Chapter 12 - Chapter Twelve – When the Palace Turns

(Lyra POV)

The mistake wasn't hers.

Lyra knew that the moment the porcelain tray shattered against the stone floor.

Gasps echoed through the lower service hall as shards skidded across the marble. Warm tea splashed against Lyra's ankle, soaking into the hem of her uniform. She didn't move. Didn't flinch.

She didn't need to look up to know eyes were on her.

"I...I didn't see her," a voice stammered behind her.

Lyra turned slowly.

Selene stood frozen a few steps away, her hands trembling, her face pale. A junior omega. New. Easily frightened.

Too easily frightened.

Madam Elthea arrived almost immediately, her sharp heels striking the floor like judgment itself.

"What happened?" Elthea demanded.

Selene swallowed hard. "She..... she stepped in my way. I lost balance."

A lie.

A bad one.

Lyra felt it then, the shift in the air. Not the bond. Something colder.

Expectation.

This was how it started. Accidents. Blame. Punishment disguised as discipline.

Elthea's gaze landed on Lyra. Cool. Measuring.

"You were assigned to the east corridor," she said. "Why were you here?"

Lyra lifted her chin. "I was rerouted by a senior attendant."

A murmur rippled through the gathered servants.

Elthea's eyes narrowed. "Which one?"

Lyra hesitated for half a heartbeat.

That was enough.

By the time the guards arrived, the hall was full.

Omegas whispered behind lowered hands. Servants paused openly now. Even a few lower-ranked Alphas lingered near the arches, curiosity sharpening their gazes.

Public.

Dangerously public.

"Clean this up," Elthea ordered. Then, more quietly, "Lyra, you will remain."

Selene was already being ushered away, relief written plainly across her face.

Lyra stayed where she was.

Her wolf pressed close to the surface, teeth bared, not in fear, but warning.

This is a test, it said.

(Kael POV)

Kael felt it before he heard it.

The bond flared, sharp, sudden, unmistakable.

He rose from his seat without waiting for the report.

By the time he reached the service hall, the tension was thick enough to choke on. Conversations died instantly at his arrival. Heads bowed. Bodies stiffened.

Lyra stood at the center of it all.

Still. Silent. Unbowed.

Her ankle was red with heat burn. Her uniform damp. Her gaze steady.

Kael's wolf surged forward violently.

Mine.

Elthea turned. "Alpha."

"What happened?" Kael asked.

His voice was calm.

That frightened them more than anger.

Elthea gestured to the broken porcelain. "Negligence. Possibly defiance."

Kael's eyes never left Lyra. "Is that so?"

"Yes," Elthea said. "She hesitated when questioned."

Kael stepped closer.

Closer than he should have.

Lyra felt it immediately, the bond roaring awake, heat curling low in her spine, breath catching despite herself.

The room held its breath.

Kael stopped an arm's length away.

"Look at me," he said quietly.

Lyra did.

Silver met storm-dark.

Something ancient and dangerous passed between them.

"She is injured," Kael said flatly.

Elthea stiffened. "It is minor..... "

"Enough."

The single word cracked through the hall.

Kael turned, addressing everyone now.

"This palace does not punish without proof," he said. "And it does not make spectacles of its omegas."

Whispers erupted.

Elthea's lips pressed thin. "Alpha, this sets a precedent."

Kael didn't care.

"Dismissed," he said.

The hall emptied quickly, but not without looks. Curiosity. Fear. Speculation.

Lyra remained.

(Lyra POV)

When they were alone, Kael's gaze dropped briefly to her ankle.

"You should have spoken sooner," he said.

"I did," Lyra replied.

Silence.

Then, quietly, dangerously, "You are becoming noticeable."

Lyra met his eyes. "So are you."

That was a mistake.

Or a truth.

Kael's jaw tightened. The bond throbbed, heavy and insistent.

"Be careful," he said. "This palace devours those who stand out."

Lyra's voice was steady. "Then it will choke on me."

For the first time, something like a smile touched Kael's mouth.

Brief. Sharp.

Troubled.

By nightfall, the palace buzzed.

The unclaimed omega protected by the Alpha.

The Head Supervisor overruled.

The bond no one wanted to name.

Lyra lay awake in her room, fully aware of one thing:

She had crossed a line.

And Kael had crossed one with her.

There would be consequences.

Not tomorrow.

Soon.
