Chapter 13 Part 2 Classroom Shock

Aunt smiled softly. "You listened. Looks like it's working."

Even though she'd said before never to ask that, he asked anyway.

The next morning, Qi skipped his run he didn't want to bump into the round-faced girl. Since it was the first day back at school, he left early.
He had paperwork to do and went to see homeroom teacher Mr. Zhou before class. After completing the reinstatement process, it was already time for morning reading. The instant Qi entered the classroom, he wanted to turn and flee!
The round-faced girl sat there, eyes wide on him, stammering, "Y-you it's you…"
"Beigong Lingyu, it's morning reading. What are you doing?" Mr. Zhou stared, surprised by the girl's fluster.

Mr. Zhou followed her finger and said, "This is classmate Qi. He took over a month of medical leave. He's back today. Oh right, you transferred recently; you two haven't met."
He tugged the downcast, ghostly-looking Qi to the girl. "That's transfer student Beigong. She transferred the day after the ambulance took you away, I think." He pointed to the seat next to her. "We rearranged seats while you were gone. There's an empty seat beside Beigong. Sit there for now."
Beigong Lingyu nearly shouted, "I'm not sitting with him!"
Qi tugged Mr. Zhou's sleeve, head lowered. "She doesn't want to… could I change seat?"
The noisy classroom fell silent. Qi, though not popular, was harmless and had excellent grades; he was generally well-liked. The transfer student's sudden hostility baffled everyone. New for just a month, and already bristling at a classmate? Disapproval hung in the air. Feeling the chill of many eyes, Beigong lowered her head, wishing the floor would swallow her.
Seeing her fall silent, Mr. Zhou didn't change his mind. "It's fine. Sit where I arranged. Beigong may just be shy see? She's quiet now."
At school, the teacher's word was law. Qi, helpless, sat next to her, unwillingly. He didn't dare glance her way, pretending to busy himself with school supplies.
Half a day passed and he absorbed none of the lessons. During breaks he fled his seat, while Beigong did the opposite head down, never leaving, all morning.
At noon, Qi packed up at lightning speed, trying to escape. But some impulse made him murmur as he passed, "Don't you need the restroom?"
No sooner had he left the room than there came the crash of desk and chair, followed by a few students' startled yelps. Instinct screamed: "She's flipping out." He sprinted home faster than ever.
Slipping into class like a thief in the afternoon, he found the seat beside his empty. A classmate said Beigong had upended her desk at noon and was taken to the office; she hadn't returned.
Qi finally relaxed into his chair then tensed again. "If she tells the office what she saw last night…?" But then he eased. "Who'd believe it? A first-year boy and a gorgeous adult woman doing it in the park? With only her word? If I deny and Aunt denies, she's slandering us. What's to fear?" At that, Qi felt serene.
And the chair under him tilted back, gently rocking.
