Chapter 85 - Chapter 85: Frostgate Hold – The First Northern Foothold (Part III)

The room at Frostfang Rest was small and cold single window overlooking the alley, thick walls, basic silencing array humming in the corners. A low table. Two cushions. A narrow bed against the far wall.

Door sealed.

Lin Xuan sat cross-legged on the floor back against the wall Void Cicada Gu resting on his open palm. The small black-edged golden cicada was still wings folded, body radiating faint void-temporal ripples. Rank-eight initial. A second life coiled in darkness. One full year rewind. Full cycle. Sacrifices: current cultivation base, all gu below rank-eight, ten years dormancy before reuse.

He had not used it.

He would not use it lightly.

Hong Lian sat on the cushion opposite knees drawn up, crimson robes pooling around her like spilled wine. She watched him silent, still eyes reflecting the faint blue light of the ice-crystal lantern hanging from the beam.

The hatching had taken four hours.

Rank six peak.

One step closer.

Hong Lian spoke first voice low, breaking the quiet.

"You have a second chance now. One year. Full rebirth. No partial rewind. No compromise."

Lin Xuan looked at the gu.

Then at her.

"I have a second chance."

She leaned forward slightly.

"You could have used it on the summit. Rewound the choice. Rewound the array's demand. Rewound… me."

Lin Xuan's black eyes met her blood-red ones.

"I could have."

A pause.

Hong Lian's voice dropped lower.

"But you didn't."

Lin Xuan's answer came without hesitation.

"I already chose."

Hong Lian exhaled breath fogging faintly in the cold room.

"You chose eternity."

"Yes."

She leaned back.

"Then why am I still here?"

Lin Xuan looked at her long, steady.

"Because right now… the variable is still positive."

Hong Lian's smile was small, sharp, almost resigned.

"Always the numbers."

She rose.

She walked to the window looked out at the city lights flickering red against black stone.

"We have five days before the second wave arrives. We refine. We prepare. We vanish."

Lin Xuan rose.

He stood beside her looking at the same view.

"We vanish."

They turned from the window.

The city glowed below lanterns red against black stone.

Ahead lay the true northern heartlands endless cities, endless sects, endless opportunities.

And endless enemies.

Lin Xuan walked toward the door.

Hong Lian fell into step beside him.

No illusions.

No mercy.

No promises beyond the next breath.

Only eternity.

Cold.

Unrelenting.

Inevitable.
