Chapter 11 - Chapter Eleven – Eyes in the Palace

(Lyra POV)

The palace never truly slept.

Lyra learned that quickly.

Even at dawn, when the light was still pale and uncertain, footsteps echoed through the halls, guards changing shifts, servants whispering instructions, omegas lining up with lowered heads. The air itself felt alert, as though the walls were listening.

She joined the line without hesitation.

Around her, omegas stood shoulder to shoulder, their gazes fixed on the floor. Some were young, barely past their first shift. Others were older, hardened by years of service. Lyra recognized a few faces, whispers followed her everywhere now.

Not loudly. Never openly.

But she felt them.

At the front of the hall stood Madam Elthea, the Head Omega Supervisor. Tall, sharp-eyed, and severe, Elthea was known for two things: discipline and memory. She never forgot a face. Never forgot a mistake.

Her gaze swept over the line and paused, just briefly, on Lyra.

Too long to be accidental.

"Assignments," Elthea said crisply. "Listen carefully. I will not repeat myself."

Names were called. Duties assigned. Kitchens. Guest corridors. Archive cleaning.

Then....

"Lyra."

The single word tightened the room.

"You will assist in the upper residential wing today," Elthea continued. "Alone."

A murmur rippled through the omegas before being crushed by Elthea's glare.

Lyra bowed her head. "Yes, Madam."

Aria's fingers brushed her sleeve as they separated. Finn didn't look at her, he knew better. Drawing attention now would be dangerous.

Lyra straightened and walked away, spine straight, steps measured.

She felt it again.

That faint, unsettling pull beneath her skin.

Not fear.

Awareness.

(Kael POV)

Kael observed the assignment from the upper balcony.

He hadn't ordered it himself, not directly, but Elthea understood pressure when she felt it. She always did.

Below, Lyra moved through the hall with infuriating composure. No hesitation. No signs of weakness. No visible reaction to being singled out.

She's adapting, his wolf growled.

Kael's jaw tightened.

Nearby, Darian, his Beta, leaned against a column, arms crossed. "You're being obvious," Darian said quietly.

Kael didn't look at him. "Am I?"

"You've reassigned the same omega three times this week. The staff is starting to notice."

Kael's gaze followed Lyra as she disappeared down the corridor. "Let them."

Darian sighed. "That's not how this works. The Council already thinks you're… distracted."

Kael finally turned. His silver eyes were cold. "Do not finish that sentence."

Darian lifted his hands in surrender. "Just saying, if you're testing her, do it carefully. Omegas break faster than you think."

Kael's wolf snarled.

She will not break.

Not like the others.

(Lyra POV)

The upper wing was quieter than the rest of the palace.

Too quiet.

Lyra moved methodically, setting trays, checking linens, keeping her breathing steady. She knew the rules here, no lingering, no wandering, no looking into rooms uninvited.

She followed them.

Mostly.

As she worked, she became aware of eyes on her. Not just guards. Servants paused longer than necessary. A noblewoman passing through the corridor slowed, gaze sharp and curious.

By midday, whispers had already spread.

That omega.

The one the Alpha watches.

The unclaimed one.

Lyra kept her face neutral, but inside, her wolf stirred, alert, restless.

She wasn't invisible anymore.

And that was dangerous.

(Kael POV)

From the council chamber windows, Kael watched the palace floor below.

Lyra crossed the courtyard with a tray balanced effortlessly in her hands. Her movements were controlled, efficient, too controlled for someone who was supposed to be fragile.

Riven, his Gamma, stepped beside him. "You're letting her stand out."

Kael didn't respond.

Riven continued, voice edged with suspicion. "Unclaimed omegas attract trouble. Rival Alphas. Political questions. If you don't intend to claim her, you should remove her from the palace."

The bond pulsed.

Hard.

Kael's fingers curled against the stone ledge. "And if I do intend to claim her?"

Riven's brows lifted slightly. "Then stop pretending you don't."

Silence stretched between them.

Kael turned away.

(Lyra POV)

By evening, exhaustion settled into her muscles, but it wasn't the dull ache of overwork. It was the sharp burn of restraint. Of holding herself in check while every instinct screamed to move faster, strike harder, push further.

She returned to her assigned room just as the sun dipped low, closing the door quietly behind her.

Only then did she allow herself to breathe.

Her wolf paced beneath her skin, frustrated but focused.

They're watching, it warned.

"I know," Lyra whispered.

She sat on the edge of the bed, fists clenched, heart steady.

Let them watch.

Let them whisper.

She wasn't surviving anymore.

She was changing.

And soon, whether Kael wanted it or not, the palace would feel it.

(Kael POV)

Night fell.

From his chambers, Kael stood alone, the bond humming like a live wire beneath his skin. He could feel her, awake, alert, unbowed.

The rejection had not broken her.

It had sharpened her.

That realization settled heavily in his chest.

Dangerous.

Fascinating.

Inevitable.
