to follow.
Shunsui activated the game known as Red Light Green Light.
A giant scarecrow rose from the torn ground in the centre of the thirty metre circle. The figure stood taller than any man and carried four separate heads that looked outward in every direction at once.
The eyes of all four heads began to glow with a deep and unmistakable red light. The red glow travelled only a few metres yet every Konoha shinobi who had received the warning stopped moving the instant the light appeared.
Shunsui himself froze in place with his swords still raised.
Kumo shinobi saw the Konoha forces stop and immediately tried to take advantage of the opening. They surged forward with weapons ready and jutsu already forming on their lips.
Before they could even move a full inch they all felt their bodies lock in place as if invisible ropes had wrapped around every joint. They looked toward the giant scarecrow and could swear that every one of the four pairs of glowing eyes was staring directly at them no matter where they stood.
Thick strands of straw extended from the scarecrow's body and wrapped tightly around the frozen Cloud shinobi.
The bindings held arms and legs completely still and even blocked the flow of chakra so that no technique could be completed.
Any jutsus that had already been released by either side into the air simply fizzled out and vanished the moment the red light had taken hold.
The four heads of the scarecrow kept their red gaze for several long seconds while the captured Cloud ninja struggled uselessly against the straw restraints.
Then the eyes shifted colour and glowed with a clear green light. The Konoha shinobi who had obeyed the rules were free to move again and they did so at once.
