Chapter 12 Part 1 Park Training And Texts

On the way home, Mother asked Father with confusion, "What's with little sister? She was acting like she swallowed gunpowder today."

Father answered while driving, "How should I know? She wasn't like this before. Now she talks like that? By the way, Qi, hand over the phone. You're still a student it's not appropriate."

Curled up in the backseat, Qi hesitated. "But Mom already told me to keep it."

Mother sided with Qi. "Weiying, it's already given let him keep it. Since when did Qi's studies ever worry us?"

That was true. Since his parents had started locking him in at home, Qi's grades had never been a concern. Half a semester into middle school, except for PE, he was near the top of the grade in everything though a bit unbalanced. Exceptionally strong in humanities and history, but weaker in science and engineering.

Father thought a moment and nodded. "Alright… Qi, keep the phone."

Qi answered respectfully, "Thanks, Dad."

All the way, Mother sat turned toward the back from the front passenger seat, asking about Qi's days at Aunt's. Qi of course could not tell the truth, only mentioned cleaning and helping with cooking.

Mother then asked what had happened to Aunt those days. Qi said, "Nothing much when I got there. On the second day, Aunt went to the office around dusk… She came back in a bad mood."

He spoke as if casually, but it landed with meaning. Through the rearview mirror, Qi noticed a faint change flash across Father's face.

Mother nodded and sat straight again. Seeing she had stopped asking, Qi took out the fitness plan Aunt had prepared. "Mom, you and Dad have seen it this is the plan Aunt made for me the other day. She said I'm weak and just resting won't work. She told me to follow this. What do you think?"

Mother took it again and looked. "So many items and tightly scheduled. Can your body handle it?"

Father spoke up. "Juan, when it comes to fitness, Xiao Jing's a pro she has actual coaching certificates. Let Qi practice as written. Don't fuss as his mother."

"I know, I'm just worried he can't take it," Mother puffed her cheeks at Father.

Father glanced sideways. "Tch… how old are you, still making faces? Qi, look your mom, that's how she is…"

Seeing Mother turn to him, Qi copied her face exactly. She clicked her tongue, sat straight, and said dreamily, "The old one bullies me, now the young one does too."

The warm laughter of three filled the car.

In Qi's ears, the laughter sounded especially harsh especially fake. A thought flashed up: "This talent for acting must be inherited from my parents. Just not sure if it's more from Dad or Mom."

At home, Qi immediately slipped into his room nothing unusual to his parents.

He shut the door, pulled out his phone, set it to silent vibrate, and sent a test text.

"I'm back. Casually mentioned the day at the Cultural Bureau."

A reply came soon.

"Trying to die? You dare bring that up?"

Qi answered:

"I didn't say I went just that you did."

Reply:

"Clever. My face is ruined anyway."

Qi chuckled and pressed a few keys quickly.

"Miss you."

Reply:

"Miss your damn mother."

"Miss mother too."

Reply:

"Die, you mother-fetish creep!"

"Liking Aunt isn't a perversion, right?"

Reply:

"Even worse!"

Qi sank into the exchange, forgetting everything around him, until Mother called him to dinner.

He stood, hit "clear message history," put the phone away, and left the room.

After dinner, Qi practiced Daoist breath-guiding exercises right in the dining room. Mother was unsurprised, but Father recognized it and asked, "That's a Daoist guiding technique. Qi, where did you learn it?"

From the kitchen, Mother answered first: "When I took Qi walking on Xiangyun Road, we met a Daoist at the temple. He heard Qi was unwell and taught him a set. Why?"

"Oh…" Father nodded. "Nothing. Practicing to strengthen the body is good. Years ago at Laoshan I saw Daoists train that; I wanted to learn but they refused. Not bad." He went to the couch for the news.

Before sleep, Qi stuck Aunt's training plan above his headboard.

At dawn, after breakfast, Qi went out in sportswear for a run. Mother stared as if she'd seen an alien. Only after he'd left did she come to her senses. "Weiying, did I see that right? Qi actually went running…"

"Mmm, I saw," Father said calmly.

"How is this possible? Before we couldn't force him outside. He stays a few days at little sister's and now goes out on his own." Mother was incredulous.

"Probably got 'handled' by little sister. With his lazy nature, his aunt wouldn't tolerate it. And you, as his mother, leaving the education to his aunt."

"You mean Xiao Jing hit him? That won't do. He's mine, even an aunt can't hit him." Mother's eyes widened.

"I said maybe! Qi didn't say she hit him… Don't glare at me. Okay, okay… I yield."

After leaving the complex, Qi jogged down the alley, almost unconsciously following the route he had taken when tailing his mother, arriving at the nearby park. Tired, he stopped running and walked along the path. Aunt had said: don't force it at first; if you can't run, walk but complete the planned distance.

Qi wasn't a boy of great perseverance. If something felt impossible, he'd consider giving up rather than force himself. But now a subtle self-compulsion had taken root: he didn't want Aunt to look down on him. He had to finish the plan she set. He wondered why he had such a thought and consoled himself: "Maybe this is the power of love."

While lost in thought, someone bumped him from behind. He almost fell but kept balance, looking up to see a girl in sportswear pass him. She turned, jogging in place with an apologetic face. "Sorry." Then turned and ran on.

She looked about his age, with a clean, round face and bright eyes. Her ponytail swung rhythmically as she ran.

"A very pretty girl. I didn't even know there's such a cute girl around here." He smiled. "Of course I didn't I never go out."

Back home, his parents had left for work. After a short rest, he continued with aerobics practice. In the last two days at Aunt's, she focused on his aerobics. Without her beside him, training was dull, but he stayed focused. Those days, seeing her in a leotard massive, round breasts trembling with movement, and that pronounced deep groove pressing up from her mound his body reacted automatically, and he'd get a sharp flick on the head from Aunt.
