Chapter 74 - Tournament 2

I'm sitting in the arena stands with Eldrin, Seraphina, and Lucien, waiting for today's tournament to start.

Yesterday was incredible. Watching Takeshi fight his way through the student tournament, seeing how much he's grown since we first met. All that training with the high elves, the dungeon runs, the academy classes. It all showed in his performance.

And Mira! That transformation she did was straight out of a tournament manga. The shadow cocoon dispersing to reveal her in that black coat with the obsidian blade. A classic powerup moment.

Yuki and I argued about it afterward.

[Yuki] "That was totally a magical girl transformation!"

[Wright] "No way. Magical girl transformations have specific aesthetics. That outfit wasn't anywhere close."

[Yuki] "But she's a girl! And she uses magic! That's literally a magical girl!"

[Wright] "She didn't use magic after the transformation though. She used a sword. That's completely different."

[Yuki] "The transformation itself was magic!"

[Wright] "The transformation enabling a different fighting style doesn't make it a magical girl transformation. It's a combat form change."

We agreed to disagree.

Still, it was awesome to watch.

Movement beside me pulls me from my thoughts. Vesper settles into the seat next to mine, looking slightly tired but satisfied.

[Wright] "Where'd you go? I haven't seen you all morning."

[Vesper] "The tournament organizers asked me to help with the barrier setup. I agreed because I wanted to examine how it works up close."

[Wright] "How was it?"

[Vesper] "Fascinating. The core structure uses a layered absorption matrix that redirects kinetic energy into a dispersal field. Each layer is attuned to different threat levels, with automatic scaling based on incoming force. The student tournament only needed three layers, but for today we implemented seven."

She's excited, talking faster than usual.

[Vesper] "The synchronization between layers is particularly elegant. When one layer reaches capacity, it smoothly transfers overflow to the next tier while maintaining continuous coverage. And the fail-safes are redundant to an almost excessive degree."

[Wright] "Seven layers? That much stronger than yesterday?"

[Vesper] "The fighters today aren't students. They're experienced combatants. Some are adventurers, others are academy graduates, a few are even former military. The barrier needs to handle significantly more powerful attacks."

An idea hits me.

[Wright] "Could you make it strong enough for me to compete?"

Vesper turns to look at me. Her eyes widen slightly.

[Vesper] "You're serious."

[Wright] "Yeah."

[Vesper] "Wright, I've heard everyone talk about how powerful you are. How terrifying. The Saintess yesterday said you felt like a natural disaster choosing to be polite."

[Wright] "So?"

[Vesper] "So even with seven layers, I don't think the barrier would hold. And if I tried to add more layers, the synchronization would destabilize. The entire structure would collapse. That's ignoring the mana cost of maintaining something that strong, which would drain the enchantment reserves in minutes."

She shakes her head.

[Vesper] "It's impossible. Give up on the tournament idea."

My shoulders slump.

[Wright] "Yeah. I figured."

[Vesper] "Besides, you'd make it boring for everyone else."

I sigh and settle back in my seat. No tournament for me. Again.

---

The arena floor is prepared. The barrier shimmers into existence, the seven layers creating a faint prismatic effect in the air.

An announcer steps into the center, his voice magically amplified to reach every seat in the coliseum.

[Announcer] "Welcome, citizens of Thornhaven, to the main tournament! Today, eight of our finest fighters will compete for glory and the title of champion!"

The crowd roars.

[Announcer] "The rules are simple! Victory is achieved by forcing your opponent to surrender, knocking them unconscious, or triggering the safety barrier with a would-be fatal blow! Stepping outside the arena boundaries also results in a loss! For those with flight capabilities, you must engage your opponent at least once every five minutes while airborne!"

He pauses for dramatic effect.

[Announcer] "Let the first round begin!"

---

[Announcer] "First match! Aurelia versus Marcus!"

Aurelia walks onto the arena floor in her white combat garb. Marcus enters opposite her, a towering bear beastfolk knight in full plate armor with sword and shield.

[Announcer] "Begin!"

Marcus charges immediately, shield raised. Golden light erupts around Aurelia's body. Marcus swings his sword. She blocks with her forearm and his blade slides off harmlessly. Her palm strike catches him in the chest. Marcus flies backward, hits the ground hard, and the barrier flashes.

[Announcer] "Winner! Aurelia!"

The crowd cheers. That was over fast.

---

[Announcer] "Second match! Krath versus Elena!"

Krath enters, the massive minotaur carrying his double-bladed axe. Elena is an elf fire mage.

[Announcer] "Begin!"

Elena launches fireballs immediately. They hit Krath's chest and disperse harmlessly. She creates a wall of fire. Krath walks through it like it's not there. Elena tries ice, freezing the ground. He breaks through in a single step. Krath closes the distance and swings his axe. Elena's barrier shatters, and the safety barrier flashes before the blade reaches her throat.

[Announcer] "Winner! Krath!"

Another dominant performance.

---

[Announcer] "Third match! Silvara versus Reef!"

I lean forward. Both are skilled fighters that the queen mentioned.

Silvara is a demon with dark purple skin and silver hair. Her robes seem to shift and move on their own. Reef is a merfolk on transformed legs, his skin with a faint blue-green tint, hair flowing despite there being no wind.

[Announcer] "Begin!"

Reef doesn't wait. He creates water from nothing, forming it around his fists like gauntlets. He charges forward, closing the distance fast.

Silvara vanishes into shadow. Reef spins, tracking her movement. His water-enhanced fist slams into the ground where her shadow was, but she's already gone.

She rises from his own shadow behind him.

Reef anticipates it. He twists and strikes backward, water trailing from his fist. His punch passes through empty air as Silvara dissolves back into darkness.

She appears above him, standing on his shadow somehow, defying physics. Reef creates a sphere of water and launches it upward. The water explodes around her. Silvara transforms into shadow before it hits, reforming several meters away on the arena floor.

They circle each other now, both cautious.

Reef makes the next move. He creates multiple water spheres and launches them from different angles simultaneously. Silvara's shadow stretches and splits, each tendril intercepting a sphere. The water splashes harmlessly against the darkness.

But it's a feint. Reef is already moving through the spray, water coating his entire body like armor. He closes the distance in seconds. His fist connects with Silvara's guard. The impact of water against shadow creates a shockwave.

Silvara slides backward but maintains her footing. Her shadow erupts from the ground around Reef, wrapping around his legs like chains. Reef channels water downward, the pressure breaking through the shadow binding.

Silvara gestures and the shadows reform, but Reef is already adapting. He creates a thin layer of water across the entire arena floor. Silvara pauses. Every shadow she controls would have to pass through that water now, disrupting her magic.

She smiles.

Instead of using ground shadows, she dissolves into darkness and appears in the air, using the shadow cast by the barrier itself.

Reef looks up. He can't reach her there with his close-range style. Silvara drops from above, shadow coalescing around her hands like claws. Reef meets her descent with a water-enhanced uppercut.

They collide mid-air. Water and shadow explode outward. Both hit the ground and roll to their feet. Reef's water armor is cracked. Silvara's shadow form is flickering.

They charge simultaneously.

Reef's fist glows with concentrated water magic. Silvara's entire body becomes shadow, moving like liquid darkness. They clash in the center of the arena. Water against shadow. Physical enhancement against intangibility.

The battle becomes a blur of motion. Reef lands solid hits when Silvara is solid. Silvara phases through attacks when she's shadow. Neither can maintain a decisive advantage.

Then, instead of dodging, Silvara lets Reef's next punch connect. His water-enhanced fist passes through her chest as she turns to shadow. But she doesn't retreat. She reforms with his arm still inside her shadowy form, trapping it.

Reef's eyes widen.

Silvara's other hand, solid and sharp with shadow magic, goes for his throat. Reef reacts on instinct. He channels all his water magic into a point-blank explosion. The water detonates. Silvara is blown backward, her shadow form disrupted.

Reef's arm is free, but he's off-balance from the explosion. Silvara recovers first. She rises from her own shadow, now behind Reef, and her shadow-clad hand presses against his back.

[Silvara] "Yield."

Reef freezes. He can feel the magic at his spine, sharp enough to trigger the barrier. There's a moment of silence.

[Reef] "...I yield."

[Announcer] "Winner! Silvara!"

The crowd erupts in cheers.

Silvara releases her magic and offers a hand. Reef takes it.

[Reef] "That trap was brilliant."

[Silvara] "Your water explosion almost had me. I barely recovered in time."

They walk off the arena floor with mutual respect.

That was incredible. The way they kept adapting to each other, finding counters and new approaches.

---

[Announcer] "Fourth match! Garrin versus Zephyra!"

Garrin enters. The dwarf is built like a boulder, twin hammers glowing with runic engravings. Zephyra follows, a harpy with large brown and white wings already spread, taloned feet clicking on the stone.

[Announcer] "Begin!"

Zephyra takes to the air immediately, wings beating powerfully. She circles above, wind gathering around her talons. Garrin doesn't chase. He slams both hammers into the ground.

Stone pillars erupt from the arena floor, shooting upward like spears. They create a forest of obstacles in the air. Zephyra weaves between them, her aerial maneuverability letting her navigate the maze. She dives, wind-enhanced talons leading. Garrin raises his hammers. Her strike and his block collide with tremendous force.

The impact sends Garrin sliding backward, but he's not hurt. His earth magic had already reinforced his stance.

Zephyra pulls up and launches wind blades from her wings. Garrin creates a stone wall. The wind blades cut into it but don't break through. She circles again, faster this time. Multiple wind blades from multiple angles.

Garrin rotates, his hammers glowing brighter. Each swing creates a stone barrier that intercepts the attacks. But he's on the defensive. Zephyra controls the pace from the air.

Garrin slams his hammers together. The stone pillars he created earlier all collapse simultaneously, becoming a cloud of debris. Zephyra tries to dodge, but there's too much. Rocks pelt her from all directions. She's forced to descend, using her wings to shield herself.

The moment her feet touch the ground, Garrin moves. The stone beneath her feet becomes liquid. She sinks ankle-deep.

Garrin closes the distance, hammers already swinging. Zephyra beats her wings powerfully, creating a massive gust of wind that pushes him back while pulling herself free from the softened stone. She's airborne again, but now Garrin has shown he can ground her.

Zephyra stays higher, out of reach of his earth magic's direct manipulation. She uses hit-and-run tactics, diving in for wind-enhanced strikes and pulling away before he can counter. Garrin focuses on defense, creating barriers and platforms, trying to limit her attack angles.

The battle becomes a test of endurance. Can Zephyra break through his defenses before she tires? Can Garrin ground her again for a finishing blow?

Zephyra dives from directly above, wind magic screaming around her. It's her strongest attack yet. Garrin plants his feet and raises both hammers overhead. Earth magic surges through them, creating a dome of stone above him.

Zephyra's talons hit the dome with explosive force. Cracks spread across the stone. But it holds. For just a moment, Zephyra is locked in place, her talons embedded in the stone dome, her momentum arrested.

Garrin doesn't hesitate. He drops the dome and swings both hammers in an upward arc. Twin pillars of stone erupt from the ground, catching Zephyra from both sides like a vice. She's pinned between them, wings trapped.

Garrin's hammers glow with enough power to pulverize the stone and her with it.

[Garrin] "Yield."

Zephyra struggles for a moment, then stops.

[Zephyra] "I yield."

[Announcer] "Winner! Garrin!"

The stone releases her gently. Garrin offers a hand to help her down.

[Garrin] "Your aerial control is exceptional. If this arena had been larger, the outcome might have been different."

[Zephyra] "And if it had been outdoors with real wind currents, I would have won. But you used the environment perfectly."

They walk off together.

I sit back in my seat. The first round is done. The semifinals are going to be incredible. Aurelia versus Krath. Silvara versus Garrin.

I can't wait.
