Got it — guest room sleep, study call, short memory of the cage, pack admits fault. Here:
HOPE
He falls asleep on the fountain edge.
Right in the middle of apologizing for crying on the fountain. Head tips forward, eyes close, coffee cup slips. Mom catches it before it spills.
"Stiles?" I whisper, nudging his shoulder. "Hey."
He mumbles something soft and sad. "...sorry, Dad... I'll be good..."
He's out. Breathing deep. Hands still shaking even asleep. Blood drying on his hoodie.
Dad looks at Elijah. Elijah looks at Freya. Freya looks at Mom.
"He's eighteen," Mom says quietly. "He just ripped a vampire apart to save Hope and then cried for twenty minutes. He's not sleeping in a motel with bedbugs tonight."
"He can take the blue guest room," Freya says. "I'll ward it light. Not to lock him. Just to... let us know if he has a nightmare."
Elijah picks him up like he weighs nothing. Which, for Elijah, he does. Stiles curls into it automatically, head on Elijah's shoulder.
"...tacos?" he mumbles. "Sorry..."
I have to press my hand over my mouth so I don't laugh and cry at the same time.
We get him to the blue room. Mom pulls his shoes off. I pull the blanket up. Freya gently wipes blood off his hands with a warm cloth. He doesn't wake. Just breathes.
"Will someone stay with him?" I ask.
"I will in a minute," Mom says. "First we need to talk. All of us. Study. Now."
She looks at his cracked phone sticking out of his hoodie pocket. Screen lit up. 47 missed calls. Dad. Scott. Derek.
"We need to figure out his pack," Mom says. "What happened back home. Why he flinches when he's happy."
STILES
Dark. Warm blanket. Soft pillow that smells like lavender.
Safe? Is this safe? Don't get used to it. Be good so they let you stay.
Dad? Scott? Are you mad? I'm sorry. I'll be quiet. I'll count. One two three four...
Don't lock the door. Please don't lock the door. I'll be good. I promise I'll be good.
...Hope? Are you okay? Your arm? I fixed him. I played sorry. Did I scare you? I'm sorry I scared you.
Don't leave. Please don't look scared. Everybody looks scared. Please...
HAYLEY
Study. Doors shut. Stiles's phone on the table between us.
Klaus paces. Elijah stands. Freya sits with tea she isn't drinking. Hope sits on the arm of my chair, picking at her healed neck.
"We let him stay because he's a child," Klaus says. "A child who could level this house giggling. We need to know what made him."
"He said his dad and friends got scared," Hope says. "He said he didn't hurt them. He left."
"Then why do they keep calling?" I tap the phone. 47 missed calls in three days. Last one two hours ago. Voicemail full.
Freya nods. "We call them. We ask what happened. Full truth. If they're at fault—"
"They are," I say. I feel it in my gut. Wolf mom gut. "No good kid apologizes that much unless someone taught him he's a problem."
Elijah picks up the phone. "It's locked."
"Try his birthday?" Hope says. "No— try... his Jeep? He loves his Jeep."
Freya touches the screen lightly, whispers. The lock clicks open. She winces. "Sorry, Stiles. We'll tell you later."
Recent calls: Dad (32), Scott (11), Derek (4). Elijah hits call back on Dad. Speaker.
It rings once. A man answers, breathless, panicked.
"Stiles?! Is that you?! Son, where are you?!"
Silence in our study. Hope grabs my hand.
Elijah speaks, calm and formal. "Hello. My name is Elijah Mikaelson. Your son is safe. He's asleep in our home in New Orleans. We need to talk about what happened to him."
A long pause. Then the man breaks.
"Oh thank god. Oh thank god he's alive. Is he okay? Is he hurt? Did he— did he lose his temper? Is everyone there okay?"
Klaus leans in. "Everyone here is alive. Though not for lack of testing. Who am I speaking to?"
"Sheriff Stilinski. John's— I'm his dad. His father. Please, don't— don't lock him up. Please. I know he's scary when he gets mad. I know. Just... please don't cage him. We did that. It was our fault. All of it."
Mom-me wants to reach through the phone and shake him. "This is Hayley Marshall. I'm a mother too. Tell us what you did."
Another voice cuts in, younger, earnest. The Sheriff must have hit add call without asking.
"This is Scott McCall. Is Stiles with you? Is he okay? Put Derek on too— Derek, get in here!"
A third voice, low and gruff. "I'm here. Is the kid alive?"
Hope whispers to me, "Pack."
Yes. Pack.
SCOTT
My hands won't stop shaking and I'm supposed to be the Alpha. The leader. The guy with a plan.
I hear these strangers in New Orleans — Mikaelson? Like the Mikaelsons? — and all I can think is Stiles is alive. He's alive and asleep and safe.
"He's okay?" I ask again. "He's really okay? He eats? He jokes? Does he still do the taco thing?"
"He brought us tacos," a girl says softly. Young. My age. Hope? "Two times. Even after... after today."
I close my eyes. Derek puts a hand on my shoulder. Sheriff is crying quietly next to me. We're all in the Sheriff's kitchen in Beacon Hills surrounded by maps and empty coffee cups. We've been searching for months. Time blurs. He just vanished.
"Tell them," Sheriff whispers. "Tell them what we did. They need to know so they don't do it again."
I take a breath. This is the hardest thing I've ever said.
"It's our fault. All of it. We saw what he became and we tried to imprison him."
"Explain," the formal man says. Elijah. "From the start. What happened to Stiles?"
I look at Derek. Derek nods. You tell it. You're better with words.
"Okay. Okay, so... Stiles got... changed. A few months ago. It wasn't one thing. It was like three things at once. A bite that should have killed him. A... a ritual that went wrong where he pulled magic to save us. And then... he died. He actually died for like a minute. And when he came back, he was... everything. Stronger than me. Stronger than Derek. Faster than anything. Needed blood. Could pull magic out of the air without meaning to. Healing instantly. We tested— we didn't mean to test like lab rats, but... nothing could hurt him for long. Freya— I mean, Deaton said he'd never seen anything truly immortal before."
"And you got scared," the woman says. Hayley. Not a question.
"Yes," I admit. Shame burns my face. "He was still Stiles. Funny. Kind. Bringing us food. Checking if we slept. But then... when he got really mad..."
DEREK
Scott can't say it. I'll say it. I'm good at ugly truth.
"He changed. Still Stiles, but... creepy-kind. Sweet voice. Head tilt. Giggling like a kid playing. Polite while he did terrible things."
I hear sharp inhales on the other end. The girl whispers, "That's it. That's what we saw today."
"You saw it?" I ask fast. "Did he hurt you? Did he hurt Hope? Please tell me he didn't—"
"He saved me," Hope says. Clear. "A vampire broke my arm and tore my neck. Stiles... played sorry with him. Then he cried and held my hand while Freya healed me. He didn't hurt us."
Sheriff sobs out loud. Scott grips the table.
"Good," I mutter. "Good. He never hurt us either. That's what kills me. We locked him up and he never hurt us."
"Tell them about the cage," Sheriff says. "Tell them so they never do it."
SHERIFF
I haven't slept right since the night we lost my son.
I'm the Sheriff. I'm supposed to protect people. I'm his dad. I'm supposed to protect him first.
I speak into the phone to these strangers who have my boy asleep in a blue room.
"We put him in the Hale vault. Old Argent bunker under the preserve. Mountain ash lines. Steel door. Wolfsbane cuffs — not enough to kill, just to make him weak. We told ourselves it was to help him control it. To keep him safe while Deaton found a cure. To keep the town safe."
My voice cracks.
"He begged us. God, he begged. Calm. Kind. Crying. 'Please, Dad, it's me, I'm okay, I'll be good, I'll count, I'll breathe, don't lock the door.' Scott cried. I cried. Derek just stared at the floor."
I close my eyes and I'm back there. Short memory. It only lasted minutes but I see it every night.
He's sitting on the cot in that cold cell, eighteen, hoodie sleeves pulled over his hands, smiling up at us through the bars trying to be funny.
"Hey, at least the room service is good, right? Dad, you brought me Jell-O? Grape? You know I hate grape. Kidding. I love it. Thanks."
Then Deaton says we need to keep him under for a week. A week in the ash. A week in cuffs. To reset.
Stiles stops smiling. Quiet. Head tilts. Sweet.
"Oh," he says softly. Giggles a little. "You don't want to play with me? Okay. I'll play alone."
He stands. He touches the mountain ash line — should burn him, should trap him — and he siphons it. Just breathes it in. The line goes dark. The cuffs click open because he melted the locks with his own heat. The steel door bends when he pushes it like it's warm taffy.
We back up. Guns, claws, everything. Scott is shouting his name. Derek is in front of me.
Stiles walks out, barefoot, kind smile, eyes gold-black and huge.
"Don't cry, Dad," he tells me, reaching out but not touching, polite even then. "I'm still me. You're scared. I don't want you scared in your own house. So I'll go."
Then he blinks. The sweet-creepy light leaves. He's just my son again, terrified, looking at the bent door and our faces.
"Oh no," he whispers. "Did I scare you? I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to play. I'll leave. I love you."
And he ran. Faster than we could follow. Gone into the preserve.
We searched for months. We called. We left voicemails. We are at fault. We saw our boy and we tried to imprison him because we were scared of his other face.
"Please," I beg these Mikaelsons. "Don't cage him. Even if he scares you. Especially then. Just... sit with him after. He comes back. He always comes back if someone's kind."
Long silence in New Orleans.
Then the girl, Hope, crying softly. "We saw him come back today. He held my hand while his fingers were broken."
"He did that?" Scott whispers. "Yeah. That's Stiles."
FREYA
I'm crying and I don't care who sees.
Sheriff Stilinski just described exactly what we saw today — the tilt, the giggle, the polite fairness game — except their version ended with an empty cell and months of searching.
Ours ended with Stiles asleep in lavender sheets.
"We won't cage him," I say firmly. "I warded his room to alert me if he has a nightmare, not to lock him. I swear."
"Thank you," three voices say at once from California.
Klaus speaks, low and dangerous but not at them — at the idea. "You are fools. You had a loyal, loving, immortal child who never raised a hand to you even in his rage, and you put him in a box. I have spent a thousand years wishing for loyalty like that."
"We know," Derek says flatly. "We live with it."
Elijah leans forward. "What triggers the shift? Truly?"
Scott answers. "Really angry. Like, someone hurting someone he loves angry. Or... when he stops trying to be calm. When he decides 'okay, let's play.' He doesn't plan evil. He just... becomes kind in a creepy way. Like an eighteen-year-old kid who thinks fairness means an eye for an eye and giggles while he does it. Then it passes and he's horrified."
Hayley looks at me. That's exactly it. No evil plot. Just twisted kindness.
"How do you bring him back?" Hayley asks. "Fast?"
Sheriff laughs wetly. "Be kind. Say his name soft. Offer food. He loves tacos. He loves being needed. Don't yell. Don't cage. Just... 'Hey, Stiles, you okay? Come back, we're here.' He comes back."
Hope stands. "I need to sit with him."
"Go," I say. "Take him water for when he wakes."
She's already moving.
HOPE
The blue guest room is dim. Lamp low. Stiles is curled on his side under the blanket, hoodie still on, shoes off where Mom left them.
He looks twelve when he sleeps. Not eighteen. Not immortal. Just a kid who apologizes in his sleep.
I sit on the edge of the bed. He flinches in his dream.
"...don't lock... please... I'll count... one two... Dad?"
I put my hand on his arm, light. Like Freya taught me. Grounding.
"Hey, Stiles," I whisper. "You're okay. You're in New Orleans. Blue room. No locks. You saved me today, remember? My arm's better. See?"
I gently touch his hand with my healed arm. He sighs in his sleep and uncurls a little. His fingers find my sleeve and hold on.
"...Hope? ...you okay? ...sorry I scared you..."
"I'm okay," I whisper, tears slipping. "You came back. You always come back."
Mom appears in the doorway, listening to the phone still on speaker down the hall. Scott is giving Freya a list of Stiles's tells — bouncing knee means anxious, rambling means scared, quiet means he's about to slip.
Mom mouths to me: pack at fault, huh?
I nod, mouthing back: we won't be.
Stiles mumbles again, soft and kind even dreaming. "...love you, Dad... love you, Scott... sorry... tacos tomorrow?"
I laugh quietly and brush hair off his forehead.
"Yeah, Stiles," I whisper. "Tacos tomorrow."
STILES
Warm. Lavender. Hand on my arm. Soft voice.
Not a cell. No mountain ash itch. No cuffs. No locked door.
Hope? Is that you? You're okay? Your arm fixed? Good. Good good good.
Sorry I played sorry without asking. He hurt you. I had to teach manners. I didn't want you to see. Please don't be scared. Please stay.
Dad? Scott? Derek? Are you still mad? I'm being good. I'm counting. I'm in a blue room. They let me stay. They didn't lock. They brought water.
I'm trying. I'm really trying to stay calm and kind and funny. Don't be scared in your own house. I'll leave if you want. Just... not tonight? I'm so tired.
...tacos tomorrow? Promise?
