Chapter 16 - Klein, the Favored One

Oops!

Klein's pupils dilated slightly, and he leaned abruptly against the edge of the carriage. He had only one thought: deep regret. He regretted his reckless actions. Klein remembered clearly that both at the Tarot meeting and in the Night Watchers' files he had seen, the records about the Aurora Society consistently mentioned one point:

All members of the Aurora Society are mentally twisted lunatics!

"It's over..." This thought flashed through Klein's mind, followed by the instinct for survival. He bit his lower lip, his body slightly stiff and hunched over, his brain working rapidly, and he quickly figured out what had happened.

Why would a wealthy and generous gentleman only find himself in the Antigonus family's notes? Why would he be so friendly with the company's employees during a routine business transaction? His target is me! Could it be that my "resurrection" disrupted their plans and caught the attention of the Aurora Society members?

Seeing Klein pursing his lips, seemingly unprepared to answer, Wei Gao smiled and said, "A few days ago, when you were investigating Haynes Vancent... that is, when your captain entered his dream, you saw the true creator, right?"

Huh? How did he know? No, that's not right! Klein couldn't help but ask:

"How do you know about the captain's affairs?! What exactly is the Aurora Society trying to do?"

"I need to correct you on one point, Klein." Wei Gao looked at the somewhat anxious Klein and said calmly, "First of all, the Aurora Society has no ill intentions towards you don't deny it yet, Klein. Think about it, your captain didn't have any bad experiences after facing the true creator. Isn't that enough to prove that the Aurora Society has no ill intentions? If there really were ill intentions, would I be acting like this?"

"I admit that the Aurora Society's evil deeds were countless, but have you noticed that since you 'transmigrated' into Klein's body, the Aurora Society has hardly taken any action?"

That makes sense... Klein thought to himself, but he still looked at Wei Gao and remained silent.

"Before this, the true creator was in a state of madness. It was thanks to your arrival in this world that I had the opportunity to bypass the gaze of the gods and help the true creator break free from madness…" Wei Gao said with a highly misleading reason he had fabricated, "Or do you really think that a god can weaken to the point of being able to harbor malice towards mortals without the mortals dying?"

"Yes... Heh, even I, the 'Fool' who's treated like a god, am only at Sequence Nine..." Klein thought bitterly. He processed the higher dimension's words in his mind and cautiously asked, "How did you find me? And why is the 'True Creator' looking for me?"

"Answer me one question first, what's your name? Klein, as a 'transmigrator,' I've already told you my real name. It would be somewhat rude of you not to tell me, wouldn't it? I understand your fear of the Aurora Society as a Night Watchman, but at least trust me a little in this kind of matter, right?" Wei Gao stared silently at Klein, refusing to speak no matter how Klein questioned him. Seeing Wei Gao's resolute attitude and realizing he wouldn't get the answer he wanted no matter what, Klein considered his words for a moment and then asked:

"Will you tell me what you were planning before?"

"Given our identities, I will. It's hardly a secret," Wei Gao smiled. "After all, you and I are among the few people in this world who share a common language. However, I must remind you of one thing Klein, I am not a member of the Aurora Society. The deity behind me is not the true creator. On the contrary, it is precisely because the deity behind me has a cooperative relationship with the true creator that I am the one who came to find you."

A god? Sigh, that makes sense. I was able to enter that mysterious gray fog space, and other transmigrators have other "cheat codes" too... Hiss, does the true creator think that I, the disguised "Fool," am another god, and that Klein Moretti, who appears in the outside world, is the god's representative? That's why he sought me out no, sought out the "Fool" behind me to cooperate? I'm innocent!

"Zhou, my surname is Zhou. Before I came into this world, my name was Zhou Mingrui," Klein said in a low voice, his wariness undiminished. "Now can you tell me the reason?"

"The reason is…" Wei Gao nodded: "Because you and I are both favored by the true Creator."

"?"

In the land forsaken by the gods, the true creator stared at the scene unfolding on the light screen, his mouth slowly agape. Looking at the higher-dimensional being looking down upon him, he couldn't help but wonder, "You... saying it directly, really... will make Klein feel favorably towards us...?"

"Don't worry, a cat needs to be soothed after it's been puffed up. In the end, isn't it all because your Aurora Society has such a bad reputation?" The High Dimension Overlord spoke to the True Creator through his avatar: "Sometimes, lies can cover things up for a while, but not forever. The fortune tellers are all incredibly cunning well, except for a certain exchange student from the Storm Path. You don't know, sometimes you just have to be upfront. Tell him the truth, and he'll understand after thinking about it."

Looking at the speechless true creator, the higher-dimensional observer smiled. But inwardly, the higher-dimensional being silently protested to its true form:

"Hey! Can you please not make me do this kind of thing next time? We're higher-dimensional observers, not some other kind of god! I don't like doing things that embarrass me. Can't I just watch the 'plot unfold'?"

"I find it quite amusing," the higher-dimensional observer said, hiding behind his veil, watching his most human-like self grow increasingly exasperated. After a moment's thought, he said, "Alright, once the true creator regains his sanity, I'll prepare to drop the Void Shell onto this planet. Then you can do whatever you want. Oh, and remember to share your feelings with us, otherwise we'll get quite bored."

"…" Wei Gao gave himself the middle finger.

"What did you say?" Klein tried his best to suppress his facial expressions, trying to make them less distorted. The chosen one of the evil gods is actually me? Klein recalled a meme he had seen online before:

Three years, three years, and another three years... If you don't close the net soon, I'll be the boss by now.

However, when it came to her, things seemed to be reversed. Having joined the Night Watch, she was now being told that she was a follower of the evil god worshipped in the most dangerous cult.

"Do you think the favor of the gods is valuable? Ah, for some devout believers, it is indeed so, but for you ha, for those of us who came from that era, what use is the favor of the gods? I myself am a follower of the true creator and the gods behind me, and you... are probably a follower of the gray mist that dominates your side, aren't you?" Wei Gao said to Klein with a sneer, pretending not to know.

No… actually, I am the ruler of the Gray Fog… at least for now… As Klein was lost in thought, he overheard a secret from the higher dimension:

"I don't know if you've read Roselle Gustav's diary. In his later years, it was because of the favor shown to His child by the god of steam and machinery that He broke with the god of steam."

From Wei Gao's tone, Klein could sense a strong sense of blasphemy. He didn't insult the gods, but he seemed to disregard them completely. Klein vaguely saw a faint glow emanating from him, as if this glow separated Wei Gao's mystical connections from the outside world, becoming the basis for his arrogant words.

Klein stared at the high dimension for a long time, silent. He sensed a familiar feeling within that faint light, as if the light emanating from the high dimension was the same as the gray mist he usually ascended. Could this be the power bestowed upon him by the being behind him, as he had said? No… perhaps he was hiding his true strength, maybe he, like me, was masquerading as a great being but couldn't reveal it to others…

"Emperor Roselle?" Klein continued, following Wei Gao's words, determined to extract information from him: "How do you know about him? Did you also read his diary?"

"So you've read Russell's diary too…" Wei Gao stroked his chin. "Have you ever come across this memorable quote?"

"What?" Klein was somewhat bewildered. He couldn't quite keep up with the higher dimension's train of thought; the higher dimension's thinking and language were jumping around too fast, leaving him unsure how to proceed.

"So you haven't heard of it." Wei Gao said with some regret. "It's a pity. If you had heard of it, you would definitely be able to say it offhand. Rosell once had a little-known saying: 'The taste of a witch is really good!' He wrote it in his diary, but unfortunately you probably haven't seen that one."

After saying that, Wei Gao sighed, seemingly with regret.

"?!?!" Klein, who had been listening intently, nearly fainted when he heard this sentence. He looked at Wei Gao in disbelief, as if Roselle's image as an "outstanding predecessor of transmigrators" was gradually collapsing.

"If I remember correctly... the Witch Cult? Emperor Roselle had affairs with members of the Witch Cult?" He recalled the records within the Night Watchers, quite shocked. However, Wei Gao simply smiled without saying a word. It could only be said that young K was still too young, completely unaware of the true secrets behind the Witch Cult...

"We're here, come in." As the carriage stopped, Wei Gao led Klein down. Klein cautiously surveyed his surroundings. Before him lay only an ordinary house; there was none of the sinister ritualistic scene or cultists plotting evil schemes he had imagined. Compared to a cult's stronghold, it felt more like a cozy little home. Although Klein knew he couldn't let his guard down because of appearances, he unconsciously relaxed a little.

"Alright, Mr. Z. You have thirteen hours to leave Tingen. After that, the Punishers will do everything they can to block the Aurora Society members in Tingen. If Backlund doesn't receive news of your arrival by then, you will be put on the death list."

"I understand, Your Excellency." Mr. Z bowed slightly.

"I wish you success." Wei Gao said calmly to Mr. Z, "Compared to a divine messenger, I don't think you should take such a big risk to take away a few cryptids whose faith is unknown."

"…I'm sorry," Mr. Z whispered, "I don't want the Lord's believers to have sacrificed in vain."

"Your divine messenger is not bad." In the land of the forsaken gods, the high-dimensional observer said to the true creator, "The fact that such a great turn of events could occur simply from a change in your attitude is enough to prove his piety. However, it is not enough."

"Yes…" the True Creator murmured, feeling the madness of humanity gradually taking over His will again: "Not enough, not enough…"

The avatar of the higher-dimensional observer sat in the Forsaken Land, watching the darkness tremble incessantly in the air. He smiled slightly, watching the true creator struggle between madness and reason.

"How is it, Klein? Not bad, right?" Wei Gao walked into the living room and casually sat down, gesturing for Klein to make himself at home. He looked at the somewhat hesitant Klein and said with a smile:

"Ask me anything you want, but there are some things I can't tell you. I know the Aurora Club has a... well, not a good reputation. Chinese people don't lie to other Chinese people. I know it must be tough for you to be in a strange world right now. If you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them."

Questions? Klein had so many questions he wanted to ask. But the man before him was the true creator, and also a follower of another unknown evil god. Even if they were from the same hometown, Klein couldn't believe the man's attitude. Even before his transmigration, Klein knew to be wary of everyone he met, let alone this unknown fellow townsman?

He couldn't even be sure what level of extraordinary being this "higher dimension" in front of him was, or what kind of abilities he possessed he knew too little about the extraordinary world. Given the precedent of Old Neil, he wasn't sure what state this person was in, or whether he had been corrupted by an evil god. Therefore, he dared not ask those seemingly offensive questions.

As for their time travel, or whether the higher dimensions have found their way home... at least, Klein doesn't dare to reveal everything yet, nor does he dare to completely trust the higher dimensions.

Although Klein's caution during his time in Tingen was far less than his caution after experiencing death, as a keyboard warrior educated in China, Klein still had a good sense of vigilance—or to put it bluntly, the current Klein was more at ease.

Having thought all this through, Klein took a deep breath and asked carefully, "Higher dimension... why do you say that I am a chosen one of the true Creator?"
