Chapter 6 - The Only Family I Have Left

The Journey Beyond The Absolute

The Only Family I Have Left

As Lyra stood in the doorway, her expression was tinged with frustration, a flicker of annoyance evident in her furrowed brow and crossed arms. What took you so long, Ather? You should have told me you would be late! Her long, black hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, accentuating her striking black eyes. Clad in a bright red shirt that contrasted beautifully with her sleek black pants, she looked both fierce and adorable in her display of irritation.

I leaned against the wall with an air of nonchalance, wanting to defuse the tension between us. Well, uh, you see, I began, my mind racing to find the right words to convey my thoughts. (Meet my little sister, Lyra Vael. Shes genuinely kindhearted and caring, yet she has a tendency to blow things out of proportion over the smallest of inconveniences. I cant say I blame her, though. Ever since our family disappeared all those years ago, its just been the two of us. In many ways, I understand her need to be anxious its how she copes with the weight of our shared struggles.)

Lyra crossed her arms tighter, pouting as she demanded, No buts! I dont want to hear any excuses. I just want you to be better! Her tone was firm, and the fire in her eyes signaled that she was not about to back down without a fight.

With a gentle chuckle, I tried to lighten the mood. Cheer up, alright? Next time I promise Ill arrive right on time. I reached out and patted her head softly, hoping to bring a smile to her face.

Her cheeks flushed slightly at the physical affection, and she huffed out a reluctant, "You idiot… You always know how to make me feel better. I cant stay mad at you…" With that, she leaned into my comforting presence, her tension slowly easing away as she sank into a calmer state.

A small smile crept across my face it was moments like these that reminded me how much I cherished our bond. "Thats my job," I replied, feeling a warmth in my chest.

Lyra straightened up a bit, reestablishing her composure. "Right…" she said, though it was clear that her eyelids were starting to droop.

I observed her and said, "I think you need some rest, you know."

"I do not!" she protested, though the weariness was evident in her voice as she struggled to keep her eyes open.

"You do," I replied mildly, a hint of amusement playing at my lips.

Lyra pouted, arms still crossed defiantly as she insisted, "I dont!" Her eyes, however, had begun to flutter, and it was obvious she was fighting a losing battle.

"You can be as stubborn as you want to be, but its clear you need sleep. Youre getting it whether you like it or not," I declared, my tone softened by a thread of compassion.

It wasnt long before her eyelids finally gave in, and she slumped forward, caught in the sweet embrace of slumber.

With quick reflexes, I steadied her before she hit the ground, lifting her gently into my arms. She was light and delicate, and I found myself moving quietly toward her room, making sure not to disturb the peacefulness that had settled over her. Once inside, I carefully laid her down on her bed, savoring the sight of her serene expression. Gently, I wrapped the cozy blanket around her, tucking her in securely while taking utmost care not to wake her from her dreamland.

Lyra remained in a peaceful sleep, her breaths deep and rhythmic, a stark contrast to her earlier agitation. I couldnt help but smile at her, marveling at how such simple moments held so much meaning.

After ensuring she was comfortably settled, I tiptoed out of her room and made my way to my own. As I curled up in bed, fatigue washed over me, and I allowed myself to succumb to the weight of exhaustion. Sleep took me, a companion that greeted me warmly, leaving behind the lingering sense of duty and love I felt for my little sister.
