Chapter 15 Part 2 Night Confessions And Pickup
Beigong wiped her nose and lay flat in the sand, limbs spread like a star. "I have to stay out late. If someone books all night, I can only find a spot near home to sleep it off."
"I get it. You hate the clients and that… act. You saw me with my au cough, girlfriend and took it out on me," he suggested.
"Idiot you've got it exactly wrong. I don't hate the act or even the clients. Some are very kind. Quite a few, after learning our situation, pay my mom extra. Some used to give me pocket money too. But now I'm older; Mom says it's not appropriate for me to take it. So that stopped." Her eyes gleamed in the dark, and he found himself a little transfixed.
"Then why target me? For that little thing… you hunted me for days."
"Bored," she said lightly.
"What?" he gaped.
"At first I just didn't like your face. Such a pretty sister why would she pick you? I felt bad for her… But like you said, your fling wasn't my business. I had no grounds to hassle you… until you teased me that day."
"When did I tease you?"
"At noon on the first day you said?" She stared pointedly. He thought back and slapped his own cheek. "Right my stupid mouth. 'Don't you need the restroom?'"
Seeing him self-slap, she actually looked a bit embarrassed. "I think you're interesting. I've brawled with boys since I was little. You're the first not to hit back and you say you never hit women. That annoyed me like you're so noble. I wanted to see when you'd snap."
"What if I never do?"
"Then I'll keep hitting you. Free punching bag why not?"
"You're ruthless… I'm scared of you," he muttered through clenched teeth.
"I knew you run at night; I'm out anyway so I chase and hit you. It's something to do. Not boring!" She cackled and then squealed as Qi pounced.
"What what are you doing?" She was genuinely nervous. She knew he'd been letting her hit him. If he truly meant harm now, she had little chance of escape.
"All this just so you can amuse yourself?" he said, eyes blazing. "I don't hit women because I believe women are to be cherished, not used as punching bags. Men who use them to vent are worthless. But now I've learned some women aren't for cherishing…"
She squeezed her eyes shut in fear. After a moment, nothing happened. She peeked: he sat with the drink in hand beside her.
"Still not hitting me?" she tested.
"You're for cherishing, too," he said, sipping, then lay back next to her. He ignored her sideways stare and looked skyward. "Even at night, you can still see the shadows of clouds."
She stared at him, a little dazed.
They lay in the sea breeze, watching the dark sky. After a while, he asked, "Heading home now?"
She shook her head. "Someone booked all night. The later I go back, the better."
His phone rang Mother.
"Qi, you aren't home?"
"I'm still running. Heading back soon," he said casually.
"Mom's working late very late. Don't wait up. Sleep early."
"Got it, don't tire yourself out."
The call cut. Qi shrugged toward Beigong. "You said my mom's a good person. Hear that? Good people can lie without pausing."
She said nothing.
"'Working late'? Sounds like she's staying out. No one's home at mine. You…" He saw her face flush and realized how it sounded. He corrected, "If you've nowhere to go, want to meet a friend and hang out?"
"Now? It's past ten. What friend is out playing?"
"Only Aunt…" He dialed.
"Aunt uh, Sister Jingyi "
"'Sis Jingyi'? Someone's itchy," came Aunt's dry tone. Qi moved a little away and lowered his voice.
"Aunt, my lovely Aunt, don't be mad. I've got a situation. A female classmate is with me. I don't know how to help her."
"What situation? What do you mean 'help her'? Can't you walk her home?" She heard the knot in his tone and softened.
"She can't go home."
"Well, well, big man one week back at school and you've already sweet-talked a girl into running away?" She snickered.
"Please don't tease me. It's not like that. I have nothing going on with her. Can we explain when we meet?"
"Alright. I trust you you're Aunt's little man. Where are you? I'll drive over."
They waited by the road for ten minutes until Aunt's car pulled up. Seeing Beigong, Aunt laughed. "Hi again, little sister."
Head lowered, Beigong flushed. She recognized the woman from the park the one who'd been "with" Qi.
"Uh, Sis Jingyi…" Qi started, but Aunt flicked her head. "Get in first."
When Qi moved to slide into the back with Beigong, Aunt said, "Qi, front seat."
He hesitated; he didn't understand why. Aunt smiled at Beigong: "This boy's too handsy. Sit with him and his dirty hands might wander. Safer to dump him up front where I can watch."
Qi puffed his cheeks in protest. Aunt tapped his face lightly; his lips popped a silly "bo" sound.
He leaned to Aunt's ear and whispered, "Who says that about their own nephew?"
She sniped back under her breath, "In front of Aunt you call yourself her little man then a pretty girl shows up and you turn back into 'nephew'? You change fast."
Qi suddenly took her earlobe into his mouth and licked. Aunt hadn't expected him to tease her in front of another girl; she pushed him back quickly and glanced behind Beigong stared, dumbfounded.
Smug, Qi flopped into the front passenger seat.
After Aunt got in, he whispered, "Mom called earlier likely staying out overnight." Aunt's face didn't change.
"She's Beigong Lingyu, my classmate new transfer. Home's complicated; she probably can't go back tonight. And to be clear it's not what you said I didn't lure her into running away. I'm not that capable." He introduced quickly.
He didn't know how to introduce Aunt to Beigong, but Aunt took over: "Just call me Sister Jingyi. As for my relationship with Qi… hmm… how should I put it?"
Beigong murmured, almost inaudible, head still down, "I know. I saw you that night."
Aunt checked the mirror and smiled. "That makes it simple. You can sleep at my place tonight. But it's too early to head home now. So… come play with me awhile."
Beigong looked baffled; Qi had a pretty good idea. "Karaoke again?"
"It's the weekend we should have fun! Sleep in tomorrow if we must," Aunt said, delighted.
"I can skip my morning run?" he asked hopefully.
"No. I'll sleep in with Beigong if we want but you keep at it. Or I'll make you pay." Chin high, she was unyielding.
Qi knew he'd been outmaneuvered again. Along the way, Aunt chatted non-stop with Beigong women's social ease on full display. Within minutes, they were chirping like sisters.
Qi fumed, leaning to Aunt's ear to grumble, "You're my aunt. If you two are 'sisters,' what should I call her? Don't overdo it." Aunt's hand shot to his crotch and twisted hard. He bent double, swallowing pain.
Beigong didn't know what they whispered, but seeing it, she burst into carefree laughter along with Aunt.
