[Takeshi's Perspective]
I'm sitting in the waiting area, trying to keep my nerves under control.
The room is filled with other contestants. Some are stretching, others meditating, a few pacing back and forth. I'm just sitting here, focusing on my breathing like I used to before track meets.
My Wyrm Scale Gauntlets rest on my hands, the dark scales catching the light. The Nature's Blessing charm hangs from my belt. Each piece of equipment was earned during my time training in the dungeons. They are proof that I am no longer the person who once stood helpless in front of a king.
I've leveled up with the Goddess blessing like in video games. The hunting expeditions with the high elves taught me a lot about fighting monsters. And the classes I've been taking at both academies, especially yesterday's combat training session here, have helped me refine my techniques.
I even got a chance to talk with Aurelia at the banquet. The Saintess everyone's been talking about. When she found out I fight using my fists and magic, her eyes lit up. She told me to trust my instincts, to not overthink combinations, and to remember that the best opening is the one your opponent doesn't expect. Simple advice, but it stuck with me.
I'm ready for this.
A tournament official steps into the center of the room. Tall man, human, wearing formal attire with the academy's emblem on his chest.
[Official] "Attention, contestants! I will now review the rules one final time before the tournament begins."
Everyone quiets down.
[Official] "The arena is enchanted with a barrier specifically designed to prevent fatal attacks. If you receive what would be a fatal blow, the barrier will activate and you will be declared the loser. You also lose if you step outside the arena boundaries. For those with aerial capabilities, you must engage your opponent with an attack at least once every five minutes while airborne. You cannot stall in the air indefinitely. Are there any questions?"
No one speaks up.
[Official] "Good. The bracket has been determined through random drawing. We have fifteen contestants total. One contestant has drawn a first-round bye. The remaining fourteen will compete in seven opening matches. After each round concludes, contestants will be randomly paired for the next round. First match begins in ten minutes. Prepare yourselves."
He leaves, and the room fills with murmured conversations again.
I'm fighting third. That gives me time to watch two matches first.
---
The coliseum is packed.
The same place where we landed when we first arrived in Thornhaven, riding on Ignatia in her massive dragon form. Yuki is so lucky to have a dragon as a familiar. That's so cool. The crowd went wild seeing her.
Now they're here for the tournament. Spectators fill the tiered seating that curves around the arena floor. The noise is incredible, a constant roar of excitement and anticipation.
The arena itself is a large circular platform, maybe fifty meters in diameter, made of packed earth and stone. The barrier shimmers faintly in the air above it, a translucent dome of magical energy.
The first match begins.
A human boy with a staff uses earth magic against a dwarf girl with twin axes. She closes the distance fast and breaks through his defenses in under three minutes. The barrier flashes when her axe would have taken his head off.
The second match pits a beast folk wielding lightning against a demon girl who commands shadow. They clash at blinding speed, arcs of electricity tearing through veils of darkness before the demon girl delivers the finishing blow in a single, decisive strike.
Then it's my turn.
[Official] "Third match! Takeshi versus Kael!"
I walk into the arena, and the noise from the crowd washes over me. I can see Wright and the others in the stands. Yuki is waving enthusiastically. Aiko gives me a thumbs up.
My opponent is an elf with a bow and wind magic swirling around his hands.
[Official] "Begin!"
Kael jumps back and fires wind arrows. I charge forward, channeling fire into my gauntlets. The heat builds, flames wrapping around my fists. I deflect one arrow with my gauntlet and close the gap. Kael tries to create distance, but I'm faster. I slam my burning fist into his guard, and the impact sends him flying.
He hits the ground hard, and I'm already on him. Another fire-enhanced punch, and the barrier flashes. Match over. Just like the hunts with the high elves.
[Official] "Winner! Takeshi!"
I head back to the waiting area, adrenaline still pumping.
---
The remaining first-round matches play out. A girl with ice and water magic defeats a boy with earth manipulation. A falcon beast folk with pure physical enhancement overpowers a human spear user. A demon defensive specialist outlasts an aggressive fire mage. The final match has a rabbit beastfolk enhancement fighter barely edge out an owl beastfolk illusionist.
The quarterfinals begin. Eight of us now, including the one who had the first-round bye.
My next opponent is a girl named Sera, a merfolk who uses ice and water magic with impressive control.
[Official] "Begin!"
Sera immediately creates a wall of ice between us. I punch through it with fire, but she's already moved, using water to slide across the arena floor. She launches ice spears from multiple angles. I dodge and block, but one catches my shoulder. The Nature's Blessing charm helps, but I need to change tactics.
I switch to earth magic, raising stone barriers to block her ice. Then I use wind to increase my speed, closing the distance before she can reposition. She tries to freeze the ground beneath my feet, but I counter with fire, melting the ice instantly.
I combine wind and fire, creating a spiral of flames that she can't escape. She raises an ice shield, but the heat is too intense. The shield melts, and my fist connects with her chest. The barrier flashes.
[Official] "Winner! Takeshi!"
Two down. The switch between two elements is fluid now. Those magic classes really paid off at Arcanis.
---
I take a lunch break after the match, eating the sandwich that Aiko gave me earlier while watching the other quarterfinal matches. An older rabbit beastfolk named Rhen with a sword and enhancement magic absolutely dominates his opponent. A demon girl named Mira, wielding shadow magic, wins her match with overwhelming speed and precision. And a falcon beast folk advances with raw power.
The semifinals. Four of us left.
My opponent is Mira.
This is it. Time to show everything I've learned.
[Official] "Begin!"
Mira doesn't move immediately. Instead, shadows begin to pool around her feet, spreading outward like ink in water. She raises one hand, and tendrils of darkness surge toward me.
I channel fire, burning through the shadows, but more keep coming. I switch to lightning, trying to disrupt the magic directly. The electricity tears through some of the tendrils, but she just creates more. She's controlling the entire arena's shadows. Every dark corner, every shadow cast by the barriers above, all of it becomes a weapon.
I use wind to increase my speed, dodging the tendrils while closing the distance. Fire erupts from my gauntlets as I swing at her. She dissolves into shadow, reforming several meters away.
I remember Aurelia's advice. The best opening is the one they don't expect.
I switch tactics. Instead of fighting the shadows, I create light. Fire magic, but not for offense. I create floating orbs of flame around the arena, illuminating everything, reducing the shadows she can control. Mira's eyes widen slightly. She didn't expect that.
But then she smiles.
[Mira] "Clever. But I don't need the shadows for this."
Darkness erupts around her, enveloping her completely in a swirling cocoon of shadow. The shadows pulse and writhe, growing denser, more solid. Then they disperse like smoke.
Mira stands revealed in a long black coat with a high collar trimmed in muted gold and violet. An obsidian blade rests in her hand, slender and refined. The whole look has a dark, almost vampiric elegance to it.
[Takeshi] "That's so Chūnibyō."
[Mira] "What?"
[Takeshi] "Uh, it's a term from my home country. Don't worry about it."
[Mira] "It sounds cool though. I like it."
She charges, and suddenly this is a completely different fight.
Her blade moves through the air with precision, each strike enhanced by shadow magic that extends its reach. I block with my gauntlets, but the shadows slip around my guard, forcing me to dodge. I counter with fire, flames wrapping around my fists. We clash, gauntlets against obsidian blade, fire against shadow.
She's good. Really good with that sword.
I use earth magic to create barriers, buying myself space to think. She cuts through them, shadows trailing from her blade like smoke. I combine wind and fire, creating a spiral of flames. She walks through it, her coat billowing, shadows protecting her from the heat. I switch to ice, freezing the ground beneath her feet. She leaps gracefully, her movements fluid and controlled.
I need to break her rhythm. I channel water magic, creating a thin layer across the arena floor. Then I add lightning, electricity crackling across the surface. Mira lands and the shock runs through her. It's not enough to trigger the barrier, but it breaks her concentration for a split second.
That's all I need.
I launch myself forward with wind magic, fire and earth combining in my gauntlets. I slam into her guard with everything I have. Her blade meets my gauntlets, and for a moment we're locked there, pushing against each other.
Then I channel ice down through the water still on the ground, freezing her footing solid. She can't dodge. I twist, breaking the blade lock, and drive my other fist toward her chest. The obsidian blade dissolves into shadow, and she tries to transform again, to escape.
But I'm too close. My fire-enhanced punch connects with her shoulder before the shadows fully form. The barrier flashes.
[Official] "Winner! Takeshi!"
I did it. Barely. My arms are shaking from the exertion.
Mira reforms from the shadows, the coat and blade disappearing. She's breathing hard but smiling.
[Mira] "That was incredible! You adapted so fast!"
[Takeshi] "That transformation was amazing. I've never fought anyone who could do that."
[Mira] "Chūnibyō, right? I'm going to remember that."
We shake hands, and I head back to the waiting area, breathing hard but victorious.
I'm in the finals.
---
The other semifinal match is about to begin. Rhen versus the falcon beast folk.
It's over in less than three minutes. Rhen is on another level entirely. His enhancement magic makes him impossibly fast, and his sword technique is flawless.
Then it's time for the finals.
Me versus Rhen.
[Official] "Final match! Takeshi versus Rhen!"
The crowd roars as we enter the arena.
Rhen looks calm, confident. He's older than me by a couple years, and every movement he makes is precise and controlled.
[Official] "Begin!"
Rhen moves fast, but I'm ready for it.
His sword comes at me in a blur. I block with my gauntlets, the impact sending vibrations up my arms, and counter immediately with a fire-enhanced strike. He dodges, but I follow up with earth magic, stone pillars erupting where he's moving. He cuts through one, vaults over another.
I channel lightning to increase my speed, matching his pace. We trade blows, gauntlets against sword, both of us moving at incredible speed. I create distance with a burst of wind, then launch stone projectiles enhanced with fire. He deflects some, dodges others, but one catches his shoulder. First hit.
He doesn't slow down. If anything, he gets faster. His sword glows brighter with enhancement magic, and he closes the gap in an instant. His blade cuts through my fire barrier like it's not even there.
I switch to ice, freezing the ground. He slips slightly, and I capitalize with a lightning-enhanced punch. He blocks with his sword, but the impact sends him sliding back.
We're both breathing hard now.
I combine water and wind, creating a mist that obscures the arena. He cuts through it, finding me anyway, his enhancement magic guiding him. Our weapons clash again and again. Fire and lightning from my gauntlets, pure enhancement magic from his blade. Every impact sends shockwaves across the arena.
I use earth to create a platform, launch myself upward with wind, and come down with a fire-earth combination. He meets me head-on, his sword intercepting my strike mid-air. The collision sends us both flying in opposite directions. We land, roll, and immediately charge again.
I throw everything at him. Fire and earth, launching molten projectiles. He dodges some, cuts through others, but a few get through. He retaliates with a series of strikes so fast I can barely track them. My gauntlets take most of the hits, but his blade finds openings, shallow cuts that the Nature's Blessing charm immediately starts healing. I combine wind and ice together, creating a freezing gale. He pushes through it, but it slows him just enough for me to land a solid hit with a fire-enhanced punch.
He slides back, breathing hard now, and grins.
[Rhen] "Not bad!"
Lightning and fire, increasing both my speed and power. We clash again, faster than before, neither of us giving ground. I'm running out of energy. The Nature's Blessing charm is working overtime. My arms ache from blocking his strikes. But I'm not done yet. One more combination. Everything I have left.
I use earth to create a stone platform beneath my feet, then launch myself upward with wind. Fire and lightning both erupt from my gauntlets, crackling with power. Ice forms along my arms, cooling the heat, letting me channel even more energy. I descend like a meteor, all five elements combined into a single strike.
Rhen's eyes widen. Then he grins wider. His sword blazes with enhancement magic, brighter than anything I've seen so far. He leaps to meet my attack.
We clash mid-air, gauntlets against sword.
For a moment, we're suspended there, both pouring everything we have into the strike. Fire, lightning, ice, wind, and earth versus pure enhancement magic. The arena shakes from the impact.
Then he shifts. Not with greater force, but with control. His stance lowers by a fraction, shoulders turning just enough to redirect the pressure of my swing. My power surges forward expecting resistance, but he yields instead of meeting it head-on.
The sudden absence of opposition pulls me off balance. His blade angles inward along the opening created by my own momentum, sliding past the edge of my guard before I can fully recover. The barrier flashes, flaring bright as it absorbs the strike.
I fall to the ground, and the official raises his hand toward Rhen.
[Official] "Winner! Rhen! Champion of the student tournament!"
I lie there for a moment, breathing hard, staring up at the sky. I gave it everything. Every technique I've learned. And it still wasn't enough.
Rhen walks over and extends a hand, that grin still on his face.
[Rhen] "That last attack was insane. You actually made me go all out."
I take his hand and let him pull me to my feet.
[Takeshi] "I still lost."
[Rhen] "This time. But you're what, sixteen? I'm nineteen and I've been training at this academy for three years. Give it time."
[Takeshi] "I'm seventeen! Next tournament though, I'm taking that title."
[Rhen] "I'll be waiting. Don't make it easy for me."
[Takeshi] "Wasn't planning on it."
We shake hands properly, and the crowd erupts in applause.
I walk off the arena floor, second place in the tournament. I can see Wright and the others in the stands. They're all on their feet, cheering. Yuki is jumping up and down. Aiko is crying happy tears.
I didn't win first place. But I made it to the finals. I pushed the champion to go all out. I showed everything I've learned, everything I've been working toward.
And next time, I'll be even stronger. I'll win. I'm sure of it.
