Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen – Consequences Have Teeth

The palace knew.

It didn't matter that no one had been in the room with them. It didn't matter that the door had been closed.

By morning, the air itself felt different, sharp with speculation, heavy with knowing looks. Servants avoided her gaze. Guards watched her too closely. Even the walls seemed to listen.

Aria found her near the water basin, eyes wide.

"They're saying the Alpha left your quarters after midnight."

Lyra's fingers stilled in the water.

"They're saying more than that," Aria whispered. "They're saying you tempted him."

Lyra straightened slowly. "Let them."

But her wolf wasn't calm.

It paced. Alert. Satisfied, and wary.

Kael was summoned before sunrise.

The Council chamber was cold stone and older power. Elders sat in a half-circle, expressions carved from judgment and tradition.

"You are compromising neutrality," one of them said.

"You are allowing a distraction," said another.

Kael stood unmoving.

"She is unclaimed," an elder pressed. "Yet you guard her, intervene for her, dismiss discipline meant for her."

"She is under my protection," Kael said.

Silence followed.

"That," the eldest said quietly, "is a claim in all but name."

Kael's jaw tightened.

Before he could respond, the chamber doors opened.

Alpha Rhydian entered unannounced.

"I apologize for the intrusion," Rhydian said pleasantly. "But since Lyra's name is being discussed, I thought my presence… appropriate."

The room stilled.

Rhydian's gaze flicked to Kael, amused.

"I've formally requested consideration."

Kael's control snapped inward, brutal and tight.

"She is not available."

Rhydian smiled. "You haven't said that publicly."

The elders exchanged looks.

"This is becoming a political matter," the eldest said. "An unclaimed omega of interest cannot remain undefined."

Kael felt the noose tighten.

(Lyra POV)

She was summoned before noon.

The walk to the council chamber felt longer than it should have. Guards flanked her, not threatening, but unmistakable.

Inside, the air pressed down on her shoulders.

She felt Kael immediately.

Not comfort.

Not protection.

Tension.

Rhydian turned when she entered, gaze sharp and curious. "Lyra," he said warmly. "You look stronger than I expected."

She didn't bow.

Kael noticed.

Everyone noticed.

"Lyra," the eldest elder said, "you stand at the center of a growing conflict. Do you understand that?"

"Yes," Lyra answered.

"Do you deny inappropriate conduct with the Alpha?"

The bond flared, hot, furious.

Lyra didn't look at Kael when she spoke.

"No."

The word landed like a blade.

A murmur rippled through the chamber.

Rhydian laughed softly. "Honest. I like that."

Kael's hands curled into fists.

"She is provoking instability," an elder said. "If you will not claim her, Kael, then release her."

Release her.

The word rang in Lyra's ears.

Rhydian stepped forward. "I would be willing to offer sanctuary. And protection. And choice."

Choice.

That was deliberate.

Kael's control shattered.

"No," he said.

The chamber froze.

Kael turned to Lyra.

And for the first time, he spoke not as Alpha, not as ruler, but as a male bound by something older than law.

"You will not leave this palace," he said. "Not with him. Not with anyone."

Lyra met his gaze.

The bond roared.

"Then stop pretending I'm free," she said quietly.

Silence.

Heavy. Final.

The eldest elder exhaled slowly.

"You have until the next full moon," he said.

"Claim her, or relinquish her."

That night, Lyra stood at her window, watching the palace lights flicker.

The kiss had been a spark.

This was the fire.

She felt Kael outside her door, but he didn't enter.

Didn't speak.

Didn't retreat.

The bond stretched tight between them, humming with inevitability.

One of them would break first.

And Lyra was no longer sure it would be her.
