Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: Frostgate Hold – The First Northern Foothold (Part II)

The eastern quarter of Frostgate Hold was quieter than the central streets narrow alleys of dark stone winding between low buildings of timber and granite, fewer lanterns, fewer eyes. Lin Xuan led the way to the "Frostfang Rest" inn, a squat structure carved into the hillside like a scar. No sign. Only a rank-five array at the door that scanned for hostility.

They entered.

The common room was dim blue ice-crystal lanterns casting cold light, a low fire in the hearth, a handful of patrons nursing spirit wine in silence. The innkeeper a broad woman with frost-burn scars across her face glanced up from behind the counter.

"Room?"

Lin Xuan placed twenty mid-grades on the wood.

"Private. Upper floor. Silencing array active."

The woman pocketed the stones without counting.

"Last room on the left. No trouble. No refunds."

They ascended the narrow stairs.

The room was small single window overlooking the alley, thick walls, basic silencing array already humming in the corners. A low table. Two cushions. A narrow bed against the far wall.

Door sealed.

Hong Lian spoke first.

"We're not invisible here. The bounty reached this far. They'll recognize your description soon."

Lin Xuan sat cross-legged on the floor back against the wall.

"Then we move fast."

He withdrew the Void Cicada Egg from his aperture.

The small, cracked egg hovered between them golden veins pulsing faintly against the black shell. Alive. Waiting.

Hong Lian looked at it.

"You plan to hatch it?"

Lin Xuan's voice was low.

"I plan to force the process. The egg is rank-eight peak. Hatching naturally would take years. I will use it to push toward rank six peak."

Hong Lian's eyes narrowed.

"Forcing a rank-eight gu birth risks backlash. Aperture rupture. Qi deviation. Even death."

Lin Xuan met her gaze.

"Risk is the price of speed."

He placed the egg on the floor between them.

He began circulating qi slow, precise feeding thin threads into the shell.

The egg trembled.

Golden veins brightened.

Hong Lian watched silent, still.

She spoke after a long moment.

"You didn't hesitate to use the remnant on the summit. You didn't hesitate to kill Huo Tian. You didn't hesitate to take the egg tonight."

Lin Xuan did not look up.

"Hesitation is death."

Hong Lian leaned forward slightly.

"And what about me?"

Lin Xuan's hands paused just for a heartbeat.

He looked at her.

"You are still useful."

Hong Lian's smile was small, sharp.

"For now."

She leaned back.

"Then let me be useful."

She extended her right hand palm up.

Crimson lotus essence flowed from her aperture pure, rank-six middle stage, warm against his cold time-path qi.

"Use my essence to stabilize the hatching. Lotus-path complements void and time. It will reduce backlash."

Lin Xuan studied her palm.

Then he placed his own hand over hers.

Their qi merged cold gold and warm crimson intertwining.

The egg pulsed brighter.

The veins spread cracks widening.

A faint chirp echoed in the room not sound, but vibration in their sea of consciousness.

The hatching began.

Power surged rank-six middle stage climbing toward peak.

Lin Xuan endured the influx meridians burning, aperture walls straining.

Hong Lian endured with him her qi steadying his.

The egg shattered.

A small, perfect cicada emerged wings black-edged gold, body radiating void-temporal ripples.

Rank-eight initial.

Void Cicada Gu.

It crawled onto Lin Xuan's palm.

It accepted his blood.

Power flooded him again rank six middle → rank six peak.

The breakthrough came with no sound no scream, no tremor.

Only silence.

Only cold certainty.

When the light faded, Lin Xuan opened his eyes.

Rank six peak.

One step closer.

Hong Lian withdrew her hand.

Her voice was quiet.

"You crossed peak."

Lin Xuan nodded once.

"Yes."

She looked at the cicada gu on his palm.

"You have a second rebirth now. One year rewind. Full cycle."

Lin Xuan stored the gu carefully wrapping it in layers of his own qi.

"I will not use it lightly."

Hong Lian rose.

She walked to the window looked out at the city lights.

"We have five days before the second wave arrives. We refine. We prepare. We vanish."

Lin Xuan rose.

He stood beside her looking at the same view.

"We vanish."

They turned from the window.

The city glowed below lanterns red against black stone.

Ahead lay the true northern heartlands endless cities, endless sects, endless opportunities.

And endless enemies.

Lin Xuan walked toward the door.

Hong Lian fell into step beside him.

No illusions.

No mercy.

No promises beyond the next breath.

Only eternity.

Cold.

Unrelenting.

Inevitable.
