Chapter 2 - ch 2

Got it — daylight return, vampire hurts Hope, they finally see the other side. Here:

STILES

The motel shower has two settings: lava and betrayal. I pick betrayal because I'm brave.

I'm up early because I couldn't sleep. Too nervous. Today I get to go back in daylight like Elijah said. No breaking in. No window climbing. Normal person behavior. I'm trying so hard to be normal.

I stop at this little place on Decatur and buy beignets for everyone. And coffee. Six coffees because I don't know what anybody drinks so I just guess.

Klaus: black, obviously. Scary dad energy. Elijah: fancy tea? I get him tea just in case. Freya: latte with extra shot because she does all the work. Hayley: iced coffee because she's cool. Hope: caramel something sweet because she's eighteen and nice and laughed at my jokes. Me: largest iced thing with sugar. I'm basically a raccoon with anxiety.

My hands are shaking the whole walk to the compound. Not hungry-shaking. Nervous-shaking. I really want them to like me.

Last night was good. I was calm. I was funny. I took one little sip from Hope when she dared me and I stopped right away and I didn't scare anybody. Hayley called me a good kid. I keep replaying that in my head like a song.

Please let today be good too. Please don't lose your temper. Breathe. Count. Be kind. Bring fried dough.

I get to the big iron gates and knock three times, polite.

"Hello! It's me! Stiles! I brought breakfast and I come in peace!"

HOPE

I hear his voice from the balcony and I'm down the stairs before Mom can even say my name.

He's standing at the gates in daylight looking completely different and exactly the same. Same hoodie, clean sleeve today. Hair still messy. Holding two pink boxes and a drink carrier stacked so high he can barely see over it.

"Hope!" he says, brightening so much it makes my chest hurt. "Hi! Good morning! You healed? Your neck? Are you dizzy? Did you drink water? I worried all night."

"I'm fine," I laugh. "You barely took anything. Look."

I tilt my head. The two little dots from last night are already gone. Tribrid healing.

He lets out a huge breath. "Oh thank god. Okay. Good. I brought you caramel coffee. If that's wrong I will drink it myself as punishment."

Mom comes out, arms crossed but smiling. "You bought for everyone?"

"Yes, ma'am," Stiles says quickly. "Black for Klaus, tea and coffee for Elijah because I didn't know, latte for Freya, iced for you, caramel for Hope. If I got it wrong I'll go back. I'll go back three times. I'm new and desperate to be liked."

Freya comes down, takes her latte, sniffs it. "How did you know?"

"Lucky guess," he grins. "Witch intuition. I have that. It's mostly anxiety but sometimes it's right."

Dad and Elijah step into the courtyard. Dad looks at the black coffee.

"You presume to know me, boy?"

"No, sir," Stiles says. "I presume you drink bean water that tastes like tire fire. If I'm wrong I'll—"

Dad takes a sip. Pauses.

"...Acceptable."

Stiles pumps his fist. "Yes! One point for the new kid!"

I take my box and sit on the fountain edge, patting the spot next to me. He sits, careful to leave space, knees bouncing.

"You sleep okay?" I ask.

"Bedbugs and I have an agreement now," he says. "They bite me, they die of confusion because my blood is weird, I feel bad and apologize to the corpses. It's a whole ecosystem."

Mom snorts into her iced coffee. Freya laughs. Even Elijah almost smiles.

This is nice. Normal. He's just... a funny eighteen-year-old who tries too hard and checks three times if I'm okay.

Then Freya freezes. Her cup slips. Elijah catches it without looking.

"Freya?" Mom says.

Freya's eyes go distant. "Ward tripped. Back alley. Someone fast. Someone who doesn't care that we—"

The air moves.

HAYLEY

It happens so fast even I barely see it.

A man in a leather jacket vaults the back wall — not through the gates, over them, ignoring the wards like they itch — lands in the courtyard, grabs Hope from the fountain before she can stand.

He yanks her up by the hair, twists her left arm behind her back until it snaps. Loud crack. Hope screams.

Blood. He drags his fangs down her neck, not feeding, just tearing to make her bleed. To make us watch.

"Don't move, Mikaelsons!" he shouts. He's young, turned maybe in his twenties, eyes wild and high on something. Vervain? Rage? "You killed my sire! You killed—"

"Klaus!" Elijah barks. "Release her and we will hear you."

"Shut up, suit!" The vampire jerks Hope tighter, claws digging into her throat. More blood runs down her shirt. "I want the hybrid! Come here, Klaus, or I rip her head off!"

Hope is gasping, arm bent wrong, neck bleeding. My baby. My eighteen-year-old baby.

I'm half-shifted before I think, claws out. Freya's hands are up, spell building. Klaus is vibrating with fury, calculating distance. Elijah is inching left.

And Stiles—

Stiles is standing perfectly still next to the spilled beignets, staring at Hope's blood.

His smile is gone. Not angry-gone. Just... quiet.

"Hey," he says softly.

The vampire glances at him. "Who the hell are you? Sit down, kid!"

Stiles tilts his head. Sweet. Curious. Like a kid watching a bug.

"That's my friend," he says. "You're hurting her. That's not nice."

STILES

Hope is crying. Quiet, trying not to, but I can hear it. Her arm is broken. Her neck is bleeding. The bad man is holding her like a shield.

I told myself I wouldn't do this here. I promised. Breathing. Counting. Be calm.

But he's hurting her. He twisted her arm until it popped. He tore her neck to be mean. She's eighteen like me. She laughed at my jokes. She trusted me with one sip and I was so gentle.

That's not fair. That's not nice. He needs to learn manners.

Okay. I'll teach him. It'll be quick. We'll play the sorry game.

I can feel my smile coming back but different. Light. Happy. My eyes feel warm gold then cold. My teeth feel sharp. Good. Play-teeth.

"Hey," I say again, stepping forward. My voice sounds giggly. I don't mean to giggle but this is kind of exciting. He wants to play rough. I know rough games. "Do you want to play sorry with me?"

The vampire sneers. "Back off!"

Elijah says my name sharp: "Stiles, don't—"

But I'm already walking. Slow. Hands in my hoodie pocket. Head tilted.

"You hurt Hope," I tell the man, kind. Like I'm explaining to a little kid. "See her arm? It's bendy the wrong way. That hurts. And her neck is bleeding. You did that on purpose. That's not how we treat friends."

"One more step and I kill her!" He digs deeper. Hope whimpers.

"Oh no," I say, eyes wide. "Don't do that. If you do that, then I have to be not-nice. And I'm trying so hard to be nice."

I giggle. I can't help it. He thinks he's fast. He's not fast like me.

"Ready?" I ask. "One. Two. Three. Go."

HOPE

I don't see Stiles move. No one does.

One second he's ten feet away counting like a kid on a playground. The next second the vampire's wrist holding my throat just... isn't there anymore.

There's blood spraying warm across my face — not mine — and the vampire is screaming and I'm falling and Stiles catches me.

He catches me so gently. Like I'm glass. He sets me down sitting against the fountain, checks my broken arm with soft fingers.

"Hi," he whispers to me, smiling sweet. Eyes gold and black and huge. Giggling a little. "Are you okay? Does it hurt bad? I'm sorry. I'll fix him. You sit here. Okay?"

"Stiles—" I choke on blood and fear.

"Shhh," he says, kind, brushing hair out of my bloody neck. Creepy-kind. Like a kid nurse playing doctor. "I got you. Close your eyes if you want. This part is yucky."

He stands and turns to the vampire, who is clutching his stump, staring in horror.

"You broke her arm," Stiles says, conversational. Happy. "Now yours is broken too. See? Fair."

He moves again — playful skip — and there's another crunch and the vampire's other arm bends backward exactly like mine.

"There!" Stiles claps, delighted. "Now we match! Twins!"

The vampire tries to run. Vampire-speed. Stiles is already in front of him, blocking the wall, pouting.

"No no no. We're playing. You don't leave in the middle. That's rude."

KLAUS

I have lived a thousand years. I have seen Mikael tear men apart. I have torn men apart myself.

I have never seen anything like this boy.

He is eighteen. He is giggling. He is being polite while he dismantles a vampire twice his age.

"You tore her neck," Stiles says to the intruder, almost sad. "That was mean. Do you want to know how it feels?"

He bites him. Not to feed to live — to teach. A quick, cruel, playful bite to the neck, then pulls back, spits blood on the stones.

"Blech. You taste mean. Hope tastes nice. Like sunshine and power. You taste like old socks."

The vampire sobs, "Please— please, I'm sorry—"

Stiles lights up. "You said sorry! Good! That's the game! Now I say... hmm."

He taps his chin, thinking hard like a child deciding rules.

"Now I say bye-bye."

He puts his hand through the vampire's chest. Not fast and angry like I do it. Slow. Curious. Watching. He pulls the heart out and looks at it, head tilted.

"Oh," he says softly. "It's still beating. That's neat."

Then he squeezes. The vampire turns grey and falls.

Silence in the courtyard except for Hope's ragged breathing and Hayley's whimper.

Stiles looks down at the heart in his hand, at the blood on his hoodie — clean sleeve ruined again — and blinks.

Once. Twice.

The light, giggly look drains out of his face like water.

HAYLEY

The change is instant and terrifying in reverse.

One second he's standing over a corpse holding a heart and saying "neat" like a kid with a frog.

The next second his eyes go wide and normal brown and fill with tears. He drops the heart like it burned him. He stumbles back, shaking all over.

"Oh no," he whispers. "Oh no no no. Hope? Hope!"

He scrambles to her on his knees, hands hovering over her broken arm and bloody neck, afraid to touch.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry you saw that. I'm sorry. Are you okay? Please tell me you're okay. I didn't want you to see. I promised myself last night, especially not Hope, and then he hurt you and I just... I stopped playing nice and I..."

He's crying now. Real sobs. Snot and tears. Eighteen and horrified at himself.

"Is she going to be okay? Freya? Please? Fix her arm? Take my blood if it helps? I have dumb immortal blood, take all of it, I don't care, just fix her!"

Freya is pale and shaking but she kneels beside them, hands glowing over Hope's arm. There's a soft pop as bone straightens. Hope cries out. Stiles grabs her good hand instantly.

"Squeeze my hand," he begs. "Squeeze as hard as you want. You can't hurt me. I promise. I'm unkillable, remember? Use me."

Hope squeezes so hard his fingers crack. He doesn't flinch. He just holds on, whispering, "Good, good, you're doing good, I'm here, I'm sorry, breathe with me, one two three—"

I sink down on Hope's other side, pulling her head into my lap, stroking her bloody hair. My hands won't stop shaking.

I just watched the kind taco boy rip a man apart while giggling about fairness and manners.

And now he's begging my daughter to forgive him for saving her.

FREYA

His magic is wild. While he was... playing... he was siphoning without meaning to. Pulling from my wards, from the courtyard stones, from the air. Not to get stronger. Just leaking. Like a child spilling juice.

Now he's shut tight again. Small. Sad. Human-shaped grief.

I finish sealing Hope's neck. The torn skin knits. She'll heal the rest herself. Tribrid. Strong girl.

"She'll be fine," I say quietly. "Arm's set. Neck's closed. She needs rest and blood. Real food too."

Stiles nods frantically. "I brought beignets. They're on the ground. Oh god, they're bloody. I'll buy new ones. I'll buy a hundred. Hope, do you want soup? I can get soup. What's your favorite soup?"

Hope laughs — wet, pained laugh — still holding his broken fingers. "Stiles. Stop."

"Sorry," he whispers. "Sorry. I'll stop talking. I'll leave. I should leave. You finally saw what I was talking about and now you're scared and I get it. I'll go back to the motel. Or leave town. I'll leave town if you want."

Elijah crouches in front of him. Formal. Gentle in a way I've rarely heard.

"Stiles. Look at me."

Stiles looks up, tear-streaked, ashamed.

"You saved Hope's life," Elijah says. "You moved when none of us could move without risking her throat. You were... terrifying. Yes. But you were controlled. You did not touch Hope with that hands except gently. You came back the second he was dead. That is not nothing."

"But I laughed," Stiles whispers. "I laughed while I did it. I'm eighteen, I'm supposed to be... I don't know. In college. Worrying about pimples. Not... that."

Klaus steps forward. He looks shaken too, though he'd never admit it. He looks at the ash-grey corpse, then at this crying boy.

"You warned us," Klaus says low. "Last night. You said when you get really angry, when you stop playing... you become something else. We did not understand."

"I don't understand it either," Stiles says. "I'm kind. I swear I'm kind. Even when I'm like that, I think I'm being kind. Like... creepy-kind. Like teaching manners. Like it's a game and if he's sorry it'll be okay. But it's not okay. I killed him. I liked... I didn't hate it while I was doing it. And then I came back and I hate it so much."

He buries his face in his hands.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm like this."

HOPE

My arm aches even healed. My neck stings. My shirt is stiff with blood — mine and his.

Stiles is kneeling in front of me covered in blood, crying, holding my hand like I'll disappear if he lets go.

I should be scared. I am scared. What I just saw was scarier than Dad ever is. Because Dad is angry when he kills. Stiles was... sweet. He called me his friend. He told me to close my eyes because it was yucky. He giggled.

But he also caught me gently. He set me down gently. He let me break his fingers without a sound. He's begging to buy me soup.

"Hey," I say softly.

He peeks through his fingers.

"Thank you," I say.

He stares. "What?"

"You saved me," I say. "He was going to rip my head off. Dad couldn't move. Freya couldn't spell without hitting me. Mom couldn't get close. You did. You stopped him."

"But you saw—"

"Yeah, I saw," I say. "I saw what you were talking about. The other side. The creepy-kind kid game thing."

He flinches at my description. Accurate. That's exactly what it was. Kind, but wrong. Like an eighteen-year-old trying to be nice with no idea how scary he is. Laughing while he fixes fairness.

"I'm still scared," I admit. Honest. He's always honest, I should be too. "That was scary, Stiles."

"I know," he whispers. "I'm scared of me too."

I squeeze his hand — his fingers already healed, crackling back into place. Unkillable. My age. Impossible.

"But I'm not scared you'll hurt me," I add. "You had every chance. You held me like glass. Twice now. Last night and today."

Mom's hand tightens on my shoulder. She nods slowly at Stiles.

"You protected my daughter," Mom says. Voice thick. "Thank you. And... we're going to help you. With the temper. With staying calm. Okay? You're not leaving town."

Freya nods, still pale. "We'll figure out triggers. Wards that warn you. Breathing spells. Wolf grounding. Something."

Stiles looks at all of us like he doesn't believe it.

"You... you still want me around? After that?"

I manage a smile, tired and bloody. "You still owe me new beignets. And soup. You promised soup."

He laughs — wet, real Stiles laugh, not the giggly game laugh. The normal funny one.

"Chicken noodle? Tomato? Clam chowder? I don't know New Orleans soup! Teach me soup!"

Mom laughs despite herself, crying a little too. Freya sits back on her heels, exhaling.

Dad watches Stiles for a long moment, then says quietly to Elijah — but we all hear:

"He is what I pretended to be at his age. And he hates it. Fascinating."

STILES

They're not kicking me out.

Hope is leaning on her mom, pale but smiling at me. Freya is cleaning blood off my face with a napkin like I'm five. Hayley is ordering me to sit and drink water. Elijah is disposing of... the body... while I look away because I can't look.

Klaus brought me the black coffee I bought him. It's cold now. He hands it to me.

"Drink, boy."

"Yes, sir," I whisper. "Thank you, sir. Sorry about your courtyard. Sorry about... the heart thing. I'll scrub the stones. I can scrub."

"Tomorrow," Klaus says. Not unkind. Almost... understanding.

I sit next to Hope on the fountain edge — careful, no blood on her side — and stare at my shaking hands. These hands held her gently. These hands also...

Don't think about it. Be here. Be calm. Be kind. Be funny.

"So," I say, voice wobbly, trying for a joke because jokes keep me here. "On a scale of one to ten, how bad was my second impression? First impression was tacos and neck snap. Second impression was... worse?"

Hope leans her head on my shoulder. Just for a second. Friendly. Tired. Trusting.

"Second impression was you saving my life," she murmurs. "Beignets were a close second."

Hayley meets my eyes over Hope's head. She mouths: thank you.

Freya squeezes my shoulder. "We'll work on it. Together. No one here is normal, Stiles. You're pack now. Scary, sweet pack."

Pack. Family. Friends who saw the worst face and didn't run.

I start crying again because I'm eighteen and overwhelmed and immortal and stupid and relieved.

"Sorry I'm crying on your fountain," I sniffle. "I'll clean that too."

Hope giggles, eyes closing. "Shut up and drink your bean water."

"Yes, ma'am," I say, and I do.

And for the first time since Beacon Hills, time doesn't feel shattered. Just... now. Bloody, sunny, courtyard now. With people who finally saw it — really saw it — and stayed.
